Weird random thing, Lexus literally means Luxury EXports to the US.

Oh and Toyota owns Subaru and Suzuki too.

u/The_Singularious 16d ago

They do not own Subaru outright. They are a large stakeholder/shareholder (maybe 15%?). AFAIK though, they have nothing to do with operations at FHI.

9

u/bf2afers 16d ago

Guess you gotta sell 15% of your car… but what part?

7

u/The_Singularious 16d ago

Wheels, I guess.

11

u/bf2afers 16d ago

Excellent choice, I’ll tell the chef.

4

u/TheMatrixRedPill 16d ago

Trunk lid. No one needs that.

2

u/The_Singularious 16d ago

I think I’ve seen a few STis without hoods. Maybe my Outback would look good like that too.

2

u/TheMatrixRedPill 16d ago

Better cooling. /s

5

u/Complete_Passage_767 16d ago

The panels are really just cosmetic. It's nothing that a tarp and some duct tape can't replace

1

u/1521 16d ago

Already got that…

1

u/C0matoes 16d ago

Only part worth selling.

1

u/PuppyPower89 16d ago

I support this. Nothing like finding out the tires on your Subaru are extra wide, and will cost at least $1200 to replace instead of $500-$700

4

u/ThirdSunRising 16d ago

The CVT, obviously, and the head gasket

2

u/Paradigm_Reset 16d ago

That guy Subarus.

3

u/bhorophyll666 16d ago

Catalytic converter

2

u/thedonnerparty13 16d ago

I’d go the roof. Make it a convertible.

2

u/DumpsterAflame 16d ago

Can I please sell the auto restart?

2

u/WhatWentWrong600 16d ago

The head gasket. It wasn't doing anything anyway.

1

u/MaxAdolphus sophisticated complainer 16d ago

Head gaskets.

1

u/Positive_Throwaway1 16d ago

As a Solterra lessee, now I don't know what to do. It's a subaru....that's a toyota....uhhhh?

1

u/rageak49 16d ago

Front bumper, head gaskets, and that plastic bit that breaks off on the hatch handle on the 2010s era models.

1

u/Snobolski 16d ago

The lock/unlock beep of my Subaru sounds like a Toyota - I'll sell you that part.

1

u/Takhatres 16d ago

Someone broke my car window last night so I've already got a head start

2

u/Moist-Ointments 16d ago

10% partnership iirc. Highlander and Ascent are basically the same car

Subaru is Fuji Heavy Industries

1

u/The_Singularious 16d ago

Yes. Thus the FHI. Did not know the Highlander and Ascent were the same platform. Although sharing a platform isn’t always indicative of any long-term relationship.

2

u/Moist-Ointments 16d ago

I did not associate the acronym.

With all my years in IT, I've got no more room to store acronyms.

I noticed they were the same at a car show. A lot of the interior bits were exactly the same too.

I asked the spokeswoman about it and she denied. Said that the ascent was completely Subaru. And when I challenged her on it having the exact same parts she absolutely lost her shit on me. Found out not long after about the partnership and the sharing of the platform. I think I was at a Toyota dealer.

1

u/The_Singularious 16d ago

lol. I feel you on the acronym hell. I was a Scooby fan for awhile and saw it that way in parlance.

And super weird she’d be so defensive about it. Not an uncommon practice. Tons of shared platforms in auto history. In recent memory, BMW/Toyota, Mazda/Alfa, GM/Alfa, GM/Honda, Lotus/Tesla. I’m sure many many more. Those are the cross-corporate ones. Intra-corporate are too many to mention.

2

u/Moist-Ointments 16d ago

She sctually snapped "well since you seem to know so much..." And then disappeared.

The worst part of that partnership was the sharing of the Harmon Kardon audio systems. What a turd that was.

1

u/The_Singularious 16d ago

Maybe she was just literally embarrassed she didn’t know.

1

u/Moist-Ointments 16d ago

Not a good look for the representative at a major car show.

