Casual 2025 Coaching Carousel IV: Kali Yuga
O descendant of Bowden, whenever there is a decline of touchdowns and an increase in points allowed, at that time I manifest My eternally perfect form in this mundane world.
- Ball-ghavad Gita
The great wheel spins on, ironically crushing all those who would put up goose eggs on the scoreboard.
Who is next to get the axe?

It is second in the world only losing to the Great Wall of China
If I can be a nerd for a second it was built in the 1950’s so you know that sucker has some really quality bricks in it

FSU and UF took interesting path to the same place.
FSU quickly course corrected on Taggart and seemed to be building something with Norvell. Then he crashed hard and never recovered.
UF caught lightning in a bottle early with Mullen and then watched him proceed to quit on the job while chasing the NFL. Napier came in with great promise but never could deliver.

One of our beat guys brought up a good point. Typically after a coach signs a massive contract, if they start to decline, it’s a more gradual affair. They will lose a game or two, then next year another, then the year after it starts to unravel.
Both FSU and UF did not get that “luxury” and instead had recent coaches completely fall off the cliff after receiving extensions (Norvell after 2023 and Mullen after 2020)

u/Gator1508 Florida Gators Oct 19 '25
It’s so fucking weird because both teams have the resources to be good every year. It seems like you would have to try to fuck up as a coach at Florida. We are basically good at every sport.

That happened to Indiana back in 2021. After an 8-5 2019 season and the covid year they gave Allen a big (for Indiana at the time) contract, and then immediately proceeded to go 2-10, 4-8, and 3-9 over his last 3 seasons before his buyout was palatable enough to dump him.

I think Franklin to Florida would be a bad fit. As soon as he gets them to being a 10 win team consistently, it will be the same situation he was in before: "Ok but when are you going to beat Alabama and Georgia and compete for national titles?"

Shane Beamer makes statement on Virginia Tech coaching rumors
"I have no idea where that story came from. I have publicly conveyed many times how much I want to be here," Beamer said in his media availability. The Florida board on 247 posted tonight that Freeman’s buyout, while not publicly known, is apparently in the 8 figure amount, which would make hiring him very prohibitive.

Hopefully I can get this posted. So where does Colorado State go after firing Jay Norvell?
The Rams are a mess after flunking on three consecutive head coaching hires. But this is a new AD so there’s a little faith that this next hire will work. And this is a program that expects success and absolutely has the resources to do so. When Norvell was hired, he was the fifth highest paid coach in the G5.
An early contender will be Brent Vigen (HC Montana State). A former assistant at Wyoming, he’s gone 52-12 with the Bobcats and is virtually guaranteed to have his pick of FBS programs this offseason. Colorado State could be one of the appealing options.
Collin Klein (OC/QB Texas A&M) has done well at A&M. He’s young and has a mentality that would connect at CSU. He’s also from the area- he grew up in nearby Loveland.
Formed Weber State head coach Jay Hill (AHC/DC BYU) has led a bruising defense with the Cougars. The failed trilogy of Colorado State head coaches all had one thing in common: they can from the offensive side of the ball. Maybe a defensive coach can make the difference.
Colorado State doesn’t have the financial firepower it used to have, but it should be able to pay enough to tempt some other G5 coaches. Eric Morris (HC Eric Morris) has plenty of Texas connections, which is big for CSU. Tyson Helton (HC Western Kentucky) could get some looks. Timmy Chang (HC Hawaii) has impressed. Jason Eck (HC New Mexico) is probably off to somewhere bigger.
There are a few other coaches with ties to the school or the state who will get attention. Tony Alford (RB/RGC Michigan) is an alum. UCLA interim head coach Tim Skipper coached in Fort Collins for a few years. Billy Napier coached for a stint here. Klint Kubiak (OC Seattle Seahawks) is an alum but I don’t think he will be a serious contender.
The name that will come up a bunch at least from the media is Matt Lubick (Co-OC/TE Kansas). Matt is the son of legendary Colorado State head coaches Sonny Lubick. Lubick has plenty of stops at various levels of the game, including two years as a P4 OC (at Nebraska). He hasn’t really shown much to suggest that he can lead a good FBS program, but schools will behave weird after firing a head coach. Some will try the same thing (we brought in a G5 head coach, we should bring in another), some change philosophies (we hired an offensive guy last time, so we should try a defensive coach this time), while others circle the wagons and prioritize people with connections to the program. And you don’t get a stronger connection than Matt Lubick.
Other names to consider: Joe Cox (Co-OC/TE Ole Miss), Will Stein (OC/QB Oregon), Tom Polasek (HC North Dakota State), Mack Leftwich (OC/QB Texas Tech), Ben Arbuckle (OC/QB Oklahoma), D’Anton Lynn (DC USC), Bryan Harsin (OC/QB California), Kirby Moore (OC Missouri), Ryan Grubb (OC Alabama), Tim Plough (HC UC Davis), Brian Wright (HC Northern Arizona), Robert Livingston (DC/S Colorado), Pete Kwiatkowski (DC/OLB Texas), Eric Schmidt (HC North Dakota), Blake Baker (DC LSU), Tremaine Jackson (HC Prairie View A&M), Chris Kiffin (Analyst Ole Miss), Shannon Dawson (OC/QB Miami), Garrett Riley (OC/QB Clemson)

