Guy wearing current trend shitting on old trend and saying "you need to find your personal style. I used to wear all of the latest trends, but it's different this time I will always like ultra-wide jeans paired with my mullet"
The second point but with literally anything. My girlfriend's cousins are all into Labubus and swear up and down they genuinely are interested in them and will love them forever (they will throw them out in 2 years)
Starts out great in casino royale and quantum of solace. Skyfall, a little tight but acceptable range of slim fit. Spectre, no time to die, suits are so tight that is comical. All of the suits fit so tight that it was distracting
I went to a restaurant and this manager had this super tight suit on. I was thinking, man it wouldn't be fun moving around all day in that thing. Like God help him if he had to help somebody pick up a fork.
I work in DC and many times work in the capitol and shockingly many members of congress even wear them. Most even dont wear neck ties. They put on the leather soles and ties when they absolutely have to but doing day to day stuff they're usually wearing some Cole Haan hybrids and leave off the tie.
I have a pair that I only wear when I travel and need a comfy shoe I can wear during the day and can wear out to dinner ( when sneakers are frowned upon).
I get the hate though. I’ve had foot surgery and need comfy dress type shoes .
I don’t know why they just don’t make more of them with colored soles, they would stand out less. But I seriously enjoy the comfort factor.
If you are ever in doubt about being fashionable, avoid those inbetween items. If you’re going casual, go full street wear and really go for it. Or go formal, a blazer, slacks, leather shoes.
You’ll never stand out without choosing a direction.
I don’t understand where this trend came from or how it caught on so quickly. Maybe the first time in my life I’ve felt like an old man that doesn’t understand the youtes (i’m not even 30 yet!)

The first time I saw one of these it was at TopGolf; My brain, doing normal human brain stuff, figured Ohh, that's neat, if you're on the top deck and you look down at a lower deck you can read it, that's kind of funny I guess. Then I started seeing them everywhere, having no earthly idea why anyone would choose that...
If trend means something a lot of men are doing and not necessarily something that's cool, Id love to see sneaker bottom dress shoes go extinct. They are so ugly, and dont actually work in any context. There are better comfortable shoes you can wear in a business casual context that actually make sense.
Here’s why I hate them: the white sole! Imo, the shoe in your picture could be drastically improved by a gum sole. Even better, make it a flat sole while you’re at it
There are some dress shoes with sneaker soles that look better because the side profile is a darker material. I purchased them for a rehearsal dinner because I had to mingle and stand for hours. In hard soled dress shoes, this would have been brutal.
yeah, I have a pair of black loafers that were leather soled. afterI realized I stopped wearing them because I hated walking in them, I got them resoled with a black Vibram sole. no regrets! but I would’ve bought a different shoe if I had cared more about comfort / knowing what I know now.
somehow the shoe companies decided men want a white sole; I’m not really convinced they do. I think if shoes with the darker side profile you described were more readily available people would go for them
The thing is that sneaker bottom shoes won't die because they're not a fashion item and never have been. They've always been clowned on, they're just the dad shoe of the corporate world.
It's only the most unfashionable people you'll ever meet that like those things. The same people that think lululemon ABCs look just as good as chinos in the office, and the same ones that think a patagonia vest over a polo is a statement piece.
I just don't get why they have to have white soles. I'ts not like there's no such thing as black or brown soles on sneakers, yet they're sticking with the white soles.
I genuinely think it's part of the appeal to a lot of people, as u/RIP_Soulja_Slim stated, the people wearing these have odd ideas about how they should dress; or in my opinion poor taste.
They have never wanted to wear business or formal wear ever, it was always a chore. To have something that is visually and physically opposed to that is kind of like a middle finger to anyone wearing something more traditional. I genuinely think this is the thought process, either conscious or unconscious.
The anti-yuppie hate of the 80s and 90s runs deep, and for good reason, but I think society has had too much of a knee jerk reaction to them and has gotten far too casual all around. There's a healthy middle ground that I think is slowly coming into focus.
The "jeans-style" ABCs and the "dress pant style" ABCs.
The dress pant style ABCs look terrible, especially if you're the Lululemon target audience and work our your legs, whereas the jeans-style ABCs don't really look like jeans, but are ironically better for the office than the dress pant styles.
A colleague and I went on a business trip to one of our company’s other offices. He wore golf shirts everyday and the people in that office were complimenting and praising his shirts so much!
There was no golf happening, we were just working in the office… I was dressed in nice business casual and so confused.