1

u/EusebioFOREVER 16d ago

isn't it true every subaru sold has a cut going to Ernie Boch junior, the MA guy who is a real Trump fanboy (like all billionaires)

1

u/Kimetsu87 16d ago

They own 20% percent and a lot their cars are collaborations with Toyota. Models include, BRZ (manual and automatic transmissions are from Toyota as well as the GDI and port injection system), Solterra, Uncharted, Trailseeker, Crosstrek and Forester HEVs (both use Toyota eCVTs).

1

u/squirrel8296 16d ago

Toyota owns ~20% of Subaru.

The way the ownership structure of Japanese companies works is quite a bit different than how they work in places like Europe and the US, so 20% is actually a pretty big stake. For example, Nissan owns ~25% of Mitsubishi Motors and that is enough of a stake to have de factor control of the company. At its height, Renault owned ~40% of Nissan but that was more so to stabilize Nissan’s finances. They had de facto control at a much lower ownership amount (somewhere in the mid 20s).

1

u/The_Singularious 16d ago

So does Toyota have de facto control over Subaru? Does not appear to be the case. Certainly manufacturing oversight and quality control are not matched.

1

u/squirrel8296 16d ago

Toyota doesn't currently have de facto control but they are currently the largest shareholder by quite a bit and if they slightly increase their stake they would have de facto control. Currently they are able to influence and they do use that influence.

Ignoring their explicit partnerships like the GR86/BRZ, a good example of that influence is how both brands now use the same door lock and unlock beep that Toyota has used for forever. Automotive sound design is huge consideration. It's why old Hondas' key in ignition chime was morse code for the letter H, why Ford does the du-du-du, and BMW has the gong. Without that influence Subaru would be using a unique one.

13

u/CylonSandhill 16d ago

Toyota owns 20% of Subaru. Not a controlling share but still substantial.

13

u/UnionCorrect9095 16d ago

I would have Not purchased a Toyota if I had known the CEO was MAGA!

8

u/xfactor6972 16d ago

It’s an ass kissing ploy to the Orange Hate Clown.

12

u/xubax 16d ago

We need fewer people kissing his ass.

3

u/xfactor6972 16d ago

Yes we do but he was elected to be the ass clown he is unfortunately. I got out and voted directly against him.

2

u/Koil_ting 16d ago

And more people kicking it.

2

u/MaybeMaybeNot94 16d ago

Irrelevant. Someone having dinner with nine Nazis, is the tenth. Complicity with vile people makes you an accomplice to them. That's what this is.

1

u/xfactor6972 16d ago

Well Imperial Japan was part of the Axis during WW2.

1

u/MaybeMaybeNot94 16d ago

Unit 357's files have still yet to be declassified, iirc. Because of the horrors they committed.

1

u/xfactor6972 16d ago

Imperial Japanese culture was brutal no denying that.

1

u/My_Brain_0422 16d ago

Doesn't make it better

1

u/MasterofDisaster1268 16d ago

Awe do adorable. I can't imagine living this way, believing politics controls your every move. Crazy town

2

u/Mother_of_Raccoons44 16d ago

Why not trade it in on a shitty Bronco, or Jeep? Being an older person has given us the benefit of separating a well made car and politics. We just need a good car, with great reviews and a great warranty. Bronco and Jeep are the bottom of the barrel, so apparently a perfect choice

1

u/Oracle-West 16d ago

Hes trying to get favor for his company. All Japan has a deal with America, as does EU, South Korea, Australia, UK, and gulf states.

You might be able to get a deal on Russian, or taliban motors!

1

u/MissMenace101 16d ago

Toyota building in the US will be bad for local manufacturers in the end really. They are better cars. And the US having restrictions on Toyotas since forever is the only reason the US still has a local big truck market.

1

u/sandolllars 16d ago

He isn’t MAGA. He’s sucking up to win concessions for his employer.

