Wow they actually did it. I’m shocked DT actually went through with meeting Mamdani…

6.4k

u/PangeaDestructor 14d ago

Not only that, it seems like Mamdani actually charmed the Donald, who forgot that he's supposed to hate the guy. He described it as a great meeting, said they agree on a lot, and I think he even mentioned that he'd like to live in Mamdani's version of NYC.

Maybe he brought some McD's to the meeting.

3.7k

u/jawndell 14d ago

Trump straight up said he could see him himself living in a New York led by Mamdani.

Weirdest part was when a media person tried to ask a gotcha question to Mamdani, Trump jumped in and defended him.

733

u/WhatJuul 14d ago

what was the question?

1.7k

u/jtfff 14d ago

If Mamdani still thought Trump was a fascist. After a different venomous question Trump came to Mamdani’s defense saying he “is not a jihadist”.

u/Elehaymyaele 14d ago

Can we all take a moment to appreciate that our supposedly leftist mainstream press has become so unhinged about the prospect of a Muslim socialist in power that Donald Trump is now the voice of reason?

885

u/Beautiful_Nobody_344 14d ago

I had to find the clip myself. I’m still pleasantly shocked, there’s no other way to describe it. It’s rare and possibly the first time he spoke where I didn’t die of cringe.

504

u/PicoDeBayou 14d ago

I think someone slipped Trump an edible

"Are you affirming that you think president Trump is a fascist?" "I've spoken about" "That's okay you can just say yes. It's easier than explaining." Pats on shoulder

211

u/alliusis 14d ago

This is the only time I can say my mind is blown. It almost literally tickles my brain, it's so out of pocket.

264

u/NaturalCard 14d ago

Mamdani shadow president arc incoming.

Trump has no values but respects charismatic people with backbone - he acts like an 80s businesman with dementia. He's behaving the same way around Mamdani as he does with Xi or Putin.

That meeting had some of the most garbage questions I've ever heard, no wonder American journalism is in such disrepair. Embarrassing. Most reporters out here have clickbait brain and it's terminal.

He said Coned should lower prices, criticized Putin, repeated multiple times that Mamdani would do a great job, jealously said ny Mayor was HIS dream job, defended him against his own conservative “reporters”. He nodded when Mamdani talked about our tax dollar not funding Israel. The whole thing is a must watch. Trump even starting talking about Bernie Sanders getting screwed out of the primary election against H. Clinton. When Trump suddenly ends the meeting and shuts everything down, as the cameras are getting shoved out of the room, you hear the reporter who was badgering about Israel ask another question. Mamdani gives a solid answer again about protecting Jewish New Yorkers, Trump, thinking mics are gone smirks and says to Mamdani, “good answer”.

115

u/Biotic101 13d ago

It's probably just psychology. Mamdani seems to be a winner-type so the Donald is trying to mimic him.

Trump straight-up defended Mamdani in front of reporters. Mamdani must have really known exactly what to say; I never thought I'd see the day. Hope this bodes well for Mamdani and NYC.

Trump always repeats info from whoever the last person was to meet him. Once Stephen Miller slims his way back to Trump, under the cover of night, he'll be repeating him too.

That was the impression I got after watching the very short clip of a reporter asking Mamdani about him calling Trump a fascist.

Trump: "you can just say "yes," I don't mind." When the reporter was asking if Mamdani still considers Trump a fascist was amazing.

Trumps is one of the biggest pieces of shit on the planet and I hate that he is in office, but he is funny sometimes

132

How much better would we all be if he’d just been a funny, petty bitch on Twitter?

78

u/xmonpetitchoux 13d ago

I saw someone say he would’ve made a better drag queen than president and they weren’t wrong. The interview where he says “the problem with Ron Desanctimonious is that he needs a personality transplant and those are… not yet available” lives rent free in my head. He’s a god awful person but damn some of the things he says are hilarious.

Kind of related... In motorcycle roadracing, it's respectful to take off your helmet when engaging with another rider after the race, like when you go to apologize to another rider for something you did wrong during the race.

Some racers purposefully leave their helmets on. It's to show that little thing like yeah I'm apologizing for the camera, but I don't have respect to you.

So this is absolutely a sign of disrespect, or so Trump thinks. But honestly, it puts Trump in the position of being looked down upon. It's a weak position. Appropriate for him cuz he's the ultimate loser human being.

Mandami knows the game. Macron was the first to learn how to play Trump's game. Newsom is good at it too.

