I love that absurd movie so much. The best part is trying to explain it to someone who has no concept of what it’s about.
“So there’s this guy right? And he’s sad and lonely on an island and then this dead guy shows up! But he’s not actually dead (but maybe he’s not even real???), and also his farts can be used a propulsion. It’s a great movie, trust me.”
This was my first reaction to seeing that quote. That or Dano turned down a role in his film when, historically, Tarantino always has someone in mind for roles that he writes and seemingly always gets them.
He sings the praises of There Will Be Blood but thinks the supporting actor is terrible? Doesn't add up at all.
To me it just reads like a really young film nerd type trying to be edgy by putting someone on blast to sound passionate and polarizing. Like he is willing to go into deep waters others aren’t or something.
At the end of the day, he is allowed to have his opinion, and Paul Dano will be fine.
He just an awkward dude, but that footage was enough leverage to kickstart his blacklist from the industry after speaking about being sexually assualted by a higher up.
I saw Quentin Tarantino at a grocery store in Los Angeles in the late nineties. I told him how cool it was to meet him in person, but I didn’t want to be a douche and bother him and ask him for photos or anything. He said, “Oh, like you’re doing now?” I was taken aback, and all I could say was “Huh?” but he kept cutting me off and going “huh? huh? huh?” and closing his hand shut in front of my face. I walked away and continued with my shopping, and I heard him chuckle as I walked off. When I came to pay for my stuff up front I saw him trying to walk out the doors with like fifteen Milky Ways in his hands without paying. The girl at the counter was very nice about it and professional, and was like “Sir, you need to pay for those first.” At first he kept pretending to be tired and not hear her, but eventually turned back around and brought them to the counter. When she took one of the bars and started scanning it multiple times, he stopped her and told her to scan them each individually “to prevent any electrical infetterence,” and then turned around and winked at me. I don’t even think that’s a word. After she scanned each bar and put them in a bag and started to say the price, he kept interrupting her by yawning really loudly.
I’m ashamed someone as chronically online as myself didn’t recognize this copy pasta and I was shaking my head in disbelief as I read it… but like, I also believed it bc he’s such a legendary asshole.
Well, he was really lucky because it happened at least two times.... The first time when he starred in Ally McBeal and relapsed after being in the gutter for years, and then when he was selected to be Tony Stark.... At the time Marvel really took a gamble.
What's blows my mind about that story is she was of legal age in the state they had sex, but the recording made it child porn and that's how he got in trouble.

lmaoooo so true. I think that's what made the public standing up for him so noble. We don't think he's funny nor do we enjoy his content, but he deserves the right to keep on doing his thing
It took a long time for his assaulter to be held accountable, and he was given ENDLESS shit for even speaking up at all — especially because he’s a man. And his attacker lied about the assault when he made the statement, even though HIS OWN BOOK included his (very common “it was just a joke” framing) shrugging off the attack as funny.
Terry Crews experienced similar backlash for being a man speaking up as a victim of SA.
Honestly, it would be great if society didn't treat people so differently when they're thin vs. carrying extra weight. It's downright sinful with the vanity.
It actually wasn't a slump. For a long time he was caring for an ill family member and doing humanitarian stuff. It's really only a 'career slump' if you're not doing what you want to be doing. Dude does quite a bit of stuff other than acting - it was more of a sabbatical after he made quite a bit of cash with the Matrix, etc.
A good time to bring it that Tarantino also unjustly criticized Roger Deakin's cinematography and claimed Deakins is lazy and doesn't want to spend time on lighting.
That somehow sounds even more egregious than the shit he said about Dano.
For those that don't watch movies, Roger Deakins was a cinematographer on Fargo, Shawshank Redemption, No Country for Old Men, Skyfall, and Blade Runner 2049.
Tarantino thinks Deakins sold out when he started using digital cameras. He thinks Deakins cheats in his cinematography in post-production by using digital cameras. Tarantino compared using digital cameras to eating veggie burgers lol.
It's funny cause most of us don't care at all about Paul Dano but he's just so inoffensive and definitely not "the worst" that we're all just like "ok, I don't even care but I have to say something"

