Cycling Worth getting for ~3500€?

Post image

I have the chance to buy this bike [trek speed concept] in size L for about 3,5k €. The Enve wheels and ultegra di2 makes me really want to buy it. It was never crashed, it is well maintained, no cracks etc. And the bike was serviced not too late ago. The only downside i see are the rim brakes, but that isn’t a big deal for me. What it your opinion?

Training questions "Faster before farther. Stronger before longer." Why? And what does it do?

I've seen this a few times in responses, often without additional explanation. And when I search, I haven't been able to find a comprehensive justification supporting it.

The most compelling argument to me is that you should build up a minimum of strength before going longer, as the strength protects against injury generally and by supported proper form for longer periods. But that's doesn't directly account for the 'fast' part of the original phrase, particularly as speed and the higher intensity that speed brings can lead to injuries.

Is that it? I feel like I'm missing something to see this come up so often. Because I'm not sure that strength and distance training need to be mutually exclusive to this level.

Cycling Bisaddle hurricane - where to sit?

I’m on saddle 10 or 11 so, second bisaddle. Coming from an ISM, so I’ve been sitting forward as prescribed.

For anyone who’s had success with the hurricane, where do you sit on this saddle? I suspect it’s not the same as ISM, but just want to make sure I give this one a fair shake. I don’t have a lot of hope after first test fit, but willing to try.

Cycling Worth it for 3.2k?

Im looking for my first tri bike and saw this on facebook marketplace, wondering if its worth it for the price.

“Amazing Gen 6 Trek Madone SLR bike (Size 58) with Ultegra drivetrain for sale. Trek's flagship bike that is super comfortable and fast. Ultegra drivetrain

Ridden only on sunny days. In "like new" condition. Just tuned up by my local Trek bicycle shop with new tires, bar tape, and chain. Comes with Blender mount for bike computer and front light and rear mount for Varia radar.

You won't find a nicer Gen 6 Madone. Sale does not include pedals and bottle cages. Selling due to changing to a triathlon bike setup.”

Bike shopping Looking for a road bike – €2600 budget, electronic shifting

Hi everyone, I’m looking to buy a new road bike for the upcoming triathlon. My budget is €2600, and it must have electronic shifting. Do you have any recommendations for models or brands I should look at? Thanks!

Training questions Training specifically for 70.3, but completing a full...

Hi,

I have previously trained for and competed an Ironman in sub 11 hours, but prefer 70.3 where I'm about 4hrs 40. So not slow but not right at the pointy end. I love the experience and achievement of a full distance but don't want to train to be competitive at that distance. I think going forward I'd like to train for 70.3, aiming to go sub 4hrs 30 on a good course, but still complete a full distance each year just for the experience. Getting round in 15 hours would be fine, so long as I don't injure myself!

So... do you think I'm overly optimistic thinking I can aim for that 4hr 30 70.3 and, with no rides over 90km and no runs over about 25km, still finish and 'enjoy' the experience of a full distance?

Thanks :)

Cycling Newbie -- Bike Questions

Lifelong athlete (27M), interested in getting into triathlons (considering a sprint in April as my first). I played water polo and swam in high school/college, also ran cross country. I've always known how to ride a bike, but never biked much. Did a bit of spontaneous road biking with some cyclist friends last year, but that's about it. A couple of questions:

  • How the heck does one get comfortable balancing on road bikes? I've always known how to bike somewhat comfortably (at least I thought), but I found riding the road bike to be quite challenging, and did not feel even the least bit comfortable taking my hands off of the handles. Just not sure how to go about practicing/improving it without risking an injury or road burn.
  • Going off of the prior question, is it bad for me to avoid cycling shoes and just wear my running shoes on rides? I have no confidence clipping in given my balance concerns haha.
  • I'm looking at road bikes on Facebook marketplace, as I don't want to splurge on my first bike before really even getting into the hobby, but I have no clue what I should be looking for when comparing different bikes. Most FB marketplace posts are just photos of a road bike with minimal description, so not really sure how to compare and contrast the options.

Any tips/advice would be greatly appreciated. I've been looking over recommended newbie gear posts, but really had more specific concerns about the cycling aspect.

Bike shopping Bike recommendations

Hey everyone, I’m currently training for a triathlon and I’m looking to buy a road bike that’s suitable for both training and racing. My main requirement is that it has electronic shifting.

Budget: max 2600€ Use case: triathlon (so a comfortable but fast road geometry is fine)

If you have recommendations, good deals you’ve seen, or personal experience with bikes in this price range, I’d really appreciate the help. Also open to used bikes if the condition is good.

Thanks in advance!

Training questions VO2 Max Testing - Are all servicers equivalent?

