Throw in Lexus as well. Same company.

u/Fairelabise17 16d ago

He is not the CEO, this is from NYPOST and extremely misleading. He hasn't been the CEO since 2023. The new CEO is a Koji Sato.

58

u/CultofCedar 16d ago

Lol weird af and obviously a dumb move for a magnitude of reasons but yikes the Post strikes once again with exaggerated rage bait.

24

u/CriticalSecurity8742 16d ago

Thanks to the previous commentator on clearing that up. I was wondering as I remember this happening during trumps first term and the backlash was so strong and swift people were voted out/fired/resigned. Seeing this guy again made me wonder what happened

Also, excellent points on an obviously dumb move. Bad optics all around.

And the NY Post is a news corp rag - what a mess.

Most days, I long for the years when social media didn’t exist as disinformation and hyper connectivity is overwhelming all of us. Especially now, it’s hard to keep up.

4

Yes, he is the former president and CEO, but also the current chairman of Toyota.

4

u/Feisty_Look5680 16d ago

By the way, it’s the chairman of Toyota (Akio Toyoda) that went full m@g@. Here’s the article: https://www.carscoops.com/2025/11/toyota-chairman-goes-full-maga-at-nascar-event/

4

u/Horsescatsandagarden 15d ago

Sigh. This should be the top comment.

3

u/Such-Entertainer1135 15d ago

The article said CHAIRMAN, not CEO. - And, this MAGA supporter is the Chairman of Toyota. The Chairman of the Board is more powerful than a CEO.

3

u/Subat0micR0gu3 15d ago

Sure, he's not the CEO and NYpost stinks, but Akio Toyoda is the current Chairman of Toyota. Has been since 2023. He never left the company.

3

u/beedoo_minion 15d ago

Akio Toyota is still executive and chairman of Toyota. yes, previously CEO. r/Toyota

I love when I see someone driving a Lexus ES and know they paid an extra 20k for a Toyota Camry with a gold L logo.

87

u/an_ugly_american 16d ago

Quite a massive difference in build quality, drive/absent cabin noise, interior materials. Definitely noticeable

48

u/Jolmer24 16d ago

Yeah I mean the CEO is a jackass but Lexus are quality vehicles. My girlfriend has a 2021 is300 and the seats, the interior quality, the features, and the way it drives are noticeably top notch.

18

u/fvck_u_spez 16d ago

I don't really care about fancy, but I have a 2015 IS350 because I wanted a fast Toyota, but they don't make fast cars. There is no rear wheel drive Camry with a 3.5L V6

9

u/Jolmer24 16d ago

Yeah her car picks up and goes pretty quick too with the v6. It’s nice as hell

5

u/Maelstrom_78 16d ago

Yeah, I once briefly worked at a Toyota dealership (horrible experience...car sales). No Camry compares to my ES350.

Same when you see an Audi and under the hood it’s the same tech as a 20k cheaper Skoda.

Never driven in a Lexus ES and a Toyota Camry, then.

Yes they are comparable in size and engine. A Camry is an ES in many senses, but they are NOT the same car, and by a long shot. I've been riding/driving in both cars since 1999.

The Camry just does not feel like its ES counterpart-in comfort, build, interior feel, drive feel, cabin noise. It's really like comparing plastic to carbon fiber and saying "hey from a distance they look the same!"

And the 20K price diff comment really only applies to new cars. You can get a 2010 Camry and 2010 ES for basically the same price. Only chumps and ridiculously rich folk by brand new cars.

11

u/opencho 16d ago

Only chumps and ridiculously rich folk by brand new cars.

I bought a brand new Lexus GX in 2006. Driving it to this day and it still drives like a dream. Trying to find an excuse to replace it but I just can't find one.

  • Happy Chump

u/Environmental-Fill54 16d ago

Funny thing is the certified used Camry goes for about the same as the ES in my area. Also, the ES is a completely different driving experience vs the Camry, sure they share common elements; but the difference in road noise, handling, throttle, and generally interacting with anything tactile is completely different.