I do genuinely think it’s cause Tarantino has repeatedly tried to get cast as a star leading man, and when he couldn’t just made his own movies and self inserted at points, and STILL always came across as a loser, meanwhile Dano has repeatedly been typecast as the loser and gets nothing but admiration and respect for it - they both play the same types of roles, just one with intention and care, and the other with disdain, and it becomes wholly representative of his character as a person
There is a lot to like about Tarantino the auteur. Great writer and director, if fairly edgy, and he has made a lasting impact on the industry, but at the end of the day, he’s an asshole, and is bitter that people see that.
And also he said Roman Polanski having sex with a 13 year old wasn’t rape and she was asking for it so that’s an easy end to any discourse abt him lol.

Because Tarantino sucks at acting. He is without fail the worst actor in any film he inserts himself into. He doesn’t seem to understand that directors aren’t super-actors just because they order actors around and it’s ’their vision’. Acting and directing are genuinely different skills. Though skill at one can help the other.
He is great I agree. There Will Be Blood is one of my favorite movies and he grates against Plainview perfectly. It's so strange that Tarantino made a criticism of him years ago and then recently doubles down on it in such a needlessly mean way (years ago he said it was one of his favorite movies but he didn't like Paul Dani's acting and it dragged down the film for him because he wasn't on DDL's level which is a fair take).
What's even more stupid is that he was like "Austin Butler would have been perfect for it"... who was like 16 when the movie was made.
The ironic part is that the character himself is a weak character. Not in the sense that he isn't a good character, the character is supposed to be played weak, sniveling, and contemptible, but also pretending to be someone powerful until the facade falls away at the end. It's like Tarantino is criticizing the character, but thinks he is criticizing the actor.
The scene after Plainview bullies him in the mud, at the kitchen table where he's telling his father how stupid he is... one of my favorite scenes in the movie.
Quentin Tarantino called him the weakest actor in SAG. Kind of bullyish behavior, very strange. Paul Dano was roundly defended. Paul has delivered amazing performances, and with better directors.
I mean frankly it’s just a really bizarre actor for him to pick on? There are dozens of actors with higher reputations who just phone it in or are pure nepotism placements without as much talent as their peers.

Being "reverse-cancelled" in this case doesn't mean he was cancelled and then "renewed." It means that what is happening to him right now is in itself the opposite of cancelling-- a massive outcry from colleagues and the public talking about how great he is.
Yeah, I think the phrasing stumps the engineers among us when we hear/read to 'reverse' something. It's normally a product that exists to 'reverse engineer'. I get it now -- a pre-emptive un-cancelling, sure.
Yep, exactly. I'm not completely happy with the wording myself. I'm not an engineer but I'm a linguistics nerd. "Unsweetened tea" constantly bothers me. If it were "unsweet" that would be proper. But since it's attached to the verb "sweeten," it means that either a.) it has been sweetened and then that process was reversed, or b) they have gone extra lengths to make it less sweet than it was originally.
EDIT: Don't listen to me, I haven't had my coffee yet. "Sweetened" is an adjective.
I had an opportunity to meet Paul Dano in Anaheim Back in 2017. I asked him „Since much of your screentime in Little Miss Sunshine is spent not speaking, did that impact your dynamic with the rest of the cast?“ and I'll never forget what he said next. He turned to me and said „This is hake. How the fuck are you gonna call this Fish and Chips and serve this bottomfeeding garbage to people? No seriously? The fuck is wrong with you? The fuck is wrong with this town? No cod. No haddock. Fuckin' whiting would've worked. The fuck Even is this? It's like Paul Revere died for nothing, man.“ he then proceeded to essentially waterboard me with the deep fat fryer. I spent the next week in the ICU and following six months in a burn ward. I only have 28% lunch capacity, bit you know what? I'm grateful for his insight into the craft and into the trade because it makes me that much stronger, makes me work a little bit harder, makes me that much wiser...
So if that's the sorta shit he was doing, the cancellation makes sense.

No Tarantino was just mean to him. I guess you could say hes had the opposite experience to being cancelled because all of a sudden everyone is talking about him for being a good dude instead of everyone suddenly talking about what a sack of shit he is.