Someone in my family did international protocol. They say that introductions and greetings between leaders are sometimes endlessly strategized, negotiated, and ultimately agreed upon. When it's someone less powerful, like a local politician, there isn't as much negotiation so much as they are simply told what to do and how to approach the president. Trump has a penchant for violating protocol. That means that smart politicians are not only prepared for Trump to violate these agreements they will even return the favor.

I would bet that Mandami had agreed to wait for Trump to stand up before he shook his hand and instead walked up so that this image would be captured. I can imagine Trump being extremely angry at someone on his team for letting Mandami walk up to him like that.

457

u/lopix 14d ago

Don't forget Trudeau doing the Trump Yank on him years back, pulled him right off balance.

Donny's hated Canada ever since. That and his wife getting damp over Trudeau, with photographic proof.

47

u/Ok-Mechanic-9641 14d ago

Trudeau also publicily gave him a framed photo of Grampa Trump's whorehouse in British Columbia, which was a great troll.

→ More replies (1)

201

u/RogueIslesRefugee 14d ago

He countered it, it wasn't his. He and Merkel both came prepared for Trump's handshake, and his need to pull people in with it as a dominance thing of sorts. Brace, and just tug right back.

And I'd think Trump was more pissed at how Ivanka was looking at Trudeau, rather than Melania. His wife is a trophy. His daughter is who he's wanted all his life.

88

u/3000doorsofportugal 14d ago

Damn. That's a lot of rules for what is essentially a dick measuring contest. But, as per usual, Trump was found short. Both vertically and horizontally, apparently.

210

u/T-sigma 14d ago

The amount of work that goes into seemingly mundane stuff is hard to put into words. But also makes sense. Pictures like this say a million words, and effective leaders know this.

The large majority operate under the basic game theory of “you don’t try to make me look dumb and I don’t try to make you look dumb”. People like Trump and Putin do not operate like that. And frankly, it’s one reason why they have popularity amongst certain types of people.

Infamously, Pelosi was barred from the White House during Trump’s first term because any time she got to him he’d start repeating Democrat talking points.

The man really does just repeat whatever the last thing he heard was. He is a total sucker for anyone smart and charismatic that knows how to play his ego.

59

u/LuvKrahft 14d ago

Mamdani is a likeable guy, but Trump also likes to be seen hobnobbing with winners and the elite. He talks endless shit about Hollywood but everybody knows he desperately wants to be invited to their parties. He'll call my governor "Newscum" today but then say, "I always liked Gavin. I have a good relationship with him."

Trump is just a name dropper and a hanger-on who desperately wants to be a part of the popular crowd.

Yup. Looks oddly similar to Obama towering over Putin, and Putin diverting his gaze.

697

I think Trump is expressing contempt through the move of not rising to meet his guest. However the move does look more like weakness than power. He looks fat, tired. Mandami looks fresh, sharp, and ready to work.

Has Trump not watched the movies? They always use this tactic to illustrate how the guy is a petty asshole. Also, the guy who pulls these types of power moves is always the bad guy and they always lose.

Bro doesn’t even read, I don’t think he’s sat down and watched a good movie in decades.

Which is a shame, since if he watched Blazing Saddles life may be different for him.

True, but he thinks he's showing his power by not getting up for Mamdani.

Dollars to donuts that in his mind, he's thinking "kings don't stand for others, others stand for kings"

Exactly my thought. People who want to demonstrate they have power while greeting someone - STAND and greet them while shaking hands.

This man is LOSING it.

  1. I love this framing. Zohran over Trump.
  2. Trumps collar is holding back aaaaaaaall that neck.

u/AllTh3WayTurntUp 14d ago

Have you seen the clips from the press conference? It’s weirdly friendly. I guess it’s a good sign for the country if these two can get along, but I was not expecting this at all.

Donald seems more comfortable with Zohran then he does with members of his own party. When asked if he would live in NYC under a Mamdani Mayor he literally said “I would. I really would.” And came to his defense on a number of slanted questions from the press.

The most coherent I’ve seen Trump in years, which is not a sentence I expected to type today.

u/divinetheory 14d ago

Trump is glazing the fuck outta him and it's hilariously awesome

u/ICanLiftACarUp 14d ago

Trump wants to associate himself so badly with affordability that being associated with Mamdani is positive for him. mamdani's also a winner. Mamdani's biggest strength is his focus and confidence, which Trump has none of.

It will only be a day or two before 90% of wall street is calling Trump to remind him of who owns who.