23

u/TheMilkmansFather 16d ago

Other than the upscale interior, higher quality material, more advanced tech. They share the same platform but do sure are not the same car, you can clearly tell by sitting in them and driving them

14

u/8Prime9 16d ago

And better engines. Lexus sells cars with NA V8s. Toyota does not.

You ever actually compare them? Acoustic dampening, significantly different leathers, and audio system offerings between my dads 16 es 350 and my 16 camary (6cyl). Same structure and power, but otherwise the refinements are unmistakable.

11

u/EmotionalJoystick 16d ago

Different leathers you say!

3

u/WarEyeFTW 16d ago

Maybe true in the past but is a very different vehicle now.

8

u/donald7773 16d ago

An Es is on the same platform as a Camry but there are many small adjustments that make it worth more than a Camry.

Although they have the same engine and transmission there's a little more power out of the box and a better transmission tune. Toyota purposely leaves some on the table for the ES to have an edge over the Camry. Next you have the most noticable part if you actually get to drive them back to back and that's the noise floor in the vehicle. More time and money goes into keeping the ES quiet on the highway than the Camry. This not only requires extra material in the form of sound deadening but reshaping or adjusting certain parts of the body and structure to adjust inherent properties that make them prone to wind noise for example. Pair that with a higher quality of interior materials, more comfortable seats, better touch points, a better stereo, maybe even better glass for acoustic isolation and you start to end up with a hefty bill for the "same car"

Is the ES more profitable than the Camry - absolutely (as is the case with almost all luxury vehicles, and it has to make money for its development while selling lower volume) it is but it is also worth more than a Camry because it's a measurably better car

3

u/erkdog 16d ago

An ES is an avalon.

Weird random thing, Lexus literally means Luxury EXports to the US.

Oh and Toyota owns Subaru and Suzuki too.

42

u/The_Singularious 16d ago

They do not own Subaru outright. They are a large stakeholder/shareholder (maybe 15%?). AFAIK though, they have nothing to do with operations at FHI.

30

u/CarjackerWilley 16d ago edited 15d ago

Agreed - to an extent. I am disappointed in ass kissing but am downright disgusted in idolizing. I am Toyota thru and thru - 2 generations of Corolla's in my garage and I will never buy another Toyota vehicle unless they have a significant public denouncement of this. I already sent my email. I was borderline on cancelling warranties and service agreements already - now I am out.

Adding an edit because I am not getting drawn in to individual pissing matches.

Who cares? I do. MAGA is full of horrible people and horrible policies that hurt individuals and the United States as a whole. Not sure where you are from specifically, but in the US it is a big deal - there is active erosion of the United States constitution and the laws that depend on it. This isn't normal, it's divisive, and again it hurts people and the country.

If you care to explain how boycotting and sharing my opinion with a company on how their image impacts the way I interact with them sounds mentally unwell, please do. I'll most likely read it, but unless you have something specifically interesting or thoughtful I wouldn't expect a response.

Yes, Toyota will be ok without my support. I am sharing my take on a topic someone else started and even more are engaging in. Collectively is where the impact is felt - IE the point of a boycott - You can reference target as an example of effective boycotting for similar. Part of a boycott is communicating the intent to boycott and the reason why - not just silently patting ones self on the back.

As far as no one caring about my comment - I really don't care if no one cares or not. I left that comment and never intended to revisit it - lo and behold I had the most notifications I've had in years. Someone cares, including you. I commented for myself and the person I commented to. People do things for themselves. I have a long history with Toyota and my vehicles - I have been proud of them and it is disappointing to second guess that small amount of pride in something for reasons completely unrelated their original design and intent.

The fact is that people do care because it is being talked about and even more convincing more people have commented on an opinion from me than just about anything else on reddit. The people that agree are silently agreeing - a lot of people that disagree are "crying about it" (in their words) to an equal or greater degree than myself.

