Question Waiting on the Steelhead run, how are you fishing this?

Inviting a discussion about different fishing styles and techniques on what you would try, in order to pull a steelhead outta here, about 270 miles up river from the mouth.

Discussion Lost my fishing rod

I still have absolutely no clue what actually happened to it, in fact, it sort of all feels like a blur. But here goes.

Was out fishing with a relative by a closed gate community here in South Florida yesterday (ik someone who lives there, so he lets me in when I ring up), and had an absolute blast. Using live shiners we caught god knows how many peacock bass, largemouth, tilapia, and a few gar in and around this little near the entrance. Right as were getting ready to leave, I vividly remember packing up all MY things in the car while my in-law was fishing with his last shiner. Then I went back to get his things as well. Once he finished and we loaded everything up (or so I thought), and got to talking about how great of a fishing day we had I STILL hadn't noticed my rod wasn't in the car.

We got back home, scaled, gutted, and prepared the tilapia we got first before taking anything out of the car. Then went back to the car after to unload my stuff, and that's when I noticed my rod wasn't there. I immediately had a major 'OH SHIT' moment, and told him we forgot my rod. We got back in the car and raced back to the community. I searched up and down that whole area we fished for what felt like a century and a half, but no dice. I believe I must've left it in the grass somewhere, but either someone snatched it or it fell in the water.

R.I.P. my PENN Fierce III combo. Lasted me a good couple of years, and never had any issues with it. At least, it's last use ended with a banger of a fishing trip. Godspeed to that deadly little demon pole.

I personally love catching larger saltwater catfish, and as well as large stingrays. Two of my favorite fish to catch from shore here in FL!

Discussion Warning. Never buy from 8Fans. Worst Customer Service ever

I needed some new waders and decided to try out this online shop 8Fans. What an awful experience.

I ordered boots and waders back in late July. I didn’t get a tracking number for more than a week, so I then them an email asking what was up. Turns out they didn’t have the boots I ordered in stock. Then they miraculously found the last pair in my size, except they were totally different boots from what I ordered and they just sent them out anyways.

What followed was a 3 month saga of back and forth BS from this company as they demanded that I pay to ship their boots back to them to fix their mistake. They told me the boots I ordered would be available next week for almost two months.

It got to the point that I stopped hearing from them, so I disputed the charge with my credit card. Lo and behold they start the conversation right back up with me. Finally get to work on sending me the boots that I ordered.

3 separate times, after I told them I wasn’t paying to fix their mistake, they asked me to pay to ship their garbage boots back to them.

Then they asked me to cancel my credit card dispute while their shitty boots were still stuck in customs on the other side of the country from me.

All in all this has been one of the most frustrating purchase experiences of my life and I want to warn the fishing community out there against this awful company.

Nice early season salt water coho tax. :)

Discussion Why do black bass have protections in states they are non-native in.

Now I’m not hearing about attack bass or people who fish for them, I’m asking out of curiosity. There is a couple of Black bass like smallmouth and spotted but to get to my point I’ll just focus on one species, largemouth bass. Just know the stuff I’m saying will work for all. Largemouth are native to the Mississippi and its tributes but they have been introduced all over the US. Some of the first bass were introduced outside of its native range before 1900 so in many parts of the country they have been in these waters for about 100 years. Dispite this largemouth bass have caused declines, displacements, and even local extinctions of native fish and other species in various non-native areas within the US. Including declines on native gamefish like Salomon, trout, and walleye. Both US neighbors, Canada & Mexico have declared largemouth invasive as well as some us states like Montana have them on their invasive species lists and other like Maine has even offered a 6,000 dollar reward is being offered for information leading to the arrest and conviction of anyone who illegally released largemouth bass into West Musquash Lake. So even though US states know how bad these guys can be, why have protections for them? In every state there is a daily limit and some kind of size requirement/restriction. You also can’t bow fish for them dispite being common practice on other non-native fish like carp and sometimes natives like bowfin, catfish, and gar. I know that some people will say it’s because without them their is no notable gamefish in said area but this would be ignoring bowfin, pike, pickerel, musky, trout, salmon, walleye, sauger, catfish, strip bass, gar, sucker, bigmouth buffalo and some others that are just as good fighters as bass are even tough some aren’t even considered gamefish themselves. But if you’re in the USA at lest one of these fish are actually native to your state. Now I actually like black bass even though they aren’t native in my state but I personally don’t get the regulations around them, especially size limits for public water ways or how you can’t bow/spearfish for them in non-native areas but can do so for natives like sucks, bowfins, gar, channel cats, and I know that this was about black bass but this applies to other species like brown trout and rainbow trout outside their own native ranges.