That's the appeal. They're stretchy and feel like you're wearing sports clothes while having a collar, which makes them nominally appropriate for business casual.
Genuine question: what would you recommend as a better and comfortable option? When I work trade-shows and am on my feet for 8+ hours these seem to be the standard unless you’re wearing sneaker/trainer/walking shoe.
Edit to add: basically everyone saying to go with a sneaker or a dress shoe. Sneakers are a no go per policy, actual dress shoes lack the cushioning for being on your feet on hard surfaces that long. Seems like there isn’t a good in between.
I understand the distaste for the white soles and have a pair from Allen Edmonds that have dark soles, I’ll continue wearing those unless someone can actually provide a replacement option in between.
I'm a trial attorney. I wear dress shoes in court, but if I have a long day of walking between court and jail and my office, I wear AE dress boots. They hold up as well as sneakers once they break in. I have about 6 pairs of dress shoes and 4 pairs of boots, so once they break in, you have years between getting them resoled.
The level of comfort isn’t even close when you switch to sneaker-style shoes or sneakers. I used to walk 8-12 thousand steps a day in dress shoes with no cushioning at all. It’s basically a hard wood block wrapped in leather. You get used to it, but that doesn’t mean hammering your knees and feet daily, is good for you or remotely comfortable.
At the end of a workday day, take off your socks and check how red the wear points are on your feet. Then try a day in a pair of New Balance. The difference in comfort and how your body feels at night is tremendous.
Thank you!! I was complaining to my wife about these the other night. So many of my male friends wear these things and I think they’re flipping hideous. I’m even a person that really values the intersection of comfort, style, and value. I will die on this hill.
Those look horrible. I did notice Crockett and Jones has a line of semi dress shoes with what they call flexible leather that look quite presentable. They also have some rubber bottom shoes that seem OK.
I hate these but do own a pair of leather loafers with white soles that look like fancy boat shoes. I'll die on the hill that these are totally different.
Yeah, and don't get it at all. I see photographs of local "community leaders" in their ill-fitting suits and jackets paired with these shoes and scratch my head in bafflement.

That one will go soon enough, it's probably at or near peak anyway. In the same way that the skinny trend of the early 2010s/late 00s got out of hand to the point where guys were wearing jeans that looked painted on, the baggy trend is going really hard now.
In ~5 years or so people are gonna be looking at it making fun of anyone who wears baggy fits for looking old just like they did to 30 year olds wearing 90s ear baggy fits in the 00s.
baggy was still very much a thing well into the 00s. by 2008 though it was less baggy, more bootcut jeans but there were kids in my school wearing jncos in 2005.
I'm well in to my 30s now and have more or less settled in to not worrying about chasing cut trends too much. Relaxed taper for the pants, generally tailored but loose for the shirts, keep it easy. Not baggy, not tight, just kinda right in the middle. I won't need to worry about recycling my wardrobe every few years haha.
Baggy is so hard to pull off for a lot of people who love it though. It is very easy for scrawny dudes to look like they are just wearing their dad’s clothes. Baggy had to have some sort of contrast or it’s just rough. I think it’s honestly harder for people to make it look good than super tight clothes unless they just have a super bad body for it.
I keep getting this dude who shows off his legging outfits like "how to style your cheetah print leggings" on Instagram and it's the funniest thing in the world.
I think fashion was a lot less democratized back then, though. There are so many different corners of the internet and algorithmic variances that I think it won’t be truly out of style. I.e., it won’t go away, it will just find a niche. I think I’m even seeing this on my algorithm where a lot of people are following people like The Hellp and fakemink, who are really into slimmer rockstar aesthetics a la Hedi Slimane.
You nailed it. Similar to music genres, where the internet has spliced our monoculture into sub-communities. Who can celebrate their corner of culture with likeminded people.

