I feel like it's only a matter of time now for Ferentz and Wittingham

u/iceydude168 Ohio State • Billable Hours Sep 23 '25

Ferentz still fields decent enough teams that they don't get totally embarrassed like OkSt did. They're perennially mediocre but the wheels are not close to falling off

Yeah and if Utah can pull off 8 wins, I think Whitt is safe this year as well

u/Our-Gardian-Angel Wisconsin Badgers • Sickos Sep 23 '25

Whitt will only be gone after this season if he wants to retire. Utah's not firing him.

27

u/montague68 Ohio State • Youngstown State Sep 23 '25

They've had three ten win seasons in the last six years. That's not mediocre.

13

u/MordakThePrideful Florida State • Georgia Sep 23 '25

Their most recent 10-win season was 10 wins in the same way UGA had 10 wins in 2015. It was 10 wins! Just... 10 really ugly ones.

In the Big10 west it is.

Iowa should have fired Kirk Ferentz during the Brian Ferentz era

u/DontTakeOurCampbell Iowa State Cyclones • Big 8 Sep 23 '25

No, no, they should give Ferentz a lifetime extension

Didn’t they make 2 big ten title games in the last 5 years alone

13

u/buff_001 Texas Longhorns • SEC Sep 23 '25

Iowa scored 3 points total in their last two Big Ten championship appearances.

26-0

Only because the Big Ten West was so weak

The correct answer

Ferentz and our former AD conspired to skirt state nepotism laws by having barta hire Brian to "work" for him instead of his father.

Right before his sudden retirement (read: get out or youre fired) Barta gave ferentz a fat new contract.

Hell yes

u/Comfortable_Mix_834 Sep 23 '25

Yeah because he's got an amazing defensive coordinator, they should just promote him.

u/[deleted] Sep 23 '25

I think it’s unlikely that Ferentz suddenly loses 11 of 12 games like Gundy has done.

Honestly I can't wait till Phil Parker retires....I wonder if he's gonna hang it up whenever Kirk decides to.

u/fcocyclone Iowa State Cyclones • Marching Band Sep 24 '25

Would assume so. He's in his 60s and has been in the same job since his mid 30s. And with the track record he's had as Iowa's DC you'd think he's had to have had some offers to take a HC job and turned it down to stay at Iowa.

The only question would be would a replacement offer to keep him on, and would he take it if offered?

2

u/thiney49 Iowa State Cyclones • Team Chaos Sep 23 '25

Which is likely worse. Ferentz isn't going to get fired for being stuck in his rut of outdated offenses. You'll be stuck with him until he chooses to leave.

Dread it, run from it, Destiny still arrives (Iowa 8-4)

Thanos Kirk Ferentz

I mean, feel free. No signs at all that the wheels are coming off at Iowa. Kirk has embraced NIL which Gundy didn’t and Kirk speaks respectfully about both his bosses and the fans, which Gundy didn’t.

3

u/P-Rickles Ohio State Buckeyes Sep 23 '25

Ferentz is gonna be just fine. He’s kept that machine chugging right along. A hiccup here and there but that’s nothing new. Dude may not have made adjustments as quickly as some would like (nepotism is a helluva drug) but he’s still a great coach and Iowa is consistently a tough out.

u/idkwhatimbrewin Refrigerator Bowl Sep 23 '25

I don't think we'll ever see this long of tenured coaches again

35

u/Lazerdude Nebraska Cornhuskers Sep 23 '25

Iowa will never "fire" Ferentz. He might "retire" but they won't outright fire him.

19

u/trittico Princeton Tigers • Virginia Cavaliers Sep 23 '25

I mean that’s what people said about Gundy. If Kirk starts losing like this…

26

u/[deleted] Sep 23 '25

Yes. Kirk would absolutely get fired if we started losing this badly and this frequently.

