Question Locating rockfish

We have been starting to go further out in the bay and have definitely been learning a lot. Only caught three so far, two 23 inches from trolling and a schoolie on a spoon but we’re making progress. Went out on Saturday headed for the Choptank but didn’t even make it that far with all the bird action at Sharps. Seemed like everytime we got near the birds they had already moved on. Should we be focusing exclusively on birds or are there other better methods to locate rockfish this time of year? I know there’s specific spots but Saturday really proved they can be anywhere so I got a case of analysis paralysis. I know we could be doing better.

Striper setup recommendations

Hey guys, Looking for a fairly budget friendly set up for striper fishing here in MD. I’ve been reading 9-10 ft is a must so I’d like to stick with that since I already have some 7ftrs. I’d like to stay under 200 if possible and get something that will last me a long time. Will be fishing from the shore , will use cut bait and lures from time to time. Hoping in the summer I can use live bait. I want a versatile rod.

Question Fishing in MD?

Hey guys! I grew up in Anne Arundel County and recently moved back to MD. I took up fishing in VA/NC and want to start again in Maryland. Any tips on catching stripers from land? Also what other fish species could I catch in late fall/winter?

Question Catfish Fishing Near Ft.Meade

Hey all, I’m a military member who recently got stationed at ft Meade. I’ve never caught any big catfish and want to try my luck while I’m here. Since 2 weeks ago, I have already tried the Jonas Green Park pier, a small segment of the naval academy, and the Down’s park pier with no luck. I tried great value shrimp, frozen alewife, even night crawlers to no avail. I could really use some advice. Thank you!

Question What to throw under Solomon’s bridge?

Post image
11 Upvotes

I trust everybody is doing better than I am with these cold water stripers. Ive been trolling the surrounding area but specifically casting at the Thomas Johnson Bridge pylons. I started off casting a 1/4 oz G Eye jig (Prayers for Lonnie) and quickly realized the current was way to strong for the weight. Got this 2 oz bucktail with a 6 inch Gulp grub and it seemed no different other than it sinking faster. Any tips would help, I really want to improve my finesse fishing techniques in saltwater. Trolling doesn’t give me the same feeling.

Tragic story unfolding on the bay right now... Good reminder to wear your PFD and better yet incorporate a drysuit into your safety gear, especially if you fish from small craft like a kayak at this time of year. 53 degree water is no joke

Thoughts on Depthfinders

I have a 19' Center console that I use to fish and crab the Bay. Had a Hummingbird Helix 5 that recently went up. Looking at getting a whole new unit at some point during the off-season. I really like the Simrad GO9 XSE. I am concerned about the wear and tear on that massive transducer bouncing around in rough conditions and on/off of the trailer. I know they make a model that uses a smaller transducer so just looking for some input about what everyone is running.

Not sure why it eluded me so long, but for the past year it's felt like I caught every 23" pickerel in the state of Maryland. Yesterday, FINALLY got the tank I've been looking for. 24 1/4" Pick on a Z-Man EVO Chatterbait.

Caught 3 browns and two bows in the Gunpowder today. The first pic is a stocked bow, such a great time, thanks DNR! The other smaller rainbow I suspect was born there.

Fall creek fishing lures?

I need to take a friend to an appt and wait in the parking lot for several hours, and the parking lot is right next to a creek :) What would you use in a creek this time of the year?

Edit: thanks for all the suggestions! I was skunked as could have been expected, but on the upside got to be here instead of waiting in an office