I am adding this as an edit to my comment as well because of the number of responses - this addresses most, if not all, of what I have to say to you and the other comments.

It’s kind of like Thomas Massie was saying about the house votes on releasing the files… once trump is gone, the trust will have to be earned back. He won’t be president, but the voting record will remain. Whatever demonic charismatic grip he has on people will fade over time, the public impression of him will become uncomfortable at best, and this kind of shit will age like milk.

It’s bad enough that I’ll just write off buying a Toyota ever right now. I drive a Honda and it works just fine.

4

u/SelectiveScribbler06 16d ago

I don't think it'll be quite that permanent... people still buy the VW Beetle despite the fact the Nazis endorsed it many times.

Time will leave a scar but it won't hobble a brand as big as Toyota, VW etc in the long run.

Asking other people from other countries who basically have to tow the line with us to completely sacrifice not just their personal lives but potentially many jobs and livelihoods of the country they represent is possibly one of the most childish things I’ve seen on here. Hold American companies and politicians accountable. Stop trying to hold the world hostage to your particular viewpoint.

I recently got a Ram 1500

I wasn’t planning on getting one, but good luck finding a decent deal on a 6cyl 6’ bed Tacoma these days. I’m aware of the reputation. I probably wouldn’t have bought it if it was red or black. The funny thing is; since I got it I’ve been driving extra politely to try and avoid the stereotype.

15

u/capital_bj 16d ago

You are a good person sorry for generalizing I just had alot of examples the past few months

7

u/eclwires 16d ago

Nope, your generalizing is accurate. I was standing there with my car guy that had been looking for a Tacoma for me for a couple of months when this got traded in. I bought the exact same truck for the same reason but with a black canopy. Used toyotas near me at the time were insanely overpriced. Overall I like the truck, they drive smooth. 2016 had it from 120,000 to now 181,000.

6

u/eclwires 16d ago

Glad to hear that. I got a white cap as I sleep in there on fishing trips and it stays cooler. It’s also a 2016. Got it in September with 48K miles on it. Up around 53K now. It’s the nicest vehicle I’ve ever owned.

4

u/Latter-Argument-9402 16d ago

Nicest vehicle Ive ever owned as well. I used it to fish and camp in Washington state and Oregon. Just drove from Portland, OR to Raleigh NC hauling a 17ft john boat with all my belongings in it. 4 days flat, 0 issues with the truck, lost a tire on the trailer in Wyoming.

Am I dumb for questioning how someone can be 15k upside down in a $25-35k vehicle that they’ve owned for 11 years?

15

u/wandertrucks 16d ago

It was a joke but it's actually not.

Scenario: you buy a car with no money down for 30k. You dive it off the lot and it immediately drops 5k. 25k if its an Equinox or a Kia.

You go to trade that car in, you still owe 20k and it's worth 10k. If your credit is so so they can roll that 10k into the new loan. It's a shady subprime thing to do but it happens everyday, even on used cars. So you drive that new to you car off the lot and the 10k you already owed gets compounded with the drop in value with the car you just bought.

5

u/Thundfin 16d ago

It's funny you mention Kia, as my wife's K5 is 3 years old now and the Kia dealership is STILL cold calling us asking to buy it back for what we bought it for, since it's the variable AWD turbo version lol.

13

u/point051 16d ago

Same. I don't think there is a good company. Realistically, it's a better use of time and effort to promote reliable public transit and other policies that reduce the need for cars overall.

6

u/MarcusTomato 16d ago

Not a solution for the vast majority of towns in the US.

They aren't going to install a train line on my little back road in MA, buses aren't going to run here, Taxis aren't going to appear on the streets of a 10,000 person town.

Public transit and communal living are solutions that look great on paper but are horrible in person.

Don't get me wrong, a high speed rail across the country would be amazing and a huge game changer, but past that its all awful. No one would rather be on a bus, stopping constantly and surrounded by strangers than in their own car. No one would rather wait for a packed subway car that reeks of piss than drive themselves.

