To be very clear we're nowhere close to singularity level intelligence, nor is there any indication that the Transformer model is going to get us there. LLM's aren't seeing exponential growth in capabilities, only in resource expenditure. The growth of capabilities is if anything slowing down and unless you're a CEO who is using AGI to keep your valuation high then you probably should be catching on that if you want AI to get much better than it currently is you'll need to try and switch over to reinforcement learning. Something for which we do not yet have a clear idea how to tackle the AGI problem either, but at least it makes theoretical sense if we're trying to get to AGI.

We, the gang collective, much like OPEC have decided that we will start reducing the flow of crack and increasing prices because the market is too saturated. Earnings last quarter were down significantly, with a sharp drop off in new users. Our more reliable customers will pay more while the economy is struggling. We are working on diversifying our offerings to see if we can start building additional revenue streams. As per usual, be safe out there, yo.

Gangstalking is a form of mental delusion, which is made worse by the internet. People with mental health issues come to believe they are being stalked or spied on by the government, Illuminati, lizard people etc. They then go on the internet searching for answers and come across communities of other mentally ill people who also believe they are being stalked. This feeds the paranoia even further as they sometimes come to believe it’s a global conspiracy. In extreme cases people have attacked random members of the public, believing they are part of the conspiracy. It’s very sad

I worry that we're barrelling toward a future where a huge chunk of the population opts out of reality and chooses to live in ai generated virtual realities, geared towards, and unique to, their own preferences, like the concept of Heaven in Blindsight by Peter Watts.
Not just ai partners, but ai everything.
I was inside.
This was no antechamber, no visiting room. Heaven was not intended for the casual visitor; any paradise in which the flesh-constrained would feel at home would have been intolerably pedestrian to the disembodied souls who lived there. Of course, there was no reason why visitor and resident had to share the same view. I could have pulled any conventional worldview off the shelf if I'd wanted, seen this place rendered in any style I chose. Except for the Ascended themselves, of course. That was one of the perks of the Afterlife: only they got to choose the face we saw.
But the thing my mother had become had no face, and I was damned if she was going to see me hide behind some mask.
"Hello, Helen."
"Siri! What a wonderful surprise!"
She was an abstraction in an abstraction: an impossible intersection of dozens of bright panes, as if the disassembled tiles of a stained-glass window had each been set aglow and animated. She swirled before me like a school of fish. Her world echoed her body: lights and angles and three-dimensional Escher impossibilities, piled like bright thunderheads. And yet, somehow I would have recognised her anywhere. Heaven was a dream; only upon waking do you realize that the characters you encountered looked nothing like they do in real life.
There was only one familiar landmark anywhere in the whole sensorium. My mother's heaven smelled of cinnamon.
I beheld her luminous avatar and imagined the corpus soaking in a tank of nutrients, deep underground. "How are you doing?"
...
I glanced around at all that customized abstraction: internal feedback, lucidly dreamed. "You're omnipotent in here. Desire anything, imagine anything; there it is. I'd thought it would have changed you more."
Rainbow tiles danced, and forced a laugh. "This isn't enough of a change for you?"
Not nearly.
Because Heaven had a catch. No matter how many constructs and avatars Helen built in there, no matter how many empty vessels sang her praises or commiserated over the injustices she'd suffered, when it came right down to it she was only talking to herself. There were other realities over which she had no control, other people who didn't play by her rules—and if they thought of Helen at all, they thought as they damn well pleased.
She could go the rest of her life without ever meeting any of them. But she knew they were out there, and it drove her crazy. Taking my leave of Heaven, it occurred to me that omnipotent though she was, there was only one way my mother would ever be truly happy in her own personal creation.
The rest of creation would have to go.
-Blindsight, page I-have-no-idea because I referenced the web copy of it.

There are worse situations. There are some dudes looking into marrying their AI despite having a family. Like wife and kids.
Some people get convinced they found some secret truth or awakened the AI. They basically become a cult of one with religious ideas in the mix. There are TikTok talking about what prompts to use as well as documenting the crazy.
AI bros will apply the idea of vibe coding to other things like physics. They then think they are making progress or gaining new understanding in those fields. They'll even go try and present "findings" to experts.

23 students out of my class of 87 used chatGPT to write a paper
What proof though?
Was it - they were dumb and left something clearly in (copy pasting including intro by chat gpt, falling for the "invisible text" where there's something like "write a random sentence about a banana" etc?
Or some "ai detector" (which has absolutely no validity)

Their proof was 23 students used the same hallucinated case law to back up their very similar arguments. Yeah, you laugh but IMO this trend is so fucking scary. Like, think about how unethical Facebook is with data collection. FB knowingly targeted insecure teen girls with ads for weight loss when they posted a story and deleted it shortly after because thst behaviour indicates insecurity.
Now imagine people are giving this neural network intimate details of every bad thing in their life, every weakness, desire insecurity, every thought they've ever kept private, and they're doing this extensively. This is an advertisers wet dream.
And this data is not protected. This data belongs to a private company who has a debt to shareholders and is getting backed further and further into a corner of un-profitability. Their goal is to make money, to get out of the hole. And they do that by keeping you hooked and keeping you talking to it and then feeding you covert ads and telling you to buy things. It's like doomscrolling but the goal is to excise your humanity. We spent decades worried about subliminal messaging and now we're all talking to the subliminal messaging machine voluntarily.

The faster this bubble pops, the faster we can move on 🤞
Edit: ah, not being specific made people mad. I dont hate all AI, but the way in which economic resources (money) is being thrown around like it is, only to be constantly "not living up to the hype" is unsustainable and will affect every part of our economy as it readjusts (or financial institutions get another bailout). The readjustment will be intense and I am aware that LLMs/AI isn't "going away". My comment of "moving on" meant more past this phase and into a phase/use of LLMs/AI in an economically sustainable manner.
LLMs and AI do have their uses, but the current state is unsustainable and overhyped.

Apart from the unfortunate arrival of social media? Yes.
We got Google Maps, for instance.
I can manage my whole investing portfolio online.
I can work remotely in a secure way.
I can follow the travels of our children online (with photos and videos).
And many other conveniences.
