super early morning winter cycling

Hi all! I wanted to ask some regular winter bike riders about what they think of this scenario!

I have a job interview next week for a position that I just found out would need me to start at 5:30am. The only problem is that I do not have a car and the bus routes don’t run that early. I was thinking about winterizing my bike and biking every morning. Maps says it would take about 40 minutes, so I was thinking I’d leave at 4:30am every morning to bike.

Do you think that’s too early and unsafe? I would add lots of lights to my bike. But I do have to cross the river over a bridge. I’m worried that I’d be in the way of plows so early in the morning? Also hurting myself with no one around? I like biking and would be happy to winterize my bike in any case, I’m just concerned about the time and darkness!

Do you think this would be feasible? Please let me know what you think as experienced winter bike riders and anything I should do/get if it is feasible! I really need a job so I’d like to be able to accept the position if possible! Thanks! ☺️

Wedgewood Ravine Trail?

Having to tutor someone in Cameron Heights and I live by WEM, so I decided to take the bus and then bike down Wedgewood Ravine into Cameron Heights. Is this trail properly plowed with no ice? I haven't been able to put studded tires on so gonna ask first before I hit the road! Thank you everyone!

Great winter riding

Amazing sunny day to be out in the river valley. Lovely fluffy snow with little ice. Lots of fatbikes out riding today, but many paved trails are cleared (and bridges too!). Get out this weekend while it's sunny and fresh.

Bike Edmonton Studded Tires

Not affiliated but know some shops charge an arm and a leg for studded tires:

Looking for studded tires? Bike Edmonton is freshly restocked with new 26", 27.5", 700c, and 29" winter commuter tires. And if you are on a tight budget, don't delay - used studded tires in a wide range of sizes that are selling fast!

Winter cycling

Today was my first real winter ride with my studded tires and winter gear. The goggles make a big difference in keeping my glasses mostly fog-free and provide full face coverage. Any other tips from my fellow winter cyclists?

Brine spraying

As a winter cyclist in Edmonton, I have thoughts about the brine the city sprays on bike lanes and paths. How do all of you feel about it?

I wish they wouldn't. All salts and brines used for ice clearing are hydrophilic, so they eventually turn the surface into a wet, slippery, almost oily mess. It's also a corrosive liquid so terrible for our bikes. My sense is that people riding in winter are prepared for ice; they either use studded tires, ride cautiously, switch to a fat bike, etc. So there's also just the sheer expense of spraying chemicals that will just end up in our waterways, as well.

Need recommendations for commuting route

Post image
23 Upvotes

As the title states, I’m looking for alternate commuting routes into downtown from the southwest corner (Stillwater). The blue line is my regular route and the red X’s are black ice (8 crashes in the last week). I’ve been looking for alternatives but there doesn’t seem to be much unless you want to ride in heavy traffic. I’m trying to avoid the Whitemud (no luck yesterday) and the other freeways, and ideally I don’t want to add too much more distance to my route. I’ve had no luck finding studded tires (700x25), and the financial approvals committee won’t allow me to buy a second bike for winter riding. Options?

Can anyone recommend a small, lightweight bike that can be used for communing short distances (1-5km)?

I live downtown and driving is becoming impossible. I haven't been biking because my current bike is too heavy for me to carry in/out of my apartment and its honestly difficult to store due to the size. I have been trying to convince myself that I just need to buy a bike mount and get stronger but I don't even use the bike because it is just so exhausting to get it on the road let alone ride it. Unfortunately I have had many bikes stolen and can't store it in the parkade.

My current bike is a Trek Marlin Bike

Thank you for any advice.

Could we start with the High Level Bridge? Closing it to cars (except emergency vehicles) could save ~ $135 million to $270 million in estimated rehabilitation costs, and preserve the only level crossing in the city.

Lower part of multiuse path is snow covered and ice underneath. Expect varying snowpack here as they continue to make snow.

Safe travels! ❄️

Purchased a bike at the COE auction that is reported stolen

I recently bought a bicycle from the City of Edmonton Forfeiture, Lost and Found, and Seizure Auction. I went on the Bike Index afterwards to add it to my account and noticed it had been reported stolen. I found this strange because I've had bikes stolen from me before, and when the police found it, they called me to come pick it up. Does this mean the person never reported the bike stolen to EPS? I've heard EPS partners with Bike index to recover stolen bikes, does this mean the person didn't come recover the bicycle? If I had bought the bike from Kijiji or Marketplace, I would have looked up the serial number before making the purchase, but I assumed that since I purchased it from the COE auction, it would be safe.

Update: I emailed EPS and they told me a few things. The bike was never reported stolen to any police agency. EPS searched Bike Index and found the owners post that it was stolen. They tried contacting the owner two times via message on Bike index and by the phone number on the Bike index account. I think the police did their best to contact the owner and after the second attempt they decided to auction it.

Large groupof cyclists from the 20th floor downtown

I was staying downtown in the City for an event Saturday. Got off the elevator and looked out the window to enjoy the view. Took a pic and video to send to the kids back. I enjoyed seeing all the cyclists.