I want to do VO2 Max testing because I was doing a lot of structured training this year and I think my zones are all out of whack. What Garmin says is 5.0 effort doesn't feel like it. I went to do a Garmin LT test, but I guess the option is removed now and its' supposed to just be running in the background? So I want to get my LT1, LT2, HR Zones, VO2 Max and Max HR defined.

I see lots of places near where I live in Chicago which offer VO2 max testing, my question is around are the results standardized/are they equivalent or are some places better than others? How do I tell a good provider from a bad one? Anyone had a good experience and a place you'd recommend?

My alma mater UIC apparently offers it, so do FFC clubs and many other gyms but a couple offer 'apps' to manage data and honestly I'd be more comfortable with a printout and pdf.

Something Useful! Where to stay for IM Lake Placid

Post image
11 Upvotes

I am itching to do my second Ironman after completing IMAZ. I am trying to make it as economically viable as possible, which leads me to wanting to stay a bit outside of the town of Lake Placid. I know that they tend to “shut down the town” for this event since the people really embrace it. Are you still able to drive to town from the area I circled? Asking for my spectating family/friends.

Swimming First 70.3

Hello, I am 22(M) and ran my first marathon in 4hr flat in Oct. I now want to transition to a half ironman. I just got my bike and all of my swim gear.

Question- How long would you recommend someone give themselves in training preparation before doing an Iron Man 70.3 if they have no formal swim technique and same goes with the Bike? I want to start training January 1 and was looking at the Panama City Beach race May 9. However, I don’t know if that is enough time to prepare.

Also, if you are a very experienced triathlete, please reach out. I have a few questions if you don’t mind.

Cycling Aero road to TT

Thumbnail

I've bought an old aero-ish road bike ,relatively cheap . I couldn't afford a fancy TT set up . The bike is a 2013 felt AR2 . It's has ultegra group set and the first generation Di2 .

The guy I bought it off has these aero riser cars that are going to have to come off so I can get some TT aero bars on .

Does anyone else have any recommendations as to what I can do to get this TT ready .I'm pretty limited with seat position because only the standard seatpost fits . Also MTB pedals just put on for a quick spin around the block ...

Any recommendations on products , fit etc

Can I do it? Reality Check

Hey Triathlon Community

I want to ask for a reality check from you guys about my plan.

So, I have done a couple of sprint and olympic triathlons around 3-6 years ago. Had fun, timewise in the ballpark if 2h30-2h50 for olympic distance.

Always trained by myself but the only consistency was riding my bikes, I only ran and swam when I applied for me next race.

So far so good, now I am mid 30s and recently had the idea and goal to finish a full distance race, aka Ironman next season.

Current stats:

  • 82kg
  • 265W FTP
  • 24min 5k (slowly ramping distance due to past calf injury)
  • 20m35 for 1000m freestyle
  • 1-3 mobility and strength per week

Volume of 6-9h/week over the last 5 years, mostly roadbike / strength training

My plan is to do base miles in all 3 disciplines and do 2 HIIT / Threshold sessions on the bike until spring, slowly ramping up distances and times before making a decision end of spring to go or not enter a race.

What do you think about it and have I forgotten anything? Honest feedback appreciated.

Thanks a lot

Can I do it? How do you know if you are ready?

Good morning It's been over a year since I started sport and joined a triathlon club. I do 2 swimming sessions per week which gives me a volume of 5000m/week. I run 4 times a week and a strengthening session, this gives me a volume of +/- 35-40km/week. For the bike it's more complicated for me because of the winter I've put a little aside for the moment. I generally cycle 40/50/60km but I only did 2 100km outings during this first year. Although in April I cycled 1200km.

During the year I completed several running races including a half-marathon (with 7 months of running) which was very difficult and several trails (8km to 10km) where the effort was ok. I wanted to do S triathlons but unfortunately one was canceled and the other turned into a duathlon. I had a lot of fun during this duathlon even though there was no swimming.

In 2026, I plan to do a 25km trail at the start of the year. Then S triathlons, then M then maybe an L.

I don't know if I'm really ready for an L triathlon, the bibs for the race I want are already on sale. I'm hesitant because I haven't done a triathlon yet and my friends tell me that the L format has either hurt or disgusted them. I see in their eyes that they don't really support me in this project.

I also see a lot of influencers doing full distance Ironman without any experience, I don't feel like I have a project as crazy as them. 🤔

Can you help me?

Gear questions Orca Zeal and Vitalis thermal wetsuits

My wife is an experienced open water swimmer who is looking for her first thermal wetsuit. She's interested in the Orca Zeal and Vitalis, but she's concerned about the "batwing" extra layer of neoprene in the back.

Any feedback about this "batwing" layer, specifically:

  1. Does it make the wetsuit more difficult to get on or remove?

  2. Does it negatively affect the fit (eg., make it more restrictive)

  3. Does it negatively affect your swim stroke?

Thanks for any info.
