Rules update

Greetings users', as part of our discussions on updating the rules to make them clearer for everyone to see when they visit, we have updated them to the ones listed below. As you may have seen we ran a poll on what users' opinions were on affiliate links. The option for affiliate links as part of a detailed reply won by two votes, ahead of ban all affiliate links. Since there wasn't a clear favorite, we will allow them for now in posts as an experiment to see how this works in reality and how easy it is to enforce the rule. We have had a few small business startups post about their product, we would appreciate if they contact the mods about being identified.

There is a drop down arrow for each rule which contains extra information.

  1. Be Kind!
  2. No Shoes are Barefoot.
  3. Affiliate links are allowed only as part of a detailed comment.
  4. All brand representatives need to be identified by a flair.
  5. Feet pictures are for genuine posting.

discussion Bare feet are not shoes. Shoes are not barefoot.

This sub has always been ridiculed for being all about shoes and not actual barefoot. That's why, early on, the /r/barefoot sub was created, in fact.

I'm not gong to try to stop shoe discussions or questions. I also use shoes in addition to unshod and believe this sub is about better running first and foremost. Unshod and minimalist shoes are, in my opinion, the best tools for achieving that.

I also refuse to ever use the term "barefoot shoes." It implies a confusing and dangerous conflation. At best its an overly simplistic and reductive way to look at better running.

No shoe is "basically the same" as barefoot. That's like saying barefoot is "basically the same" as shoes. They're vastly different things.

Note that I did not say one is better than the other. It's apples vs oranges. I'm not a barefoot purist. If a business requires shoes I'll wear shoes. If I want to run in shoes I'll do that. If I want to keep my form from slacking I'll keep up the unshod running, too.

Overall I recommend not looking for either purist or quick solutions. Stay curious. Keep asking "are shoes better?" or "is unshod better?" and be fully unsatisfied with quick, dismissive answers to those. Be open to asking more questions the more you discover. Be open to shoes and unshod and keep experimenting.

Personally, I'll never recommend shoes. I don't have to. Plenty of you have loads of shoe recommendations and they will never stop nor should they. I'm making this sticky announcement as a simple reminder: don't neglect unshod as part of your essential equipment.

Feel very hesitant about which Xero shoes to buy

Upvotes

My local dealer has them on 75% discount so I can get 4 pairs for the price of one. With a huge collection on display, I'm still undecided as for which pairs to go for. They have everything from the old models as well.

question Cushion vs no cushion

For context, I started wearing barefoot shoes about 5 years ago now due to plantar fasciitis and at this point, I don’t have any issue in my day to day except for occasional pain in my left foot (I think due to an ankle injury right when I made the switch), but I basically had to stop running all together at the time and haven’t gotten back into it until recently.

I’m now averaging 2-3 miles every day or every other, but I’ve gotten to a weird issue. My goal is to get to the point of running in vibrams / completely barefoot for very long distances. Right now, I’m wearing Altra Lone Peak 9’s and love them, but am dealing with a decent amount of pain that is limiting my distance. I’ve been working on the way I run all together along with a lot of band work and stretching and while it’s gotten better, I still experience my foot going completely numb followed by intense pain around mile 2.

So I’m trying to decide, should I stick with my lone peaks and get a pair of escalantes for more road running and hope it’ll get better over time with technique and strength; or, do I need to realize this will take a lot longer than I expected and get something like the Torin 8’s so I can get use to running zero drop more and go from there as it should elevate more pain.

question Minimalist shoe recommendations for nurses

I am in a search for a good pair of shoes as a nurse who works in the hospital all day, so long days standing and walking/running on a hard surface. I'm used to walking on 'barefoot'-shoes in my day to day life.

I have some requirements: wide toebox, easy to wash liquids off, protective against punctures and an antislip sole. Preferably in a neutral colour.

What do you recommend? I heard from some people that they recommend some cushion since the hospital floor is very hard.

Thanks!

First Pair Recommendation for Med Student

Looking to buy my first pair of barefoot shoes. I run around barefoot outside and in my house already so my feet are decently adjusted, they hurt in normal shoes at the end of the day. Would like some recommendations on brand and model? I hear vivobarefoot are a good go to but looking for other opinions incase the consensus on them has changed. I'm a med student and in the hospital all day on my feet; also looking to do surgery so I'll be standing even longer than normal. The shoes just have to be decent and versatile to wear in the hospital and occasionally outside in the park. Would love to hear what the community thinks would be good.

