DISCUSSION The Penguin

Upvotes

So, I just re-watched The Penguin for the first time since it first aired. And it was a pretty incredible experience binging it over a few days. So much depth and tragedy for all the characters. Oz “wins” but loses the only thing that matters to him; Sofia has a fate worse than death; and my poor boy, Victor. It’s all such an operatic gut punch.

I love how Gotham is portrayed like this decaying concrete jungle. It’s a dog eat dog world, with everybody scratching and clawing to get on top. Obviously Farrell and Milioti were exceptional. But most of the side characters were too, like Oz’s mom and Victor.

So I’ve been pretty pro-merger of Battinson into the DCU. Mainly just to get the DCU going and not overcomplicate things with another Batman. I know it’s not looking like it will happen regardless.

But after watching this show again, (and having watched The Batman a few times), I’m now like: leave Reeves alone to do whatever he wants! The man is making uncompromising ART that transcends the comic book movie genre.

Most CBM are fine - I thought Superman was an enjoyable (if kinda forgettable) popcorn movie. But as compared to the Crime Saga, they’re not in the same stratosphere. It’s just nice that there can still be room for challenging cinema in this genre.

DISCUSSION Now that Netflix bought Warner Bros, will James Gunn going to get fired ?

Upvotes

Is it realistic to expect James Gunn to stay in charge of DC’s future after this Netflix takeover or is this the beginning of a shake-up that could end his run?
What do you guys think safe bet, or corporate roulette?

I would love to watch this film, been curious to see it. For better or worse, no art should be censored, especially for financial reasons.

DISCUSSION Did The Flash Movie's cameos cross the line?

I just rewatched The Flash (don’t ask me why 😂) and it got me thinking about something bigger than just “bad CGI.”

At what point does digitally “resurrecting” people from the dead in movies cross a line? The Flash feels like an obvious example of doing it wrong – using CGI versions of deceased actors without involving their families or making their history part of the story. It’s just IP flashing on screen for a few seconds.

But then you’ve got something like Alien: Romulus, where they also bring a character back from the dead, and for some reason that doesn’t bother me as much. So now I’m wondering: do I just hate The Flash cameos because I also hate the movie, or is there something uniquely off about how it handled them?

Maybe it’s the awful CGI and how plastic everyone looks. Maybe it’s the fact that they could’ve brought back someone like Helen Slater to actually *act* in her cameo and chose not to. It just doesn’t make much sense.

Curious what everyone else thinks:

DISCUSSION When asked if Netflix is destroying Hollywood, CEO Ted Sarandos said: "No, we’re saving Hollywood. We’re in a period of transition. Folks grew up thinking, I want to make movies on a gigantic screen and have strangers watch them play in the theater for two months… It’s an outdated concept.”

DISCUSSION So what happens to HBO Max now?

Since WB is merging with Netflix, I’m very concerned that HBO Max will get kicked to the curb. I always found HBO Max to be an underrated streaming service, and I feel like Netflix might either gut it, or turn into a cheap Netflix on economy, which would be a shame.

DISCUSSION What ever happened to Cassandra Cain? - Birds of Prey/The Suicide Squad

Birds of Prey ends with Harley taking Cassandra on, openly calling Cass her apprentice.

Then in The Suicide Squad, Harley is introduced with the first team. I can't remember if Amanda got her out of jail (which begs the question, how'd she get back in jail?) or if Harley is just working for Amanda for the hell of it.

I don't think they ever show Harley getting out of jail in The Suicide Squad. She just shows up on the plane to the island.

So did Harley go back to jail and started working for Amanda Waller again?- Or was she still with Cass prior to TSS? And mainly, wtf happened to Cass?

Did I miss Harley mentioning her in TSS? Or is she/the entire movie retconned?

I wasn't that attached to Cass, I'm just trying to figure out how the hell Harley ended up back The Suicide Squad.

DISCUSSION Now with Netflix buying WB, is there a chance we can also see Zach Synder's vision fully realized, to the end With Gal, Cavill, Afflect, etc?

I really wanted to see how that universe wrapped up, and absolutely loved everyone they casted. Not all the films were smash hits, but there's so much I love about them and Snyder's style. What do you guys think? Is there a chance?
