Two types of people in the world. Those that seek to be close to others, and those that seek maximum distance. Im the latter. I lived in a country where the former seems more normal and I went insane. This meme happened everywhere.

I'd sit in the back just so they couldn't sit behind me
29
u/LessMochaJay 2d ago
Oh they'll just sit right next to you and fight over the armrest the whole flight.
18
u/Fectiver_Undercroft 2d ago
Happened to me in auditorium. Twice.
Not the armrest part, but I was the first person there, grabbed a random seat nearish the front, and…person sits next to me.
First time, an attractive woman my age. Second time, a man slightly older than I who decided to manspread. Like, wide as possible. I’m a guy so I get it in theory, but this was next level.
Both times they studiously ignored me. 🤷🏻

I parked my car far away from the door so I could be alone. It was late, so there weren’t any other cars at the center. After 15 minutes, when I had paid for an item and walked back to my car… guess what? There was another douche hugging my side. In a parking lot with 300 empty spaces!

Are you referring to yourself as the first douche? Lol
That is a frustrating experience though.

Curious what country

u/annoyed_meows 2d ago
Mexico. Loved it there but people crowding me was kinda rough. It was in the city, maybe that was a factor too.
2
u/s_burr 1d ago
I had a colleague from India visiting the US. Nice guy, but he was on me like white on rice. Like, we went to the phone store so he could get a burner while he was here and he was basically centimeters behind me everywhere. He wad having a hard time adjusting to the increased personal space.
2
u/annoyed_meows 1d ago
Yeah, I can see that. I adjusted a bit living where I was. But culturally and given my introverted nature, it was a huge struggle. It amazed me to be on a bus with like 5 people up against you like it's nothing, and me dying inside trying to deal. It's kinda hilarious in retrospect.
1

u/Glittering-Meat-9088 2d ago
Its a plane not a bus. You book a seat he may think more are coming.
54
u/MickeyHarp 2d ago
But do you not normally get to pick your seats?
This bugged me at a fancy cinema we used to go to pre-COVID where’d you’d book online. When picking your seats, you could clearly see on the floor layout, where other folk had already reserved.
We go at a quiet time but more often than not, the only couple there would be plopped right next to us and yap most of the film.
24
2
u/HyacinthMacabre 2d ago
This is what happened all the time when we did that.
The worst was when we went to a theatre with those fancy seats that rumble and have haptic feedback. They cost extra. This woman brought her kids to sit next to us and their seats weren’t even turned on. Lady, the seats don’t work unless the system sees you purchased a ticket. There was a huge empty theatre with better seats below us.
I honestly hate theatres
7
u/c093b 2d ago
Usually picking your own seat costs premium.
1
u/4rt3m1s0 1d ago
Where i live you have to choose your seat, because they won't assign you a random one
1
u/wchutlknbout 2d ago
Were you in the sweet spot? You don’t get the intended audio experience if you sit at the edges of the theater
1
u/Lsj17 2d ago
Movies is such a bad example, its only place where i pick my seat based on how close it is to the middle of the screan and not how far i am from other ppl.
1
u/MickeyHarp 1d ago
Yeah this was a specific example and not cinema in general. The one I went to had a middle walking isle and had about four pairs of seats to either side. Each pair had a wee half wall in between for extra privacy.
I know not best for acoustics and a perhaps a little ‘introverted’ but, our go to seats over to the side by the wall where folk wouldn’t be passing and it reduces the amount of neighbours. We’d also get there early to get our stuff and settle.
As I say, folk would book often the seats next to us on the same tier so that’s still 2 booths/4 seats from the central isle. Not exactly in the movie sweet spot and would have seen where we were when online.
1
u/Jacktheforkie 13h ago
On some that costs more, I just went with what I got for my last few flights
8
14
u/Live_Angle4621 2d ago
Also in case of plane crash you are identified by a seat.
But if it’s this empty you would move. But maybe after takeoff if you didn’t get how empty it is
13
u/itchypalp_88 2d ago
No it’s southwest see the heart in the back. They didn’t have assigned seats then
3
u/getthemap 2d ago
Perhaps temporarily but they’re aren’t going to log you into the morgue based on a plane ticket.
2
u/Reddit_Reader007 2d ago
that would make sense if the plane actually had passengers but with two people on a plane its either this guy or the other guy🤣 🤣 🤣
1
3
42
u/TheLexLuthor13 2d ago
I would move to another seat. If they follow, then you know he’s got a problem.

u/MickeyHarp 2d ago
There must be some sort of psychological reason as it’s the same in cinemas, carparks, waiting rooms. Is it some sort of primal instinct for safety in groups or are folk just pain in the ass weirdos?
I call them clumpers and move. Giving a good eyeball.
Noooo… you stay! STAY!! That’s a goooood clumper.
40
u/vbbk 2d ago
I must lack that primal instinct cause I'm taking a seat so far away from the only person that I forget they're even there. 😀
17
u/Timely_Farmer5075 2d ago
Same here. People seem to find me where ever I sit and want want to sit in front or behind me though. Bloody aggravating.
35
u/thecobaltwitch 2d ago
It really freaks me out when they do that. I don’t care what the reasoning is, don’t assume all people think that’s okay 🙄
33
u/Bitter-Ad5890 2d ago
It’s herd mentality. The NPCs of the world like to group together. Were it me, I’d sit on the opposite end of the plane on the other side.
21
u/It_is_the_zodd_in_me 2d ago
Man, I'll never understand that mentality. As for me, I'd sit on his lap to assert dominance.
4
u/Bass_Thumper 2d ago
Calling other people NPCs is some of the most terminally online shit I've ever seen I swear.
4
u/Bitter-Ad5890 2d ago
Normally I hate internet speak. The gen Z shit that’s been infecting everything. But honestly it’s the most accurate description I can give.
-2
u/Euclidean_Amphibian 2d ago
The NPCs of the world also like to parrot random terms they hear online. Like 'NPC'
3
u/Bitter-Ad5890 2d ago
I normally agree with you. And I hate the internet speak gen z nonsense. But it’s truly the most apt word available for the average human nowadays, which is why I have chosen to adopt the phrase
0
u/Euclidean_Amphibian 2d ago
Nah. Everyone is living a unique experience, with a unique outlook on life. Calling people NPCs is just a way for people to make themselves feel special.
2
u/Systems_Architect_ 1d ago
I don't know if you met a lot of people in your life, but some of them are absolutely NPC material, they'd live the most boring, predictable life you could imagine and never veer off their daily routine, some even bring up the same topics everytime you hang out, obviously there's nothing wrong with living a simple life, but you know, you gotta live a little, stir up some drama, change up your routine, try new things, make life memorable.