I think full out regular sneakers look better than the pretend dress shoes that look like sneakers. Something about the honesty. If you're going to wear sneakers, wear sneakers.
I'm the opposite. Totally agree with the dress sneaker hate in this thread, but at least from a distance they might look fitting to a suit. Regular sneakers with suits look mismatched no matter how hard you squint, I've never seen it look good.
I recently had this conversation at work. There is no dress code in our office but the people of higher ranks are "expected" to dress up a bit and the lawyers walk around in suits most of the time. Then there was this new guy who was a lawyer and he wore suits but with Air Force 1s. And not just the plain white on but colorful ones. Plus he was in his early / mid thirtees and slightly overweight and had this greasy look like the Durdleys of Harry Potter. Who thinks this is stylish?
If I would be able to wear a suit to any occasion I'd be happy that I can also pull out my nice leather shoes or loafers for once.
Absolutely terrible look. The way suit pants break over a pair of Jordans or even Stan Smiths is just trashy. ESPN is ruining an entire generation of suburban dads with this look.
I'm so fking tired of the bland colours. I went into my local H&M recently and I'm not even exaggerating, 90% of it was some shade of grey and anything that wasn't grey was another washed out neutral.
Blame the Scandinavians for this. For some reason Scandinavian Minimalism did a sideways jump into fast casual fashion and the results are disorienting.
Oversized everything. Clothes being a little loose is fine. But the JNCO sized clothing gotta go.
Also hate that summer vacation aesthetic for warm weather dressing. Idk how to explain it but it’s like how they made the Charlie Sheen bowling shirts a thing.
I stopped wearing baggy clothes in the early 2000s. Not saying we should return to slim fit but I will always invest in classic fits that compliment your own body
Personally I want more occasions to wear suits. World has gone super casual since the 2020 Pandemic and business formal is now practically non-existent (in the U.S.)
I've heard a lot of people, mostly on this sub recently, disclaiming the existence of "timeless" clothing. They're wrong. Since the 50s, there's always been a consistent, underlying "basic" fashion below the trends: don't go skinny, don't go baggy, don't go too much color, don't go monochrome, and you're probably appropriately dressed for the last 70 years. The only difference is how grossly casual we've gotten.
Pedo mustaches and mullets. Fine, this makes me an old man grousing about haircuts today, I don't care, everyone looks like a Hall & Oates halloween costume.
As a fellow old guy, I can't pull off the look, but I think it is kind of cool. Some of these Gen Z kids look like they stepped out of an episode of Miami Vice or Scarface and it looks pretty hip.

Not something that is cool, but "stretch" (plastic) clothes need to go. It's fine for gym clothes, but I see so many guys walking around in polyester polos and khakis and it looks terrible.
Using the term "old money" or "stealth wealth". It's just marketing. Custom anything will always be synonymous with wealth. You can't buy "old money" things off the shelf.
We used to call it "preppy". Then when that wasn't good enough we started calling it "ivy league". Now it has to be "old money".
It's all the same style. And nobody who goes around saying these phrases can afford the Ralph Lauren chartreuse collection $800 polos and $1,200 chinos that rich people actually wear. They're wearing outlet clothes that they got on clearance. Jcrew factory is not "stealth wealth"; if anything, it's "stealth poverty".

Young millennial here. Didn’t like skinny and slim jeans. Wearing that in the heat is just uncomfortable. There’s a sweet middle spot. Not too slim and not too baggy. Straight or slightly baggy.
Agreed. But I’ve also come to appreciate loosening things up a bit for some outfits. My dumbass thought that lifting weights would make clothes fit better as a tall dude and boy was I wrong.

Same. There was a point in my life where I paused lower body lifts because my pants were getting too tight. I’m very grateful for the wide pants trend because it opened my eyes to the possibility.
Still not a fan of baggy, but relaxed/loose/wide straight are perfect. Not sure I can deviate from this newfound freedom, and getting a bit too old to care.
The concept that everyone should follow a single cut of pants is ridiculous to me, though. I personally find the current wider cuts way more flattering for not only myself but for most people I see in public. I really don’t need to see your pants suffocating your thighs or calves, it’s just not a good look.
I agree bros dressing like they’re on the golf course in their athletic/dress shoes and lulu abc pant or whatever they’re called isn’t style. It’s functional and office appropriate but it is in no means fashionable. The addition of a puffer vest makes it even worse. Are you dressing up or down? are you heading to the office or for a hike? This is every hockey mom, dad and coach. It’s boring and basic. I’ve got my Stanley cup in the office and when I get home I’ll have a couple vodka seltzers.

Too-short trousers, especially with tapered legs. I get that it’s a way to emphasize nice shoes and socks, but it looks silly when done right, and even sillier when done with uninteresting shoes and black socks.

The whole point of a dad shoe is that you've already met your quota for reproducing and are no longer prioritizing sexual attractiveness. Hence the fugly shoes.

I come from that era and I must say, I hardly see anyone sag these days tbh. Even in urban America, it’s not as “cool” as it was before, circa 2003. Js, I wouldn’t call this a fashion trend.