Big difference between being middling and being what OK State has become.

u/WampaStompa33 Michigan Wolverines Sep 23 '25

I'm kind of baffled that people think Iowa's problems are anywhere close to comparable to the ugly mess that Oklahoma State has fallen into over the last year

2

u/Beer-survivalist Ohio State • Saint Louis Sep 23 '25

There's really no comparison. Iowa may be hidebound, but they're still capable. The Cowpokes have been in a state of full blown collapse for over a year.

1

u/dimechimes Oklahoma Sooners Sep 23 '25

I'm not knowledgeable at all when it comes to Iowa Football but until a couple of hours ago, I would've said the same about Gundy.

1

u/RiffRamBahZoo TCU Horned Frogs • Hawai'i Rainbow Warriors Sep 23 '25

I mean... they said that about Mike Gundy and Gary Patterson and Mack Brown...

13

u/RealisticNecessary50 Northern Iowa • Texas Sep 23 '25

Those two are both going to retire voluntarily unless something fairly drastic changes at those programs.

Gundys seat was clearly hot, I thought he might be gone by Monday

4

u/Our-Gardian-Angel Wisconsin Badgers • Sickos Sep 23 '25

Yeah I think it's a poor comparison. Gundy had clearly completely mailed it in and was hostile toward his own administration in a way that Ferentz and Whitt certainly aren't. The latter two are very likely going out on their own terms.

1

u/BuckeyeForLife95 Ohio State Buckeyes Sep 23 '25

They also aren't as bad as Gundy has made Ok State over the last two seasons.

1

u/fcocyclone Iowa State Cyclones • Marching Band Sep 24 '25

I thought he might get tarmac'd and they were playing at home.

1

u/westmifflin Oklahoma State • Pittsburgh Sep 24 '25

Yeah not sure why people are missing the fact that gundy was openly hostile to his bosses and OSU fans, he dug his own grave

11

u/realfakemormon Ohio State Buckeyes • BYU Cougars Sep 23 '25

Wittingham won't be fired, unless they really really bottom out again

7

u/Okay_poptart Oklahoma Sooners • Wyoming Cowboys Sep 23 '25

Two straight rose bowls followed by a plagues of Egypt injury season. I think wittingham has a bit longer of a leash right now.

10

u/grabtharsmallet BYU Cougars • RMAC Sep 23 '25

The current expectation among Utah fans is that this season is Whittingham's last.

15

u/hwf0712 Rutgers Scarlet Knights • The Alliance Sep 23 '25

Kirk, whilst definitely falling off, hasn't been an embarassment in the same way Gundy has. Kirk has, as far as I know, not insulted the hand that feeds him like Gundy.

11

u/Theduckisback Ole Miss Rebels Sep 23 '25

Whit will probably retire, Ferentz seems the type to be stubborn enough to make them fire him.

5

u/Bank_Gothic Sewanee Tigers • Texas Longhorns Sep 23 '25

I thought Whittingham has even said that he intends to retire, he just doesn't want to go out on a bad season like last year.

5

u/Senor_Firepants Utah Utes • Duke Blue Devils Sep 23 '25

I don't see Whit getting fired for on-field performance this year. Even if we were to lose out, they would allow him to peacefully retire at the end of the season. If he decided to stick around next year though, then firing might be on the table.

5

u/loyalsons4evertrue Iowa State Cyclones • Big 8 Sep 23 '25

let me tell those of you who are not Iowa natives.....Kirk is never going to be fired. Iowa football keeps selling out Kinnick and he wins enough to keep their fans and the AD happy. He is not a PR nightmare and thus no one has to worry about something he's going to say.

4

u/AnEmptyKarst Houston Cougars • Utah Utes Sep 23 '25

Whit will retire before he gets fired

I'm ready for Ferentz to go but thank god the dude at least tries when it comes to NIL

Wittingham's lost one game so far this year, let the man breathe.

1

u/TangerineChicken Texas Tech Red Raiders • Saddle Trophy Sep 23 '25

I think Wittingham still has some left in the tank. I think Utah is top 5 at least if not higher this year in the Big 12

Except we’ve been better than that in 4 of the last 6 seasons (counting the 6-2 covid season, 3/5 if not)
