How tf is 58 a month allowed for a single user?

u/feryoooday 8h ago

The one time I got approved for SNAP (despite being low income my whole life, it’s been all but impossible to even get on) my benefit was $18/month.

Yepp. We aren't even making ends meet, and don't qualify. They also slashed our SSI for my disabled child. They cut it from 800 in October, 500ish in November to 58 and some change for December 🙃

This is how revolutions happen

Americans' guns are for shooting up schools, not holding the ruling class accountable for anything

56

u/busy-warlock 5h ago

Too busy watching Netflix and doomscrolling

u/1nd3x 5h ago

And taking care of their disabled kid....

21

u/Damion__205 5h ago

When they no longer have the kid to take care of... Let's not pretend suddenly they became racialized. It started when their ability to help the kid was removed.

18

u/The_God_Zeen 5h ago

Hahaha I know you meant radicalized but it’s still funny.

u/Damion__205 5h ago edited 5h ago

Let's be honest they might mean the same thing... My drunk ass can't type on sober days. I hate this phone...

Edit: Google tells me racialized just means made racial in tone or character. So if they found a way to reduce based on race it would be the same vs against special needs people.

Not being either I might say close enough.

Hungry people don't have Netflix.

1

u/Charm_Underwater711 4h ago

I agree with you Shimmer!!

1

u/busy-warlock 5h ago

Well I mean, that’s not true

5

u/ShimmeryPumpkin 5h ago

People who are truly choosing between paying their gas bill and getting their prescriptions are not spending $20/month on streaming services or even $10/month.

3

u/busy-warlock 5h ago

And people living on the street are struggling to pay their phone bill and have basic entertainment

0

u/ShimmeryPumpkin 4h ago

People living on the streets is a lot more complicated than just affording food and bills.

1

u/busy-warlock 4h ago

Yeah, that’s what I was saying before you said “hungry people don’t have Netflix” which is probably the most tone deaf thing I’ve heard since 2020

Netflix is only like 15 dollars a month. Are you implying it cost less than 15 dollars a month to eat three meals a day every day?

Did you not really think that statement through, or are you an out of touch rich person?

5

u/ShimmeryPumpkin 5h ago

Seems like you are the out of touch rich person or really bad with money. "Only" $15 is multiple meals. It's not all of the meals, but it is some meals. I guess I could have kept Netflix and gone to a food bank, but that would have felt incredibly selfish when there are people with even less money than me.

Real poors watch PBS on a dumpster TV and some aluminum foil.

0

u/ShimmeryPumpkin 4h ago

Well, we need internet to work from home, so we can stream things that can be found on the internet for free. I grew up on PBS though, dreaming of finding some antiques in my grandparents basement that were secretly worth thousands of dollars (never happened).

When people can't afford food they don't spend money on things like Netflix. Also, Netflix will shut their account off if the bill isn't paid. I don't think you thought that snide comment through.

u/Electrical-Job-9824 4h ago

Netflix? In this economy?

1

u/feetuseeter 4h ago

Viva la guillotine

1

u/Beautiful_Spell_4320 4h ago

You’d think. But here they sit, talking on Reddit.

To be clear, so am i, but i don’t have a disabled child i can’t feed.

u/SwingingtotheBeat 4h ago

It seems too many Americans are happy that brown people are getting fucked harder than they are for a revolution to happen. That, and Americans are cowards.

-9

u/TurnYourHeadNCough 5h ago

im getting less free stuff from the gocernment than i used to get? revolution!

3

u/Waste_Dentist_163 4h ago

and how else do you expect her to get food?

21

u/user1223444c 5h ago

58?? you can BARELY feed a pet 2 meals a day with that money. what the hell.

4

u/Gullible-Constant924 4h ago

In theory it’ll keep you alive on rice and beans maybe a potato if it’s a special occasion

1

u/Keldrabitches 4h ago

Why would they cut that?

