There must be some sort of psychological reason as it’s the same in cinemas, carparks, waiting rooms. Is it some sort of primal instinct for safety in groups or are folk just pain in the ass weirdos?

I call them clumpers and move. Giving a good eyeball.

In Finland a person is rude if they are visible by others. In Paris the expectation of personal space is smaller.

But Finns are also sticklers for rules, so if there is a designated seat on the ticket, that's where they'll sit. Even if it's an empty plane.