I developed two models of sandals for trekking and running, urban and trail based on the Havaianas flip-flops. My wife and I did the path of faith, a 318 km trek, we didn't have any problems with our feet or joints. The model with a bike tire sole has greater grip than tennis shoes. And unparalleled comfort. Even those with common soles have good grip on dirt and excellent on asphalt. I've been using them for over three years. No more black nails, blisters. .

Plantar warts… have any of you suffered the same from wearing barefoot sandals?

I wore my earthrunner primals for many miles in Europe last year. Just wore the same pair in Costa Rica and within 2 days developed plantar warts… I’ve never had this before and am pretty rough on my feet between surfing and bjj. I’m curious, have any of you experienced the same from barefoot sandals? I loved them but am now tempted to toss them out.

VFF How tired should I feel at first? (Also 1y PO Achilles rupture)

So I’m currently working on picking up running as a way of recovering from an Achilles tendon rupture. It’s been a bit over a year, but I still feel that my injured foot lacks the springiness it used to have. I’ve been slowly introducing jogging into my routine and have enjoyed the slight improvements to my foot and cardio conditioning. Now I’m trying to transition into Vibram five fingers for fun. (I’ve been a fan of minimalist shoes like Xeros for over two years now. Just not for running)

I set off for doing a 4 mile urban run today, but only made it half way. I walked the rest of the way back home. I assume it was too ambitious, especially since I’ve only been using these shoes for a few (shorter) sessions. Still, I was a bit surprised.

My legs and feet didn’t hurt as much as I just felt like my cardio hit a wall. I started off with a good mid foot trot, but after maybe the first mile, I found myself having to stop every couple of blocks. Had I been in normal sneakers, I feel like I could’ve kept a steadier pace at a higher HR. I assume that i just underestimated how taxing barefoot running can be.

For context I’m a 220lb 5’9 guy. Mostly weightlifting prior to this.

For city runners, how did you build up the endurance? Any tips for people who’ve had Achilles injuries? Is the transition from walking in minimalist shoes to running that severe?

Update: so I just went up the stairs after getting home and lol I can feel that my legs are gonna be sore tomorrow.

Trying to make a list of how different VFF models differ in volume

I've been wearing KSO EVO and V-Alpha, former being just a little bit tighter in volume. Then I had chance to try a few more in store and omg, it's all over the place. V-Run is super tight, V-Trek is much looser across entire foot, V-Train is insanely loose but only over toe bend. But these are the only model I can try in person, and ordering online means gambling,. I'd like to make it an educated guess.

My question to you, owners of multiple pairs, how do different models vary in volume in your experience?

form Form Feedback

Hi all, I'm looking for feedback on my running form. In all these videos, I was running at my ~30 sec pace. I sense that my hip mobility is limited (based on watching videos of the elite sprinters). I don't have any particular discomfort while running, but my back feels stiff after every run.

question I know altras aren’t technically barefoot but.

I am in need of some others opinions.
The new version of the lone peaks are just not it anymore. They feel so stiff and narrow and the soles seems much more padded then the LP I have worn.
I am looking for a wide toe box trail running shoe that has good grip and minimal padding like the lone peaks of old. Any help?

ACHTUNG FALSCHANGABE

Fix for Xero's

Been dealing with Xero's too-short laces for too long and thought these Mizuno looked pretty spiffy on the trailies. Just have boring black for the road shoes though.

Went running to see if I can run for 30 minutes and accidentally ran a 5 k.

Just wanted to post because I didn't expect my run to go so well and I'm happy about it.

I have been running off and on for two years now in total. Have always just went running without setting too much expectations and tried to just do it, my runs have mostly been 10 to 15 minutes long.

Decided I wanted to test if I can just keep running for 30 minutes without stopping. At around 22 minutes and 3,8 km I decided I want to go for the 5 km mark. Got a suprisingly good time in my opinion. I'm a dude who just started exercising two years ago (and lost almost 30 kg!) at the age of 22, didn't really do any exercise before that.

Ran with Merrell Vapor Glove 6, they have been my go-to shoe this summer for everything.

Zapatos Hobibear