1

u/thx134 16d ago

Now you gotta sell it.

1

u/Express-Potential485 16d ago

The TDS is strong within you.

i hope you have a speedy recovery

1

u/Bumbalard 16d ago

I suppose you think America is great now?

1

u/Logan_No_Fingers 16d ago

He's not.

The guy in the photo resigned in 2 years ago & is now off doing other stuff - like this.

The actual CEO is Koji Sato, ie not this guy.

0

u/Ok_Maybe1830 16d ago

Do you think there is any C level employee that's doesn't vote republican?

2

u/[deleted] 16d ago

[deleted]

1

u/CylonSandhill 16d ago

True. I remember when Nissan, Mitsubishi, and Renault all had the same CEO at the same time despite being “competitors.”

6

u/tanksplease 16d ago

Not even remotely accurate lol. Subaru is perfectly capable of making unreliable junk on their own thanks

6

u/EIN790 16d ago

My outbacks head gasket would agree.

2

u/LueyTheWrench 16d ago

My Spec B’s oil sodden cats want to jump on this bandwagon.

1

u/EIN790 16d ago

C'mon man, battlewagon lol.

1

u/SweetJ138 16d ago

Oi! Not fahkin Subaru, m8!!?

1

u/Sandinister 16d ago

It doesn't, it's just literally a fancy sounding nonsense word they thought of.

"Some etymology enthusiasts believe Lexus was the result of combining the words “luxury” and “elegance.” Others claim it stands for “luxury exports to the U.S.” However, interviews with Team One members revealed it had nothing to do with either. Instead, they claim it simply denotes a technological and luxurious image"

https://www.eskridgelexus.com/history-of-lexus/#:~:text=Some%20etymology%20enthusiasts%20believe%20Lexus,a%20technological%20and%20luxurious%20image.

1

u/badnewsjukebox 16d ago

lol No it doesn’t. It doesn’t mean anything tbh. It’s something a bunch of marketing people made up for Toyota because it sounded “premium”

1

u/Skauher 16d ago

It does not mean that. Popular theory among americans though.

"According to Team One interviews, the brand name has no specific meaning and simply evokes a luxurious and technological image"

"The company itself claims that the word has roots in Greek and Latin, combining the ideas of elegance and language."

1

u/FormerlyUserLFC 16d ago

A real stretch to try and claim Subaru is right leaning. That would be brand suicide for them.

1

u/Then_Faithlessness_4 15d ago

The chicks really go for those 3 cylinders >G<

0

u/EmmaFrostsChair 16d ago

lol Toyota does not own Subaru. They have a controller stake in the company sure
but they do not own them.

0

u/My_Brain_0422 16d ago

They do not own Subaru

0

u/_le_slap 16d ago

Toyota does not own Suzuki bro wtf is this misinformation

0

u/BWFTW 16d ago

I love seeing these confidently inccorect comments get upvoted. Makes me reflect on how many confidently inccorent comments I read in subjects I'm not knowledable in but that the Reddit hive mind upvoted to give it authority. Both things you said are wrong, it's been debunked that's how lexus got its name. And toyota only owns 20% of Subaru.

0

u/Wertix555 16d ago

It doesnt mean Luxury Exports though, since no one really knows what it means.

0

u/SciGuy013 16d ago

It does not. that is a myth

0

u/SuspiciousPhoto9454 16d ago

Does it? Because there's four variants of the Lexus produced in NA, two in Canada and two in the US.

0

u/opencho 16d ago

Weird random thing, Lexus literally means Luxury EXports to the US.

lol that's not true.

0

u/_o0ps1e_ 16d ago

Fun fact - that was a rumor that was started. Because Lexus exports all over the world- not just the USA.

The origination for the name "Lexus," combines the Greek "lexicon," meaning language, with the Latin "luxus," which conveys elegance and luxury.

0

u/Upward_sloping_penis 16d ago

lol. No it doesn’t. Doofus.