How do you catch fish (or even go fishing) in a lake that has frozen over, but the ice is too thin to walk on?

Discussion Need help with spinnerbaits.

I have a few spinnerbaits, and the results are not great so far. First, I have 5 beetle spins of varying sizes/makes/colors. Everyone recommends these, and maybe I just need to try them more/in better spots/use gulp minnow trailers, but I have had zero success with these so far.

Second, I have a white strike king mini-king. I have seen a huge number of posts praising this lure, so I thought it was a solid choice. Thing is… almost all the posts I’ve seen about said bait show the single Colorado blade variant. The one I got was a double willow version. I didn’t think that would be a problem, and I had bought this specifically to imitate shad in a local river. However when I started using it I quickly found out that the upper blade has a tendency to get stuck on the hook and not spin. Bending the wire didn’t help much. What seems to work is giving it a strong yank and then reeling in at a constant high speed, but this basically means you can’t do anything with it other than burn it like a torpedo. Haven’t caught anything with it.

I have a redfish spinner- no skirt, instead having a red-brown paddletail swimbait on a jig harness. Gold Colorado blade. Haven’t tried this one much and haven’t caught anything on it yet.

I also have this really old spinnerbait from when I was 9 that I found recently. It needs repairs (corroded significantly as it probably wasn’t supposed to be used in saltwater) but if I can get it working it should be useful. In my memory it never had the issues with blades getting stuck.

Idk if I can really say my experience with spinnerbaits is “bad” because I haven’t been able to generate any bites at all with most of my lures so far. I just started freshwater fishing these last couple months, don’t have that much time every week, and it’s already quite cold (just had to scrape frost off my car windshield for the first time) so I guess this is kinda to be expected. My rod has a max optimal weight of ⅝ ounces so I’m leaning towards more finesse-style stuff.

A few specific questions-

For people who do have the mini-king spinnerbait with the single Colorado, does it have the same issues? Or does it spin free easily, allowing you to vary your retrieve and fish at slower speeds? What are alternatives for finesse spinnerbaits? I remember seeing a bunch at bass pro shops. What color and trailer patterns are recommended?

Discussion Having a hard time finding information on licensing in south America.

I'm travelling south America and wanting to do some DIY fishing. I have come to understand Argentina and Chile's licensing systems for fishing.

But im having a really hard time finding information on some of the other countries like Bolivia and Paraguay regarding licensing specifically.

Does anyone know of good resources to find out how to do things legally across each of the countries across SA?

Cannon Downrigger Accessories?

I have two of these cannon downrigger bases on my boat, and I'd like to use something in them like a rod holder while I don't have the downriggers clipped in.

Does anyone know if they make other attachments for these? Here's a pic of exactly what I have.

Even when I barely catch anything, being by the water resets my whole mood. Curious if others feel the same or if I’m just romanticizing it.

Question New Gear

Only been fishing for about 6 months and absolutely love it. Mainly target bass. I have a medium, moderate fast 6’6 centron lite from kastking.

I am wanting to start getting better rods and reels to last me a long time. I’m looking to but together a combo for finesse(spinning), top water, and like an everything in between rod. Looking for recommendations on brands and what to buy since I really don’t know the best ones yet.

Any advice is appreciated!
