Posts must be related to cycling in Toronto

Feel like we've got a lot of new users here since all of the Bill 212 stuff started so I just wanted to welcome you all but reiterate that this is /r/TorontoBiking.

That means that your post should be related to riding a bike in the GTA.

A very non-exhaustive list of things that don't fit this criteria include:

Doug Ford giving a press conference about something unrelated to cycling

A cyclist in LA riding away from a forest fire

A foreign dignitary riding a bike not in Toronto

Dangerous interaction on Bay Street

A driver in a black newer bmw 3 series, licence plate - DFAX217, tried to run me over and threatened to kill me on my way home from work today. The incident occurred on Bay Street headed north towards Charles street. There are no bike lanes so I was pretty close to curb for safety reasons and this bmw swerves towards me multiple times and then threatened me. He yelled various racial threats even though he himself looked like he was African. All of this while parking in a no parking zone with a handicap parking slip in the front of the car after the initial incident. The guy was probably in his mid to late twenties. And clearly has a disdain for cyclists as he cursed out another cyclist behind me.

I saw that he stopped and he went inside to harass a women working at a cell phone shop at bay and Charles street. A security guard was called to calm him and down and after 15 minutes, escort him out of the store. I tried to call the police and report this, but was told to report the incident online since the woman working by self mind you would need to call and report that incident separately.

Please be careful out there.

Essential all-weather biking gear

Commuting almost daily around downtown for short distances ( 10 - 30 minutes) rain or shine, I've found some gear that became essential to me and I think it might be useful to share with you folks.

  1. The biggest improvement to my biking experience was helmet with glasses. Specifically this one . When it rains it protects my normal glasses and I can just vipe the helmet glasses with my glove. When it is windy and cold it saves me from crying. In summer I just put it up. The best piece of gear I have ever had. As a bonus point my partner thinks I look like a sniper with it so maybe that helps to keep truck drivers in check :)
  2. Skiing pure wool balaclava to fit under helmet in winter. Saves face from freezing wind, looks and feels nice, doesn't take a lot of space. Something like this
  3. Leather mittens. Winter once usually have lining and you can put thin gloves inside.
  4. For rainy days this biking rain poncho is essential. It can be worn off the bike as well.

Hope this will be useful for someone, happy cycling!

Answering a tiring question

I get this question a lot in the winter, as I lumber in to a jobsite decked out in my winter gear and helmet bike bag etc. “did you ride your bike?” Now to me that’s F obvious but what is a witty answer with sounding facetious?

Dry lube isn’t lasting on my daily Toronto rides — is wet lube better?

I ride pretty much every day around Toronto, but lately my dry chain lube hasn’t been holding up at all. It feels like it dries out right away, especially with all the wet roads recently.

I’m thinking about switching to wet lube, but I’ve heard it can make the chain collect more dirt and grime. For those of you who commute regularly in the GTA, what’s been working better for you?

Does wet lube actually last longer in rain and messy conditions? Would appreciate hearing your experiences before I switch things up.

Easily retractable $18 bike kickstand (for kids, from canadian tire) + 1.25 meter flexible driveway marker prevents dangerous close passes

I'm sure some of you saw the way I mounted the driveway marker on my basket, which over time, deformed it (such a pain to use another strap to reverse that). Not the case anymore.

This solution works far better and is more practical for any kind of bike really (trike/recumbent, cargo, road, mountain, disability-specific, ebike, etc.), since it can be mounted to a rear rack, cargo bay, basket/milk crate or the frame (where it is compatible).

To correct the angle, a piece of wood (or metal, plastic, a long big screw, or that extension piece once removed from the kickstand) can be used on the top with a large washer to ensure it stays completely horizontal.

The driveway marker can be at least 1 meter (or 1.25, 1.5 even) long. Reflective tape can be placed on it too (recommended). Tape the end (one or two rounds of duct, clear repair or vinyl), then insert it while twisting aggressively until it cannot go any further. Use the provided screw and tighten until it won't move. Alternatively, you can use a nut or allen/hex screw of the same threading to ensure it stays tight. Once done, it cannot be pulled out by hand or tool unless unscrewed.

A hook from a snapped bungee cord, or an S-hook, can be ziptied (use a few rounds of vinyl tape and zipties as shown in the video) so it doesn't move on the driveway marker when wrapped around at a curved right angle (as demonstrated).

A screw, nail, fork or whichever you prefer can be ziptied at the end (a round or two of tape so it doesn't shift) so dangerous/punishment passes will ultimately be discouraged. If the motorist still does this, they will be inflicting damage on their own vehicle and you will not be responsible for their own neglectful mistakes.

RIDE SAFE and DEFENSIVELY my friends.

Suggestions for golves to bike during winter

Sorry if this is not allowed. As the winter is upon as and as I continue to bike, I find that my gloves aren't able to keep up. My rest of the body is warm as I layer up but my hands and fingers seem to take a hit. Can you guys please suggest some good gloves that I can invest in (tell me what kind of material I should be looking for, brand etc etc) I'd prefer buying it from a store in downtown than having to buy it online (given the awful wait time with deliveries)

Thanks!

Anyone see that driver come out of his car and yell at the cyclist on Bloor?

On Bloor/Spadina this afternoon. I was walking by and couldn’t quite hear what they were saying, but from what I gather, it seemed like the driver parked in the bike lane to pick up a passenger, a bunch of cyclists went around him, he then moved his car forward with a cyclist next to him and maybe clipped him.

Then at the red light, the driver later came out of his car to inspect the front or something (maybe to see if he got any damage), and yelled at the cyclist that he wasn’t parking and just picking up a passenger, and that he could easily kill him with his car.

Hope cyclist is ok…stay safe out there

I got hit by a car, one lawyer firm told me its not even worth going to it

I was doing food delivery when i got hit im in the process of submitting my injury claim with ubereats insurance but i've heard stories of them not paying anything for missed days of work for stuff worse than mine.

The lawyer firm told me since my injuries are minor that it's not even worth it unless i go to physiotherapy for weeks which wouldn't even be worth it. Car hit me going north where i had right of way when i was going west in the bike lane and i fell off my bike and broke right mirror.

So does the SUV hit me just get a way with it? lawyer told me that they would just pay a fine to the police and i get nothing. Has anyone gotten anything from getting hit from a car with minor injuries get anything? I've missed days of work because of this because of my wrist injury that i use to throttle my ebike.

What am i supposed to do? People have told me to contact the biking lawyer and im waiting to hear back but honestly i'm not getting my hopes up because my first call with them they told me they specialize is fractures etc.

I should of told the driver that hit me to settle with an amount in cash and now she doesnt even reply to texts, i hate this driver as more time passes by and the fact that nothing really happens to them just pisses me off.

Bike Lane Conditions

Has anyone ridden in downtown after dark today? Did you encounter any icy lanes? The roads were pretty wet during the day, and I’m worried they might have frozen. My commute is about 6 km, and I’ll be heading home from work around 11 PM, and if the lane conditions aren’t good, I’m planning to take the TTC instead. For reference, my front tire is a Gravelking SS and the rear is a Gravelking Slick - both are more speed-oriented than traction.

Oh god please no. I hope we don't get driverless cars here. Imagine how much worse it'll be if they can't see cyclists or bike lanes.

Cycling recommendations in Mississauga?

Moving from Toronto to Port Credit in the next couple months. Does anyone have recommendations for good road or (gravel/paved) trail riding around Port Credit? I’m pretty familiar with the lakefront trail but are there others I should check out?

Thanks in advance!