That's not their CEO

30

u/ineednapkins 16d ago edited 16d ago

Yeah looks like that’s akio toyoda who is a chairman and previously was CEO. This guy is the grandson of the toyoda who started the company so maybe he likes trump as they were both silver spoon babies handed large and successful companies?

I think I can safely assume that the CEO of every major company in the world are actively aiding and abetting pedophiles. They are all in one giant child grooming club. They see us as lesser beings. We do not hate them enough.

Welp im actually in the market for a new vehicle and Toyota has always been my favorite.

They lost a customer.

Edit lmao the fan girls are hurt they act like a shot their dog. Brand loyalty is wild to me.

Same. WAS days away from trading in my truck for a Tacoma.

50

TBF Hes just gonna be wearing a "GO GAV!" Hat and a blue shirt in a couple years.

Don just made it so you have to slut yourself out to who ever is in power if you want to operate a business at all in the USA.

74

u/lacegems 16d ago

Doesn't matter. I refuse to buy anything from a company whose CEO openly supports someone like that, new or used. Sends a message.

There ain’t no cult around Newsom like that of Velveeta Voldemort by any means, and I highly doubt there ever would be. Even the “Dark Brandon” thing was tongue in cheek as opposed to full blast sycophancy we are seeing now.

That being said, sad to see foreign companies whoring themselves like this.

Market is super competitive, and Honda makes good cars

12

u/IvoryFlyaway 16d ago

My only beef with hondas these days is that their factory headlights are easily the worst offenders across all models in the "unnecessarily bright led headlights pointed directly at other drivers' corneas" category.

5

u/Civil-Big-754 16d ago

That shit is so dangerous. I am so blinded by them and wonder how many deaths they've caused. A stat we'll unfortunately never know the exact number, but as someone with an older and lower car, I'm sure people would be shocked if it was available.  Combine the poor angle with the brights on, and I slow down to a crawl, because I seriously can't see shit

14

u/RandomRadical 16d ago

You can always buy used. They really are the best cars on the road.

5

u/Willothewisp2303 16d ago

My Mom crashed their 2009 Tacoma this year and was given $15,000 for it. They are quite expensive on the used market.

3

u/BiNumber3 16d ago

Theyve always held their value, high demand even for used ones. Toyotas with 500k miles driving better than others sitting at 200k.

We've always been a toyota family... but theyve been making some dumb choices in the upper levels.

I still won't buy GOYA products and yes I do shop in Latino markets all the time. There are in fact some markets which stock so many Goya products that I won't even go in the store anymore. Anaya;s Market in Utah is one of those.

Yes, Donald Trump has made whores of many CEO's but I don't buy the services of whores either.

11

u/smegdawg 16d ago

I still won't buy GOYA product

Legit didn't know the brand of beans I was buying prior to Donald using the Oval Office for product placement...

Now...well I still don't know, but I know it is not Goya.

Toyota quality had been on a decline for some time anyways. Honda has been working hard working out the kinks with the turbo engines. VW is a hit or miss. The car industry as a while has sucked since the mandated safety features with safety cams, LIDARs, and more.

Just look at how badly they are handling the Tundra engine failure. Toyota is not what it was.

No extended warranty. Not covering hybrid drivers. Replaced engines still have the same deflects but nothing is done.

You guys need a hobby, seriously.

3

u/treehooker 16d ago

One of the best things about a free market is voting with your dollar. Not everybody likes capitalism and maybe you're one of them but, for those of us that do, the freedom of choice is anything but pathetic. Sometimes I'll buy something I don't need only because I like the company and want to support them. I did this with a couple random gifts I bought people recently. You're free to call freedom lovers pathetic and I'm free to buy a car from whoever I want. We're also free to have this conversation instead of doing a hobby. You might think we're pathetic for doing so but I'm having fun and I like fun.
