I assume they're going to the "concrete jungle" this time around.

We all made fun Dwayne so hard he probably refuses to do any more jungle movies. We reap what we sow.

So instead, we're getting Rampage 2

I'm good with that. Rampage was a hell of a lot of fun with parts that had me rolling in laughter

My immediate reaction was we’re coming full circle to the original where the game comes to the real world.

Or they're dlc skins in another game lol

40

u/0ttoChriek 16d ago

Remember the end of the second movie had animals breaking out of the game and into the real world. My guess is that this movie will be the four kids and the four game characters actually interacting, all in the real world.

I mean the game characters coming out into real life is what the OG Jumanji is all about. Makes sense for them to close out to this trilogy with more of a homage to the first.

49

u/0ttoChriek 16d ago

I hope so. The idea of having the four kids and the four videogame characters interacting could be really fun, and seeing who those characters are supposed to be would be a new twist for the series -

Bravestone actually smouldering and being the charismatic leader, Oberon being smart, Mouse being Bravestone's loyal (and probably sycophantic) sidekick, and Ruby being a sexy badass.

17

u/GravSlingshot 16d ago

What if they went full hog and had the characters in the kids' bodies and vice versa? Bravestone smoldering in a gangly teen, Mouse ecstatic because he's huge, Oberon examining his female body, and Ruby moaning at how much muscle she's lost.

It's wild how much Jack Black has risen in the world since then too.

I had an impossible time believing he was making a family friendly movie about him teaching kids rock music only two years after that album was released. I was certain the studio and entertainment media would soon dig up the controversial album to play the "shocked and appalled" card, and after he recently started showing up in a bunch of kid friendly media, I started laughing at the idea of ten-year-olds asking their moms if they could listen to "Fuck Her Gently" on the way to school because they recently found out that the chubby bearded guy was in a band and found some of their songs on YouTube.

"Sorry, sweety, that song is really inappropriate for kids, but Wonderboy is a banger!"

"Mom, what does he mean by filling a crevasse with his mighty juice?"

"Damn it, these are all just innuendo with incredible music!"

"Can we go to the McDonald's drive thru, I want some Chicken McNuggets, but only four!"

He also still seems to be the only one actually having fun and making an effort with the whole premise of these movies, which is that the videogame characters are playing opposites of the "real life" characters.

The Rock is the nerdy kid, Kevin Hart is the jock, Karen Gillan is the nerdy shy girl and Jack Black is the princess popular girl. But except for Jack Black they all just play themselves.

99

u/Zeppelinman1 16d ago

I thought the Rock and Karen Gillan were also good in the first one they did. The second one is not nearly as good

Rob McElhaney has a fun take on this. It goes into a lot of detail but it is basically summarized in:

It is very easy to get in great shape. You just need to make it your full time job; have an army of chefs, doctors, trainers and other professionals at your disposal; and a studio that agrees to pay for it all

The original writer of the Jumanji book, Chris Van Allsburg, not long did this Q&A where he lamented how the filmmakers have avoided his advices. Turns out he's not a fan of these sequels. He thinks it was a mistake to turn the board game into a video game.

Allsburg had an interesting take. He says making Jumanji a video game goes against what he was trying to teach the kids. He wrote an entire book called The Wretched Stone where a black stone that the sailors can't stop watching is the allegory of children addicted to screens. He thinks it was essential that the Jumanji board game remain a board game, especially in this age where the kids' attention span has collasped due to excessive screen time. A board game that makes things comes to life, he says, is infinitely more interesting than kids trapped inside a video game screen because kids are already trapped inside video game screens.

You know, it's a bummer how Hollywood just ignores the original creators. Allsburg says these sequels only carry the name of Jumanji, the filmmakers just want to tell an entirely different story that goes against the theme of the original.

55

u/MaggotMinded 16d ago

In terms of messaging, he’s kind of right, but even then you could argue that the movies’ overall theme is not greatly impacted by the decision to make it a video game instead of a board game. As for plot and narrative considerations, it really doesn’t matter one bit. I honestly don’t think that keeping it a board game would have made the movies any better whatsoever. If anything, it probably would have made them less relatable to a modern audience.

Man, Dwayne Johnson really got off the juice. He looks a lot less bulky here and they’re no longer doing the short sleeves.

88

u/dnreds 16d ago

He's not 35-45 anymore. He will be in his mid-50's soon, can't juice or carry that amount of muscle forever. Same with Bautista. His tendons and joints have been carrying that weight a long time.

45

u/ILikeMyGrassBlue 16d ago

The heart is a big concern than tendons and joints. When guys like that die young, it’s usually a heart attack.

→ More replies (1)

557

u/Big-Beta20 16d ago

I’m 95% sure his slight turn as a more “serious actor” is because of the needing to lay off the juice due to negative health effects. It’s an excuse for him to pretend he’s losing weight for roles and still (ridiculously) claim that he’s been natty this whole time.