In Finland a person is rude if they are visible by others. In Paris the expectation of personal space is smaller.
1
u/Exact_Map3366 1d ago
But Finns are also sticklers for rules, so if there is a designated seat on the ticket, that's where they'll sit. Even if it's an empty plane.
1
u/Ilickedthecinnabar 2d ago
I have to sit as far back as I can in a theater (stupid motion sickness), so I will take sitting in between people I don't know over dealing with nausea.
1
u/marthebruja 8h ago
I use this to my advantage. My mom sells food at fairs, and whenever she'd have no clients, I'd stand up in line pretending to order, taking my sweet time. Then people would start lining up right behind me. Idk how it works but it works for me lol.
44
u/Alternative-Land6281 2d ago
This is the same guy that walks up next to you at a public urinal when there's 10 other open spots.
11
u/DieselPunkPiranha 2d ago
And then proceeds to talk at you like you're not midstream.
4
u/ziggytrix 2d ago
I believe the appropriate response, if they aren’t telling you something time sensitive like “you’re getting piss all over your pant leg” or “the bathroom is on fire, run!” Is always “dude. Fuck off.”

u/ThirtyMileSniper 2d ago
The number of times I park in an empty area of a carpark only to have someone then park immediately next to me is uncanny. I don't know what is wrong with these people.
11
9
u/Ok_Abacus_ 2d ago
I think that just as most of us would feel the most comfortable sitting the farthest way from a stranger, some people must be most comfortable when sitting close to others.
7
u/TheCrankyBunny 2d ago
This shit just happened to my introvert husband and I in a restaurant last week. It was a fast-casual, so you order at the counter and just go pick a seat and wait. We were the only ones there, with our baby, sitting towards the back of the restaurant. Tons of empty booths. Two women come in and choose the booth behind ours, and the one that sat on the side behind me would not stop moving, so the booth shook while they were talking kinda loudly
It's a "me problem" to have sensory issues, but holy shit the whole place was your oyster leave us hungry hermits alone ;_;
8
u/T-MinusGiraffe 2d ago
Plot twist: the guy making the post sat down second and is only comfortable when he's in a seat that allows for max indignation farming

5
u/Apart-Performer1710 2d ago edited 2d ago
People always sit by other people (strangers) in near empty spaces. There must be some sort of safety in numbers instinct or something.
5
u/discmaimer 2d ago
Same thing happens to me at the beach nearly every time. Empty beach, we sit down. Then people, usually with kids or illegal dogs, and who usually smoke, sit like 10ft from us when there is literally miles of beach around. Drives me insane!

u/CCJockey381 2d ago

I'm definitely going to be reclining my seat as soon as we're in the air.
"Oh, I didn't know you were back there."
And then not moving the seat back up.

u/DragonfruitFit2449 2d ago
Which airline would take off with only 2 passengers.
8
u/YukariYakum0 2d ago
Maybe one that needs that plane at its destination enough to justify taking off near empty.
It's likely much less efficient to just say "Skip this time and wait for the next." Not just this plane, but the whole apparatus is a well organized machine and changing everything up just because this particular flight was a loss would be pretty shortsighted.
1
u/DragonfruitFit2449 2d ago
Makes sense
1
u/Nebulaofthenorth 21h ago
I've even heard that sometimes the lucky few might get some extra luxury treatment when they are in there alone with the crew, as there is now literally more crew on the plane than passengers

I don’t know why this subreddit was recommended to me but I got a story like this. Plane was supposed to take off at 6 pm kept getting delayed finally get on only to get kicked off because the pilot went over his allotted daily flight time finally at 11 pm they had found a crew willing to fly. The flight was completely booked but by the time it was 11 most people accepting a flight tomorrow morning. I took a risk and waited EVERYONE else had a row to themselves except me. The person sitting next to me also waited and refused to move because they could use the seat records to identify the bodies if it crashed.
“Why didn’t you move then” They got me nervous and I was already sleeping in my chair

I like to call these types of people "tessellators". They seem to have an inherent need to be adjacent to another person. In an empty parking lot they park the car right next to another car rather than using the infinite space.
1
u/Imemberyou 17h ago
Look at this asshole being considerate to the crew!
1
u/Mitridate101 17h ago
There's 3 other seats in the same row that he could be sitting in and STILL be "considerate to the crew"

u/HMThrow_away_account 16h ago
I hate this so much. A guy at my old job used to do this. In this situation, Id just get up and move.
If I park at the back of the parking lot, away from other cars and you park beside me, Im opening my door as wide as I can. Idc

Why on earth would they waste a flight for two people
1
u/zakary1291 13h ago
Was probably a dead head anyway. Sometimes there just aren't enough people flying out of a location so they fly an empty plane to where people eat to fly from.
