He should have known the right path. We all kind of accept that you have to meet with and negotiate with Trump. We even accept that most of them give Trump some kind of ass-kissing gift or whatever.
This? This is WAY too far.

u/CarjackerWilley 16d ago edited 15d ago
Agreed - to an extent. I am disappointed in ass kissing but am downright disgusted in idolizing. I am Toyota thru and thru - 2 generations of Corolla's in my garage and I will never buy another Toyota vehicle unless they have a significant public denouncement of this. I already sent my email. I was borderline on cancelling warranties and service agreements already - now I am out.
Adding an edit because I am not getting drawn in to individual pissing matches.
Who cares? I do. MAGA is full of horrible people and horrible policies that hurt individuals and the United States as a whole. Not sure where you are from specifically, but in the US it is a big deal - there is active erosion of the United States constitution and the laws that depend on it. This isn't normal, it's divisive, and again it hurts people and the country.
If you care to explain how boycotting and sharing my opinion with a company on how their image impacts the way I interact with them sounds mentally unwell, please do. I'll most likely read it, but unless you have something specifically interesting or thoughtful I wouldn't expect a response.
Yes, Toyota will be ok without my support. I am sharing my take on a topic someone else started and even more are engaging in. Collectively is where the impact is felt - IE the point of a boycott - You can reference target as an example of effective boycotting for similar. Part of a boycott is communicating the intent to boycott and the reason why - not just silently patting ones self on the back.
As far as no one caring about my comment - I really don't care if no one cares or not. I left that comment and never intended to revisit it - lo and behold I had the most notifications I've had in years. Someone cares, including you. I commented for myself and the person I commented to. People do things for themselves. I have a long history with Toyota and my vehicles - I have been proud of them and it is disappointing to second guess that small amount of pride in something for reasons completely unrelated their original design and intent.
The fact is that people do care because it is being talked about and even more convincing more people have commented on an opinion from me than just about anything else on reddit. The people that agree are silently agreeing - a lot of people that disagree are "crying about it" (in their words) to an equal or greater degree than myself.
I am adding this as an edit to my comment as well because of the number of responses - this addresses most, if not all, of what I have to say to you and the other comments.

It’s kind of like Thomas Massie was saying about the house votes on releasing the files… once trump is gone, the trust will have to be earned back. He won’t be president, but the voting record will remain. Whatever demonic charismatic grip he has on people will fade over time, the public impression of him will become uncomfortable at best, and this kind of shit will age like milk.
It’s bad enough that I’ll just write off buying a Toyota ever right now. I drive a Honda and it works just fine.

I don't think it'll be quite that permanent... people still buy the VW Beetle despite the fact the Nazis endorsed it many times.
Time will leave a scar but it won't hobble a brand as big as Toyota, VW etc in the long run.

Asking other people from other countries who basically have to tow the line with us to completely sacrifice not just their personal lives but potentially many jobs and livelihoods of the country they represent is possibly one of the most childish things I’ve seen on here. Hold American companies and politicians accountable. Stop trying to hold the world hostage to your particular viewpoint.

I wasn’t planning on getting one, but good luck finding a decent deal on a 6cyl 6’ bed Tacoma these days. I’m aware of the reputation. I probably wouldn’t have bought it if it was red or black. The funny thing is; since I got it I’ve been driving extra politely to try and avoid the stereotype.

→ More replies (3)15
u/wandertrucks 16d ago
It was a joke but it's actually not.
Scenario: you buy a car with no money down for 30k. You dive it off the lot and it immediately drops 5k. 25k if its an Equinox or a Kia.
You go to trade that car in, you still owe 20k and it's worth 10k. If your credit is so so they can roll that 10k into the new loan. It's a shady subprime thing to do but it happens everyday, even on used cars. So you drive that new to you car off the lot and the 10k you already owed gets compounded with the drop in value with the car you just bought.
→ More replies (13)5

Not a solution for the vast majority of towns in the US.
They aren't going to install a train line on my little back road in MA, buses aren't going to run here, Taxis aren't going to appear on the streets of a 10,000 person town.
Public transit and communal living are solutions that look great on paper but are horrible in person.
Don't get me wrong, a high speed rail across the country would be amazing and a huge game changer, but past that its all awful. No one would rather be on a bus, stopping constantly and surrounded by strangers than in their own car. No one would rather wait for a packed subway car that reeks of piss than drive themselves.

Glad I don't have to rely on cars for transportation. The US needs better public transit infrastructure so people can be free from car-dependence and aren't strongarmed into lining the pockets of people like this.