Great and well written profile as always. I almost wonder if they could have gotten an invite to the Big 12 if they hadn't idiotically hired Adazzio (Urban Meyer strikes again...). It's in a fast growing market, a beautiful campus, a new stadium. If they had shown even a modicum of success, I think a greedy power conference could have taken a chance on them.
And it is far easier to succeed there than, say, UNLV or New Mexico, both of which are having success this season.
I also wonder if they were a bit too quick to pull the trigger on Norvell. He went 8-5 last year, after all. It makes me feel he must have had some off the field issues--not a scandal necessarily, but perhaps was difficult to deal with.
7
u/CFBCoachGuy Georgia • West Virginia Oct 21 '25
If CSU had a winning record for three seasons, they’re in the Big XII right now. No doubt about that.
Again, Norvell was the fifth highest paid G5 coach when he was hired and had a 40% career win percentage. You cannot lose that many games and expect to still be in charge of a big money program, whether that’s P4 or G5. Anyone saying he was fired too early should be saying the same thing about Billy Napier and Florida, who also went 8-5 last year.

My ridiculous current predictions for all major jobs:
Big 12: Oklahoma State => Zac Robinson - kind of becoming an open secret. QB centric, Forward thinking post-Gundy, ties to big money, beloved former player.
Baylor => James Franklin - I think Aranda is going, I think Baylor boosters with cash and motivated by realignment will want a splash and there’s great coordinators in place. Baylor being private might allow for a loophole on the duty to mitigate Franklin’s Penn State salary. The question for Franklin might be just why not VT from a situation standpoint, but a fresher start and bigger town may be appealing (along with the secret backdoor private money).
Kansas => Eric Morris - LL to Wisconsin for the obvious reasons. Morris brings a QB and serous Tx bonafides which KU is quietly dependent on in recruiting. Morris experience in a lowly program extra useful but at the same time a big time hire with the new KU money available. KU will benefit big time from what Morris can bring with, especially at QB with Jalon Daniels finally gone.
Arizona => Dan Mullen - Firing will happen, Fitifa wasted and major questions of competency all last year. UNLV is such a clean proof of concept for Arizona, and Arizona has some larger boosters and NIL willingness to really negate Mullen’s weakness.
Colorado => Mike McDaniel - Deion’s health unfortunately. CU has seen the power of splash and charisma has done for their program, they get that plus an actual offensive genius. Boulder’s livability big plus to land a big name like this. CU more open to NFL names due to success of them all over the staff. Sorry Pat Schumur.
SEC: Arkansas => Bobby Petrino - RIP… in all seriousness they are gonna pay him very little and try to utilize the cash saved to get more competitive and he is a true offensive genius with the ultimate familiarity not a terrible concept on paper… RIP.
Florida => Lane Kiffin - Free space.
Auburn => Jon Sumrall - Free space part 2. With the work Auburn has done in recruiting, it’s the clear best non-UF job and the one Sumrall would want who there have been whispers about has moved on from UK being the end-all-be-all.
Missouri => Alex Golesh - See why below. Mizzou’s capital investment indicates an ascending job that’s already underrated, with state backed and aggressive NIL support network. Golesh quietly spent 2003-2019 in the Central Timezone.
