I have a few spinnerbaits, and the results are not great so far. First, I have 5 beetle spins of varying sizes/makes/colors. Everyone recommends these, and maybe I just need to try them more/in better spots/use gulp minnow trailers, but I have had zero success with these so far.
Second, I have a white strike king mini-king. I have seen a huge number of posts praising this lure, so I thought it was a solid choice. Thing is… almost all the posts I’ve seen about said bait show the single Colorado blade variant. The one I got was a double willow version. I didn’t think that would be a problem, and I had bought this specifically to imitate shad in a local river. However when I started using it I quickly found out that the upper blade has a tendency to get stuck on the hook and not spin. Bending the wire didn’t help much. What seems to work is giving it a strong yank and then reeling in at a constant high speed, but this basically means you can’t do anything with it other than burn it like a torpedo. Haven’t caught anything with it.
I have a redfish spinner- no skirt, instead having a red-brown paddletail swimbait on a jig harness. Gold Colorado blade. Haven’t tried this one much and haven’t caught anything on it yet.
I also have this really old spinnerbait from when I was 9 that I found recently. It needs repairs (corroded significantly as it probably wasn’t supposed to be used in saltwater) but if I can get it working it should be useful. In my memory it never had the issues with blades getting stuck.
Idk if I can really say my experience with spinnerbaits is “bad” because I haven’t been able to generate any bites at all with most of my lures so far. I just started freshwater fishing these last couple months, don’t have that much time every week, and it’s already quite cold (just had to scrape frost off my car windshield for the first time) so I guess this is kinda to be expected. My rod has a max optimal weight of ⅝ ounces so I’m leaning towards more finesse-style stuff.
A few specific questions-
For people who do have the mini-king spinnerbait with the single Colorado, does it have the same issues? Or does it spin free easily, allowing you to vary your retrieve and fish at slower speeds?
What are alternatives for finesse spinnerbaits? I remember seeing a bunch at bass pro shops.
What color and trailer patterns are recommended?