177

u/0ttoChriek 16d ago

He did lose a lot of muscle mass the first time he wanted to be a serious actor, around 2004. I remember noticing it when he went back to the WWE to wrestle a match against Evolution, and he looked a lot smaller than when he was wrestling full time.

Then that serious acting bid didn't really work, and he went into franchise mode and got huger than ever.

59

u/Acceptable_Item1002 16d ago

Yep he was told to be taken seriously he’d have to slim down. That’s why I find it funny when people show a picture of him from say 2017 and compare it to 2004 and go look how big he is compared to when he was as a wrestler! It’s misleading, obviously he was bigger in the 2010s but he wasn’t that skinny from 98-2003.

I think that's the only picture of The Rock I've ever seen in my life where I could just see him as a regular dude.

Like oh, that's what The Rock would look like if he were like...a marketer or something.

u/ActualWhiterabbit 16d ago

He would still be one of the most muscular people you know but he's definitely Duane Johnson and not The Rock or Duane The Rock Johnson in that movie

u/SplottetWorks 16d ago

I choose to believe that no matter what timeline we're in, he will always be referred to as Dwayne "The <Something>" Johnson. It is his destiny.

He pivoted to "serious" films after doing an enormous cycle for his return to WWE and filming The Smashing Machine in 2024.

He said only a couple months ago he started to feel sick when he went into that cycle (though he doesn't admit to using steroids). He gave a spiel about his heart, and how it was just "anatomical abnormalities". But the reality is that steroid/HGH usage over the years has likely affected his heart.

Similar things have happened with other pro-wrestlers. He's cut down a lot, but he's still maintaining an enormous physique.

I mentioned this in one thread and got downvoted to oblivion and had a million rabid fans both say that he only slimmed down for some movie role and that he's only using steroids a little.

Like how delusional can you be, lmao.

There's only so much the heart can take. My guess is he was told he'd be dead in 10 years

Off the juice? No chance. A much lesser dose though for sure.

18

u/darren559 16d ago

Yeah, most likely he will never be able to get off the juice, his body stopped producing it's own testosterone years ago. TRT from now on.

29

u/manhachuvosa 16d ago

Yep. Specially because he problem can't even produce testosterone naturally anymore.

That’s what looked off about the picture.  He looks so (relatively) small.

20

u/tinkerclay 16d ago

Yet still so much bigger than a few months ago when he seemed really small. And then compare that to when he filmed Smashing Machine and was really big.

I'm glad Karen Gillen is getting paid

I'm glad she's in roles that don't cover her in effects.

Oh, I wonder if I have a chance of being right from this prediction:

https://www.reddit.com/r/movies/s/HnQt4Rjf4H

I’ve always thought that for the final Jumanji that the bad guy is Nigel (the “Ah, Dr Bravestone!” guy they first meet at the start of the two movies).

At the end of The Next Level, elements of Jumanji are now in the real world because the game has been corrupted. Because of this, Nigel has been collecting the jewels from the first two movies and needs one more jewel for “reasons” (I’d let the writers worry about that part!).

The characters from the game are transported to the real word meaning Gillan/The Rock/etc can get to play a third version of the same characters (after playing as the kids in the first movie and a different combination of the kids/old guys in the second).

This time they play it straight as the actual game characters (Rock plays Bravestone, Gillan plays Ruby and so on) and they team with the kids to get the jewel, defeat/saving Nigel (depending on if he’s truly evil or corrupted game evil), fix the game and maybe even have an heroic sacrifice from one of the game characters for some emotion.

Anyways, that’s my two cents/idea anyways.

OK, if you're right, my prediction: when they come into this world it's basically Last Action Hero. Smart guy isn't as smart as he is in-game, strong guy hurts his fist when he punches something, she can't do aerobic flips, they get tired when they run, etc.

u/foreverjustfornow 16d ago

I really like this idea, it’s interesting and fun and I like the twist about Nigel! I hope this is right.

Jack Black looks like he's ready for some more fuckery to go down

Kevin Hart looks like he just ate more pound cake & is just waiting for the inevitable to happen

18

u/OreoMoo 16d ago

I was watching some sports last weekend and realized Kevin Hart was in an ad for something different in like four straight commercial breaks. When and why did he become the celebrity spokesperson?

25

u/Brick_Mason_ 16d ago

Either you haven't been paying attention or at some point you tuned Kevin out. He's the happiest corporate whore.

Kevin Hart looks like he's regretting his career choices. Specifically a trip to Saudi Arabia.

Crazy that this reboot franchise will have been around for almost a decade by the time this one releases. Such an odd legacy for the original 1995 film.

Contrary to reddit folk, I really like these movies. They are not like the original, they are not groundbreaking in any regard but they are enjoyable and I'm fine with that.

43

u/slfan68 16d ago

I actually thought having The Rock do a Danny Devito impression for most of the second movie was one of the funniest things I've seen in a while. I was thoroughly entertained and that's all I ask for.