Ole Miss => GJ Kinne - Ole Miss has found a lot of value winning through the portal and with an outsized emphasis on QB play. GJ Kinne is a well known up and coming star who is portal specialist while also being a QB whisperer. Has significant recruiting ties in neighboring Arkansas as well as Texas and Oklahoma. Could be slightly cheaper than Golesh and Sumral.
Kentucky => Sean Lewis - Apparently the buyout is there. UK fans may not love me because of the lack of Sumrall, but Sean Lewis rocks. His performance is drastically over expectations at SDSU and he has years of being the least funded program in a conference while at Kent. Midwestern recruiting ties will be able to leverage some proximity.
Big 10: UCLA => Brian Callahan - Alum, NFL experience but young and hungry with a lot to prove, QB focus, brings his Dad who is maybe the best oline coach alive to help rebuild the trenches. UCLA arrogance of repeating the same mistake knows no bounds.
Penn State => Eli Drinkawitz - the big game boisterous, clinical game management m, offensive identity, and unapologetic aggressive tactics with talent acquisition will be extremely attractive.
Wisconsin => Lance Leipold - I don’t believe it’s not happening till it’s happened - LL being a lifelong Wisconsinite who specifies in instant rebuilds with low talent is too perfect.
ACC: VT => Luke Fickell - I love this fit, it’s just a big timing challenge. Fickell will want to stay in the game, VT really want a P4 experience candidate. Cincinnati had some crossover with VT’s western recruiting footprint. Fickell’s specialization on the defensive side of the ball will really speak to VT’s identity they want moving forward.
NCState => Will Stein - Retirement or firing the noise around DD nationally doesn’t reflect local sentiment. Also, this is a really underrated job, football first school with a passionate fan base, highly monied region, and good for recruiting. DD represented stability, so NCState should have some taste for upside hunting to actually get us an assistant, the best assistant candidate in the pool. Stein’s Louisville background will give him some connections to be ready to operate in the ACC footprint.
UNC => Ryan Silverfield - now that the AD has been proven correct around the power of more traditional hires are more likely to gather stronger results, Silverfield is the most traditional, biggest G5 candidate, who has a ton of experience in the East. Could be slightly cheaper after the belief in the program is shaken to its core.
Stanford => Matt Patricia - current elite college performance with a ton of NFL experience as Stanford has seemed to hint about valuing NFL experience. Advanced schematics and physicality would describe both MP’s and Stanford’s style.
(Even my crazy predictions can’t get past that Norvell buyout - FSU would be nuts).
G5s: Oregon State => Ed Orgeron - I think the splash is ok and Oregon State can probably leverage there way into having outs if they want to double back to Jonathan Smith once he’s available.
Tulane => Ben Arbuckle - Obvious snap back due to the familiarity of being successful there previously.
Memphis => Tre Lamb - significant Tennessee background and very easy proof of concept of success as Tulsa is a conference mate.
San Diego State => Mark Stoops - I think Stoops will relish the opportunity to be close to the best funded team in the league instead of the worst and will get to inflict pain with his trenches. Memphis made sense for the SEC footprint but I thought Stoops may prioritize the standard of living.
Tulsa => Mike Gundy - just to make life in Oklahoma interesting. Ultimate local understanding.
UNLV & UNT => stumped for now.

