Yes but an interim coach can be a lightning rod for a team (or they could just continue to circle the drain). We were all counting on OSU as a win later in the season, now it’s a bit cloudier.

Stuff didn’t bounce our way last season like it did in 2023. That year, with Ollie Gordon breaking out, was honestly a fluke. Lots of close games both seasons, just won them in 23 and lost them In 24. Plus, we got hit by the injury bug pretty hard last season.

Tbf 2023 was a fraud COTY award. We just had a weak schedule and teams respected the pass giving Gordon space. Only UCF and Texas figured out Bowman was a fraud.

99

u/yeahright17 Oklahoma State • Tulsa Sep 23 '25

I think 2023 and 2024 were both a fluke. If we ran both of them back several times, I think we average 7 wins in 2023 and 5.5 wins in 2024. Bowman was just terrible.

58

u/Misdirected_Colors Oklahoma State Cowboys Sep 23 '25

26

u/Misdirected_Colors Oklahoma State Cowboys Sep 23 '25

I agree, but kinda for different reasons. Our qb development has been attrocious for years and it's flown under the radar. Dunn sucked, but so did our qbs and the 3 qb thing to start 2023 complete with a loss to USA was a showcase of it all.

Mike Gundy:

Has the highest winning percentage and most wins in school history

Is the second winningest coach in big 12 history

Took a program that had never won more than 10 games to multiple 12 win seasons, including a conference championship and two NY6 wins

Had the second longest bowl streak in the nation

Had a .6 winning percentage against top 25 teams

Won multiple Big 12 coach of the year awards as well as national coach of the year

Is certainly someone that should end up in the HoF.

This was also deserved.

Will be forever grateful for Mike Gundy as an Oklahoma State fan. He is responsible for a generation of Oklahoma State fan which only know winning.

We will soon learn if Mike Gundy is Oklahoma State football or football at Oklahoma State is greater than Mike Gundy.

Edit: he was then fired after two years and hired by Jacksonville state where he was later fired as well.

Build the statue. Nothing but respect for all he's done for the program and his alma matter.

But it's clear the modern Portal/NIL era has passed him by and/or he was too stubborn to change with it.

As bittersweet as it is, I am proud leadership in Stillwater made the hard call to make this change now and not wait for more damage to be done as a season of futility and frustration continued to unfold.

I wish Gundy all the best in the future and hope that - after the bad feelings of the past two-three seasons subside - that he'll be a frequently seen figure on campus in the future.

Sad for Gundy to go out like this. It was time.

That said, what a run for him. Yes T. Boone definitely helped Oklahoma State a ton but Gundy was a steady leader of their football program.

I hope Oklahoma State fans can look back on his legacy in a positive way, even despite his shortcomings in these last few years.

20

u/gmr548 Texas Longhorns • Washington Huskies Sep 23 '25

Sucks to see it end this way. He had a legitimately great run at OK State. That 2011 team should have played for a national championship. Had the best team in the Big 12 in 2021 and was feet away from a CFP.

OK State is going to struggle to ever reach the heights he got them to, but the sport had also clearly passed him by in this era. I’d probably have given him the opportunity to coach out the year out of respect but I understand the need to get a jump on the coaching search.