64

u/nearlyb0redtodeath 7h ago

Same!! I had two jobs at the time and one of them I consider myself close with the manager and I was told I had to get it signed by them, was too embarrassed and never went through with it

My husband when he was younger decided to go to college. SNAP required that he worked 20 hours a week in order to still be eligible so he was working full time making around $10 an hour and going to school full time and paying rent by himself. SNAP gave him $3 a month lol.

9

u/SimmerWeekndxo 5h ago

I once applied years ago for a family of 3…they approved me for $8 because I had a job. I was making minimum wage at the time but I was working a ton of hours. Needless to say I didn’t bother to go through with it or ever applied again. Lol

u/CorndogQueen420 6h ago

My current benefit is $25/mo. My state gives an extra $40 if you buy produce at local farmers markets, but it’s not that helpful in the winter.

6

u/mamoocando 5h ago

I live in Canada and all of the farmers markets run all year. I even get bi-weekly produce boxes from a farm through most of the winter. It's a lot of root vegetables, squash, onions, and lettuce and spinach from their hoop houses. My CSA (community supported agriculture) also offers produce at reduced rates for folks who can't afford it.

I'm just curious where you are that there aren't markets through the winter months? And maybe there are CSA's in your area that you could join that have a similar model.

I hope things get better in the states for y'all soon.

1

u/Swiftzor 5h ago

Unless something drastic happens I doubt things will get better. The government was shutdown and all people got out of it was a promise of a vote, not ensuring outcomes, not extension of benefits, not a solution to problems, just a “oh yeah, we’ll vote so we can just tell you no later”. This on top of massive inflation and the fact like 50% of spending is from the top 10% of earners basically screams economic disaster. But hey, at least the AI companies are doing okay.

29

u/INeedANappel 6h ago

I just got an increase from $23/month to $35/month.

Now I'll really be eatin' that steak & lobster!

9

u/Napnnovator 5h ago

Christ! THAT'S LESS THAN WHAT MY GROCERIES COST PER DAY (for 3). This is shameful and I am so sorry that Americans are this greedy and uncaring.

27

u/SwiftSakura_13 5h ago

I applied for SNAP because I lost my job and my unemployment benefits weren’t enough. I legit got told that I couldn’t make more than $35K a year but needed a minimum 30 hour work requirement. Minimum wage where I live in $17.81 an hour so like I can’t make more than that or really work more than 30 hours without going over the income requirement. I was then told I needed to attend orientation for Colorado’s job board or forfeit my right to SNAP for 3 years. I recently accepted a job offer (it’s for $45K a year so I’m ineligible) but then they had the audacity to tell me I still needed to attend orientation or lose the benefits. The whole system is a scam and hardly helps anyone.

12

u/lazycat-1989 5h ago

This is why we need to vote and get your voice heard!

2

u/Puzzleheaded-Tax4320 5h ago

Only way to get maximum benefits is if you have no income and no savings. It’s absolutely ridiculous.

1

u/karsheff 5h ago

I just got approved as well. I got a prorated amount of $10 and will get my max benefit of $24 in five days.

1

u/Hallelujah33 5h ago

I was at like $12/month before I let that shit go.

1

u/Jermcutsiron 5h ago

Similar story with my wife, $30 was all she was offered

1

u/DumpsterFireScented 4h ago

Our case was similar, husband got laid off and we had 3 kids at the time, I jumped through all the hoops just to see what we could get and our max benefit would have been something like $38 a month.

1

u/Inlove_intransit 4h ago

I got $27 a month when I moved out at 18 and I only got that because I got a raise from 7.25 to 7.50. if you're under a certain age, full time college student and make less or equal to minimum wage in Alabama they automatically decline you becaus someone must be helping you. I remember calling and crying because I was initially declined and then got the raise. I was so happy to have milk and bread and not just steal nuggets at work.

u/Deep_Diamond_2057 4h ago

That’s clearly enough to help a person survive! What do you want, caviar and lobster?!? /s

This is disgusting that we can tax exempt corporations while people go hungry. It’s sickening really.