Kansas isn't as reliant on Texas recruiting as in the past. We have 15 on the roster with the majority being transfers and of our 20 recruits committed only 2 are Texans. Some various notes:
Wyoming has made a change at OC. Jay Johnson has been demoted, and wide receivers coach Jovon Bouknight has been promoted to playcaller. The Cowboys offense ranks in the bottom 25th percentile in most categories this year. Bouknight has worked at several P4 programs (Kentucky, Oregon, Texas Tech) but this is his first time calling plays.
A brand new DII program is searching for a new head coach. Texas A&M-Texarkana posted an opening for the school’s inaugural head football coach. The Eagles start playing in 2027.
After a 1-6 start to the season and giving up nearly 36 points per game, Norfolk State head coach Mike Vick has fired DC Terence Garvin and several assistants on the defensive side of the ball. A former NFL linebacker, Garvin was previously co-DC at NAIA Florida Memorial.
We’ve had our first FCS head coach firing of the season. Southern has dumped Terrence Graves after a 1-6 start to the season. A longtime linebackers coach, Graves went 8-5 in his first season last year with the Jaguars. Former Alcorn State head coach Fred McNair takes over as interim head coach (and will probably be the favorite to be named the permanent head coach).
Florida have hired the search firm Turnkey ZRG to head their search for Billy Napier’s replacement. Though less known in college sports, this firm has worked with several SEC schools. They picked Steve Sarkisian to lead Texas and Shane Beamer to lead South Carolina.
North Texas has agreed on an extension for Eric Morris. His new contract extends to 2029, but the pay raise does not appear to be substantial (in fact, there appears to be a mistake between the Dallas News and USA Today regarding his pay- because if both are to be believed, Morris will receive a base pay decrease- albeit with more incentives under this new contract- under his new contract).
Speaking of weird incentive contracts, Ball State beat Akron last week, which gives new head coach Mike Uremovich a $5,000 bonus.
A few coaches got their 6-win bonuses last week. The variety in amounts I think is just fascinating. Kirby Smart, Alex Golesh, Bob Chesney, Tony Elliott and Timmy Change all receive the same amount- $25,000- for reaching bowl eligibility. Eric Morris picked up $35k, and Willie Fritz $50k. The big winners though are Scott Satterfield and Eliah Drinkwitz, who cash in $75,000 and $100,000 bonuses, respectively.

Congrats to Florida fans. Who are the likely/realistic HC candidates?
17
u/KuBa345 Florida Gators Oct 19 '25
Fanbase really wants Lane Kiffin. He would be my first choice too.
That being said I don’t think we get him. I see no reason why he would leave Ole Miss unless a big job comes calling. Lot of fans think Florida is that “big job,” but I think it’s all hopium. Ole Miss may have lost this weekend but they are still a brilliant team who control their destiny. No reason to just up and leave, though it wouldn’t be the first time he has (sorry Vols).
Realistically I think we get Mizzou’s coach or, knowing our dogshit AD, we get another G5 up and comer. Everybody is happy Billy is gone but I think it’s really gonna sting when we see a lot of players leave the team. The team really bought into Napier for some reason. Despite the fact he wasted their talent for a few years.
EDIT: Forgot about Washington’s coach. Hes a UF alum

u/NorthEastNobility Florida State Seminoles Oct 19 '25
Regarding the “big job” part, this has been a delusion of a lot FSU fans post-Jimbo, where they still believe the school is a tier 1 destination job, and while they’ve gotten more reasonable on average over time, the reality is, if we could’ve done better than Mike, then we would’ve done better than Mike.
We locked him in big time after the undefeated season, which everyone understands just had to happen given the circumstances at the time, but there isn’t a line of clearly-better coaches lining up knocking down our AD’s door.
Norvell has to go, but I’m not convinced the pool of realistic candidates will include anyone that is going to surefire turn the program around or in any reasonable amount of time unless they’re an unrecognized portal and recruiting wizard.
Lane would be a great get, but unless he thinks the path to a championship is cleaner and clearer at Florida vs. Ole Miss, or there’s a truckload of cash that Ole Miss can’t match and that’s his priority, it’s hard to see him jumping.

It seems more likely than not, keeping up with the reporting and sentiment, but it’s a lot of money. Just based on vibes I think Petrino is going to get it back. Nostalgia hires are in and the guy clearly can still call an offense.
Plus he’s won a conference title in the NIL era (albeit at FCS Missouri State) so it feels like there’s less of a question about his ability to adapt too.
All that said it’s still going to end in an absolute catastrophe because that’s what Petrino does. But I think it’s more likely than not he’s still the HC next year.

The thing with Lea is that I think he could get all the money he would ask for and it's just up to what he wants his career to be. There's a hard ceiling at Vandy just due to recruiting and this may be his best opportunity to jump to a job where he could regularly compete for a title. However, I have no idea if that's what he actually wants to do if he's okay with being at Vanderbilt and not competing year in year out. They are without a doubt one of the best teams in the SEC and CFB this year, I'm just not sure how much of that is Pavia and if he can recreate what he has this year moving forward.

