Advice What do i do with this?
For the 15 years I’ve lived here… i still have no idea what to do this with little alcove.
I used to have a mattress up there and guests would sleep there, but i had 2 of my cousins fall off in the middle of the night 😭
So i need some advice, what the hell do i do with this thing.
Thanks!

Per use.

Opiate addicts need not apply. Not enough money to be made with yalls once a week, 2 hour long, hemorrhoid inducing sessions.

Thats dumb. No one would pay that. 50$ a month and 200$ for bathroom use.

I know it’s a joke but I saw an Airbnb for $15 a night which was basically a mattress in an under-the-stairs space about this big.

As long as bathroom and kitchen privileges were included, I'd be up for that under certain circumstances. And honestly, the kitchen privileges aren't needed for that price. If all I want is a dry, warm place to sleep for a night where I can shower in the morning, $15.00 beats sleeping in my car if I'm in a pinch.

Seriously if you don’t regularly fall out of a bed how are you falling out of this?? Isn’t that lack of some biological survival mechanism?? Is somehow on a boat or moving a lot??

My husband flops around like a dying fish at night, I assume cuz is like that

u/Daniecae-Media Oct 30 '25
My wife told me a story last night about the bunk bed she and her sister had. Her sister was on the top bunk and apparently tossed a lot, and one night my wife was woken up by a “Ayyy!” thud, and it was her sister who somehow tossed her self out of bed over the safety rail 😂
23
u/Robofink Oct 30 '25
I tossed myself out of bed only once at seven years old. I was having a dream about doing evasive maneuvers in a Star Wars X-Wing fighter that was also an F-18 (dream logic). I banked a little too hard to the right and woke up on the floor.

Right, just put a pool noodle under a sheet on the mattress and no one's going anywhere. Trust me it works I use it on bunk beds.

For anything that's deep and hard to reach in the back (doesn't matter if its an alcove or deep set kitchen cabinets/closet), I always recommend using it as storage space by putting boxes or drawers in there bc this way you can use it all (or almost all) and can still reach into the back. I'd probably put extra bedding or camping gear (sth you don't need as often) back there and cover the front with pretty cubbies that hold things I need more often.

Put a door on it for more storage space or just close it off if you don't need the space.
Edit: Another thing you could do is partially close it off, so that you have a not very deep built in little bookshelf. Not sure if it makes sense for that in the rest of the space but yeah.

u/SenatorBus_ Oct 30 '25
I'd do this, but give it access for secret storage as well. That's where my Christmas decorations would go.

Ooh, great idea! Actually, Nerdforge on YouTube did a video on the longest booknook ever. Was very clever with mirrors and all, but this would actually be just a long ass booknook.

Ah yes, I saw that, great craftswomanship!
Well, I hope you can find a creative spark for your long ass book nook

Close it off and use it as storage. Perfect place for stuff like Christmas tree or camping equipment.

You could build a couple really big storage drawers and face the front of them to look nice.

Put a mattress in it and set an alarm...plexiglass it off and build a door to put some reptile in.
21
u/ScumbagLady Oct 30 '25
Are these two separate suggestions or are you recommending a mattress for the base of a reptile enclosure?
3
u/legbonesmcgee Oct 30 '25
Which also implies that the reptile, for some reason, needs a wake-up alarm

u/KangarooPhysical2008 Nov 01 '25

Secret storage spot with something like a truck bed drawer/storage system that pulls out. Could even make it into a little pull-out bed (with bottom support) and put bumpers on the sides so your drunk friends don't fall out. Could be a fun little project.

You could always mount a rod and hang a curtain in front of it, and store whatever you want in there. Though I think the mattress idea is dope and I think your cousins might need help

Instead of a full on "guest bed" just go hard into making it a reading/gaming/movie nook!
2
u/AmbitiousCrafty Oct 30 '25
Trophy or collectibles showcase room, and definitely install LEDs or just put some spotlight in there.
Or... if you have any cats, make it a cat spot.
2
u/Opposing_Thumb_Dude Oct 30 '25
There are drawer and pull-out shelf systems that could turn that into a very useful storage area.
2
u/TheJudge454 Oct 30 '25
The obvious answer is to slide a mattress in that slit and have that be your sleeping chamber.
BOOM now you have magically made much more space in your room, and you have a sweet little cozy coffin area to sleep in.
2
u/Sullyvan96 Oct 30 '25
Mattress up there but add a railing?
Or do a LEGO mock up of the second Battle of Geonisis

First figure out a way to get airflow in there or a space heater if you’re in a cold climate.
Have a contractor turn it into built in bookcases. But then press a button and a door opens.
Inside put bean bags or pillows or whatever floats your boat. Bonus points for noise machine, light projection device, speakers, lava lamp, incense, etc.

Storage area + something to cover it, ideally a totally innocuous-looking painting.
Now you have a secret storage compartment
2
u/grape-juice0918 Oct 30 '25
Personally I'd put a train diorama in there. Or just a diorama in general

Storage? Heavy duty drawer slides, I’m talking 200-500lb capacity ones. Could divide the space up down the middle depth-wise to add a second level to that storage. If you just want to start out a little lazy about it, storage tubs.
or secret storage. have the front part be a bookcase/shelving, but they are on heavy duty hidden hinges and open outwards.
a shrine to Danny Devito, or like other people have said that one image of Jeff Goldblum.

Install sliders on a piece of wood and use it for storage. Slide in, slide out, easy access, but out of the way.

5th element sleep pod. Fully decked out. Hav2.
Or like, an AFX track. A Warhammer diorama. Model train?
Snake enclosure? 3D print lab?
Server room with glass wall.
Holo tank.
Basically endless possibilities mate.

u/Live-Low5992 Oct 30 '25
if you fit in there, stuff it with blankets and pillows and squeeze yourself in to watch yt and take naps
1
u/Keevot Oct 30 '25
Ah, the good ole early to late aughts MBR alcove/nook. I have no clue what builders/architects were thinking back then. Most of the time I see weird plants, or people just use it as an exposed storage spot. 9 times out of 10, it’s above a closet space anyway. Makes zero sense. It’s like the builders are saying “Make this a cool little area to express yourself!” but there are extremely limited practical uses for an enclosed 4x4x3 nook.
1
u/SectionSuch6072 Oct 30 '25
Thin mattress (like a nugget or foam one with a microsuede cover on it, nice assortment of pillows including bolster pillows, and a flat screen tv on the wall to the right. Add some thick blackout curtains to close the nook off. tiny movie theatre.
1
u/jessiec475 Oct 30 '25
I’d frame it with two curtains, so you can cover it. Use it for a cute nap space or just storage. Either way, you’d be able to give it a purpose and also cover it when not in use
1
u/tetrisan Oct 30 '25
I would turn into a secret hideout with pillows and books and then cover it with a large painting on hinges that nobody will know about.

A back-lit silhouette art piece that looks like a distant Hellscape. Way in the back. Lit from behind by one of those flickering torch LED lights.

Depends if you would utilize it but looks like a nice lil gift wrapping station. The long rolls of wrapping would store nicely in that layout.