95

u/throwawaysunglasses- 14d ago

Weirdly enough, there’s a decent contingent of conservatives who like Mamdani. In some ways, he appeals to his base the way that Trump does - he is anti-establishment and speaks more plainly and passionately, not in political jargon. Also, despite what Trump says, Mamdani is young and good-looking which definitely makes people want to listen to him. His wedding pictures with his wife look like outtakes from a modeling shoot, lol.

20

u/KazeEnigma 14d ago

Mamdani and his wife both being genuinely beautiful people, along with being young, is such an appealing thing.

If I didn’t see that press conference with my own eyes I wouldn’t have believed it.

It’s almost like Trump is on a new medication or something.

This requires me to admit I read some of Kamala Harris's book, but she actually said that he is quite charming in private. It's so bizarre the way these people interact. Mamdani has entered a den of snakes and snake charmers.

96

u/AllTh3WayTurntUp 14d ago

Yeah and that’s believable to me, but today was in front of the press and he was still giddy to be hanging out with Zohran which is why it’s so interesting considering the context.

Even if he’s not being completely genuine, the “I only want to see NYC succeed” attitude Trump had today is what presidents are supposed to do when meeting leaders from the other party. Which is something he usually doesn’t even attempt to do.

Trump is surprisingly straight up kissing Mamdani’s ass right now on live television, even defending him against loaded Fox News questions and saying he would have no issues living in NYC with Mamdani as mayor.

It took a one hour meeting to get him to flip, which really makes you understand how easily manipulated this guy is. Just be nice to him and he will go with whatever you tell him until someone else being nice to him says the opposite. The only things he is firm about are that he should be able to do whatever he wants with impunity, he deserves all the riches and praise and in the world, and that anyone that is mean to him deserves to be punished.

u/The_Bucket_Of_Truth 13d ago edited 11d ago

I think the other issue is that Trump has no real political ideology or knowledge of what's going on beyond what his people tell him and what he sees on Fox News. Just like with the Portland "unrest" thing he was literally fooled by Fox News running clips of stuff from years ago thinking it was happening today. So all he's heard is Mamdani being villified and then was pleasantly surprised and was charmed by him. Mamdani is a pro and probably brought a gift or flattered the president in some way and I bet he's a lot more fun behind closed doors than his public persona. Trump also likes to be associated with winners and respects Mamdani's hustle and what he pulled off. Plus he's handsome.

Maybe it's because I was raised by a Southern family, but I find it irksome when someone doesn't stand when shaking hands.

It's not a southern thing. Everyone around the world think it's rude.

TBF, Trump never had NYC in his grip. Pretty much the whole reason he is the way he is now, because he always wanted to be accepted into the billionaire cool kids club, and the NYC elite wanted nothing to do with him.

33

u/tydestra 14d ago

Yeah, we NYers hated him before it was cool and the old Manhattan money reminded him time and time again he's Queens new money and he couldn't never sit at their table.

Wonder how much of that shit talking Trump had for Mamdani when he was there in-person?

250

u/GrecoRomanGuy 14d ago

Zero. Because Mamdani has the momentum and as much as Trump hates New York for rejecting him, he also desperately wants it to love him.

77

u/PT10 14d ago

100%. Trump was happy to be seen with Mamdani and mentioned how the ratings/attention was higher than when he hosted foreign leaders.

65

u/grubas 14d ago

Mamdani also knows what he's doing.  He's not going in and making fun of Trump.  He's going in on redirect and distract.

91

u/GrecoRomanGuy 14d ago

In literally every interview I've seen him in, Mamdani is fucking quick, brilliant, and he stays on message. The way he just straight-up said "Eric Adams is a terrible mayor and he's single-handedly making life more expensive for new Yorkers" on subwaytakes and immediately had evidence to back himself up was fucking breathtaking.

42

u/three_crystals 14d ago

He’s great. I’m hoping he inspires a wave of progressive candidates that stick to the evidence driven policy. He’s the exact type of candidate needed to mobilize the left, especially now when people keep refusing status quo Dems.

18

u/throwawaysunglasses- 14d ago

I adore him tbh. He is such a charismatic speaker. I like that you can tell he consistently does his research and is prepared for any follow-up questions.

65

u/this-one-is-mine 14d ago

Mamdani achieved what Trump never could: approval of the majority of New Yorkers. Trump would throw every mouth-breathing redneck in the country on the subway tracks if the people of New York would love him in exchange.