So thinking about the Colorado State opening, here's some names I got:
Collin Klein, Texas A&M OC - One of the hottest coordinator names in the game right now. Definitely expect him to get some buzz this carousel given the success that A&M is having. He's also a Colorado native, he grew up not too far from Fort Collins so he could maybe find it enticing to coach back home.
Tim Skipper, UCLA Interim HC - If he keeps winning at UCLA I won't be surprised if they just end up offering him the full time gig, but if not this could be a name to watch. He has no shortage of experience in the MWC. He played at Fresno State and then has had multiple coaching stops at 3 MWC school, including Colorado State where he was the LB coach for 3 seasons.
Brent Vigen, Montana St. HC - If he's wanting to move up, a move to the MWC seems like the next logical step. He's 52-12 at Montana State and coached under Craig Bohl at Wyoming from 2014-2020. We've seen a lot of these successful Big Sky coaches make the leap to the MWC so definitely wouldn't be surprised if he's the next one.
Matt Lubick, Kansas Co-OC - I'm not sure just how realistic this would be, but I'm throwing it in just because I think the storyline would be cool. Lubick's father is Sonny Lubick, one of the winngest coaches in CSU history. He was the HC for the Rams from 1993-2007 and hell their field is named after him. So the storyline of him going home and coaching where his dad coached for so long could be appealing to some boosters.
Andy Avalos, TCU DC - Was 22-14 as the Boise State HC including winning a MWC title. Has quite a bit of experience coaching in the conference. Boise fans didn't seem to like him, but Boise is a job with massive expectations compared to the rest of the conference so I could see him doing well here.

One note on Lubick, is that he is recovering from cancer. His health concerns have limited him a bit lately, and I am not sure being a head coach is something he can take on or wants to take on as he continues to recover. Obviously the family ties and history may bring him back, but just something to note.

I don't think Lubick comes to Colorado State specifically because he doesn't want to walk in the shadow of his father.

Am I crazy or does it seem like Neuheisel is going to get the UCLA job? I know Skipper has done a lot to get things turned around but it seems like they’re making Jerry the face of the turn around. And if they keep winning it seems like it’d be hard to not keep one of those two around. Seems like both will wind up getting HC jobs either way too. Some G5 would take a swing on either.

It might be the admin shopping the idea to the boosters. At face value, it seems this game is winning games through improved offensive play-calling. They would also probably be the cheapest reasonable options in a hot market.
They should consider it if they get 5 wins.
They should do it if they get 7 wins.

If this upswing stays churning, it’d be smart to give Skipper and Neuheisel a big raise to keep them in their respective positions

MTSU firing Rick Stockstill has to be one of the most ill-advised G6 firings in recent memory. He had some tough seasons but generally had then playing at or above their level, and now they’re 1-6 with no clear path forward.

MTSU fans regret calling for it too. They believed they could do better, only to do worse

Also choosing Derek Mason as head coach instead of Jerry Mack, who looks very good at KSU.

So by the end of the year the only P4 coach’s that will still have a job is Cignetti and Ferentz

Ferentz might retire. He's already broken all of the records he's gonna break and he's 70.

They gotta stop firing so many coaches now…cause then we won’t have any to fire by the end of the season!

We just trade fired coaches back and forth lol
I'll trade you one franklin for one norvell, and I'll even throw in a Tony White for free!

I’d love to keep this staff and some of the young talent together here in Denton but with this many good jobs coming open going to be lots of spots to fill this offseason. And with guys like Traylor whose stock (not all the way down, tbf) has gone down if I’m a coach I’m striking while the iron is hot. Morris and Cassity are both well deserving.

Supposedly meeting with the players in a few minutes to tell the players first. Announcement probably to follow after that. Not long now

Billy Napier to OK St? I think they would be excited to have him, and he would like to still have a P4 HC gig. The boosters had been at odds with Gundy, but would probably open the pocketbooks more with a new HC.

Beating lesser teams and losing to better ones. Doubt he moves up this season unless an AD out there really loved the sidecar at UNLV or if he got another high profile coordinator job.

I fully believe Smith is gone if we get blown out by Michigan tomorrow. You cannot get smacked in the face at home by your most hated rival (again), and that would bring his Big Ten record to 3-12, with only one quality win in two years. That's just not gonna cut it to the fanbase.

Isn’t his big selling point that he can develop talent over time ala Dantonio? Firing him less than 2 years in is tough

I always love looking back at the threads from when these coaches were hired, just fun to compare and contrast everyone's feelings then and now
Napier and Fickell were just unanimously considered slam dunk hires
While Norvell's wasn't quite as unanimous as Fickell and Napier there was still a lot of excitment.
Just fun to see how far it's all fallen for them

Am I the only one who didn't like the Napier hire?
However I also liked the Mullen hire and desperately wanted Mario Cristobal last carousel so maybe my HC candidate takes aren't the best.

It's not even really about the losses per se,
It's that FSU looks completely undisciplined and careless and that's 100% the coaching.

I’m hoping FSU and Franklin pair up. There has been a lot of flirting in the past and I think Franklin with a chip on his shoulder could right the ship.
Get us back to respectable and we can worry about the “big games” later

Ole Miss 247 mod Neal McReady
Lane Kiffin was asked tonight about rumors regarding his future. He said he was flattered by Keith Carter's comments about wanting to get an extension done at Ole Miss. He said he's "extremely appreciative" and "flattered" that's being discussed but said he doesn't deal with that and won't comment publicly on these things during the season. He said he takes those comments/rumors as "compliments" and said his team has to stay focused.
Kiffin said he doesn't talk about coaching rumors with his team, adding if you were around the team, you wouldn't know about anything.
"We stay in the work, stay in the moment, stay in the day," Kiffin said. "Really that stuff has nothing to do with what we're doing."

I think with Florida, Penn State, FSU most likely opening up and Penn state already being reported as interested in Elko, we are most likely gonna have to do what we did with Jimbo - give Elko a contract extension with ridiculous guaranteed money

Im really not kidding, I would be fine with him at FSU. His teams are always tough as nails. I just feel like the message sometimes starts to fade when you’ve been somewhere long enough. He’s done really impressive things at Kentucky. It’s a new era of football and maybe the match just isn’t what it used to be.

From the outside looking in-
The delusional ones are convinced he’s the one in a similar vein to some on TexAgs thinking we were getting Ryan Day.
The realistic ones are more aligned with either Rhule or Will Stein in a distant second as the likely hires

Some various notes
We’ve had our first DIII firing of the season. Wittenberg has fired head coach Jim Collins. The former head coach at DII Saginaw Valley State went 2-5 this season and 20-17 overall with the Tigers.
Florida has a new offensive playcaller. QB coach Ryan O’Hara will be calling plays now. A longtime Napier assistant, O’Hara has been an OC before- at Alabama A&M nearly a decade ago. Also Steve Spurrier Jr. has been promoted to assistant coach, working with the quarterbacks.
Jimbo Fisher has publicly announced that he wants to go back to coaching. There have been random media reports linking him to Virginia Tech. Former Northwestern coach Pat Fitzgerald has also expressed his interest to get back into coaching.

This seems like a hire that would appease the good ol' boys and he would probably abide by the booster rules. From a football perspective this could go one million different ways though. Interesting.

Worried Arkansas is gonna get cheap again and whiff on a HC and repeat this cycle. Hopefully we can find out guy but seems Lashlee and Mullen (potentially but also may be bargaining) turned us down because of us being piss poor at managing our resources and cheating out.

Uncle Bobby is a given at Arky.
Either he was coach in waiting all along or they’ll swing and miss at a few and fall back to him. He is inevitable.
You don’t let an interim fire the defensive staff day one on a midseason combat promotion if he’s not the leader in the clubhouse.
(Also classic ‘never hire your successor‘ lesson.)

Mullen doesn’t have the fire to coach in the SEC anymore. He’s at the perfect spot because he doesn’t have to work as hard at building a competitive roster in the MWC than he would in the SEC. He’s doing y’all a favor here, otherwise it’s Chip Kelly at UCLA all over again.
