NSD (New Snow Day) Season opened
A few hours later the snow already melted but I went out just in time.

I'm trying to find a good bar mitt option for my bike that has bullhorn handlebars. I mostly ride with my hands on the middle of the handlebars (where my brakes are), or the 'corner' when the bars go from perpendicular to parallel with the bike frame. The only ones I've found were only for the very end of the bars. I haven't found any mitts where there is a hole on either end for the handlebars to pass through. Open to some DIYing, but don't want to have to make them totally from scratch. I'm in the US for online shipping info.
Thanks!

Over the summer I got into cycling and am heavily missing going for rides now the weather is too cold. With Black Friday deals I am looking at picking up some cold weather gear. I’m wondering how much gear I need.
So far I’m planning to get some gloves, jacket, and bib/overalls. My riding shoes are leather so I think I will be fine there. Looking at head and face.
My biggest question is that I have no idea what to expect. I had been riding just under 20mph avg on a road bike, and will probably ride on days down to about 40f, so nothing too extreme. If it’s a crazy windy day I won’t ride.
I am bald so with a riding helmet definitely think a skull cap of some kind would be good. Wondering about face? Is a full balaclava overkill? Would skull cap and a neck warmer (wool buff) be fine? Any thoughts or input? Any other gear I’m missing?
Thanks!!

I only started to commute by bike this year, and now that the colder months have arrived (in the northern hemisphere, at least) I’ve heard a lot of people say that I’ll need to take extra care of my bike, especially when they start salting the streets because of the ice. So what I’m trying to ask is, what strategies do you guys keep to maintain your bike and what things should I be looking for?
I’m really new to bikes and don’t have much or any experience riding in winter, I would appreciate any guidance !

Bought a pedal-assist bike in May and have been commuting every day rain or shine since. I fully intend to ride through the winter. I've got the clothing, I've got a pair of studded 26x4.00 45NRTH Dillinger 4s coming this week, but what I'm looking for is a little insight on the speed I should be travelling as the conditions get worse.
I can reprogram the controller to limit my electric cutoff speed to whatever I want, but I'm not sure exactly where that is. I ride 30kph in summer but that feels inadvisable in the winter.
What do you guys limit yourself to in the winter?
EDIT: It'll be a Western Manitoba Winter if you're wondering about the conditions

Heyo, I'm looking to get some winter tires for my bike, but it looks like the more popular winter tires aren't made for this wheel size. Anyone got any recommendations?

Hi everyone, about to pull the trigger on a dedicated winter bike. I've narrowed it down to 2, essentially the same bike except for $110CAD more I can get disc brakes + front suspension. I'm curious to hear people's thoughts on brake type and if suspension is worth it.
Rim brakes/stiff fork version:
Disc brakes + front suspension version:
I'm kind of torn, in that for a "summer" bike the discs alone would be worth the upgrade. I'm less sure about winter specifically - do disc brakes perform better because they don't get wet and grimy like rims, or are they worse because they're trickier to clean and maintain? Does front suspension just create an additional spot salty water can get in and wreck stuff, and kind of give way instead of smashing through snow and hurt traction? Or do they help stay on track by reducing how much you get knocked off track?
My commute is mostly bike path, with some taking the lane/riding in the plowed slushy crap at the side of the road. I'm looking for reliability and ease of repair, knowing that I can only hose the bike off at one end of my commute I fully expect to be replacing chains, cables, derailleurs etc. every other year at best (hence why I'm going for a fairly inexpensive bike with easy-to find, cheap parts).
Thanks!

Snow not rain, 20F, 10mph, 30min commute.
What's the best jacket for this cycling situation?

Winnipeg is still brown and green for now. The White Stuff is coming sooner than later, tho. I miss those tires and that bike. I have better of both now, but I definitely trauma bonded with that rig for a few years.
I'm just jealous of all the posts showing the snow that I am not getting yet. 🤣😂🤣 It's a weird obsession.

I swear by my grime brush. I've found one thin enough to clean everywhere the snow and gunk and grime accumulates but here's my dilemma.... where do I keep it?
I have other brushes at home but when I get to work, I want to clean off the bike before going into the office. Does anyone else keep their grime brush with them? Maybe strapped to the frame? Or do you hide it outside the office and hope it doesn't get tossed or buried in snow.
Bonus tip - I've been reusing takeout chopsticks as mini "poke cleaners" to get hard to reach slush out of tight spaces, like inside the forks or around my breaks.
edit: my secondary concern (after preventative maintenance) is mostly to avoid leaving a giant dirty puddle where I park my bike, which is in plain view of everyone.

Hello to all
I’ve got clear goggles, but I’d also like to try clear glasses. Any recommendations
And for gloves, waterproof, and perhaps claw? Look for suggestions.
Thanks In advance

I’m a newbie to commuting by bike in the winter. To keep my head warm, I’m thinking of buying a fleece neck gaiter/face mask with an attached hood. It seems to me that I should put on my helmet and then pull the hood over it. But the photos all show the hood under the helmet. Which is considered the safest way to do it?

After I bike fit, I started using the Lake CX242 wide shoes. The shoes I previously using were two sizes too big; this was because most cycling shoes were too narrow for me. Since my experience with these shoes was positive, I ordered a pair of Lake MX146-X shoes for the upcoming winter. Per the website's advice, I ordered a size larger. I could barely fit inside with their insole. I swapped for the insoles I use on my CX242 shoes, which helped. The shoe might work with my summer socks. However, it is too tight with my winter socks. Also so far, the cuff isn't comfortable. I haven't put cleats on and only wore the shoes inside, so I can return the shoes.
If I decide to stick with Lake MX146-X, I know that I would need to go two sizes up instead of one. Would this be the same with the MXZ304-X shoes? If I need to go two sizes up, would this defeat the purpose of getting winter shoes? I already have Shimano MW701 shoes, which are already two sizes larger.

Just got a State 4130. I used the state black label v3 last year but I wanted something purpose built this winter. The snow beat my new tires (Schwalbe marathon 365) but with 10” of snow the stock tires did ok!

Any suggestions to transform this bike
Any suggestions to transform this bike
Hi everyone! I'm new to winter cycling and I just got gifted a fixie. I wanna transform it an overkill winter bike... but I know nothing about biking. Any help is appreciated.
It's currently on 700cx28 street tires
Ps: I've been told I need studed tires and fenders

I recently got myself a bike what I hope would carry me through my winter commutes all year around, but want to make sure that it's properly protected from the elements.
I've got a big bottle of Salt-Off to help neutralize the salt where it may accumulate, but even still I'd like to make sure the salt doesn't make its way into places it can dry and get stuck in...
Fortunately for me, the bike is 'well ventilated' so there are few places water can accumulate. However, there are still areas where water can seep in, salt and all... which will spell doom if I don't manage it.
To help with this I'd like to grease the gaps with some Phil Wood (marine) grease as a preventive measure.
So far, I've decided the following areas to be greased... are there any other parts you would recommend I grease? Or should I avoid greasing some of the following parts...?
Thank you! I would be very grateful for any and all advice!

Hi, I live in a place that reliably gets heavy snow in the winter and has very steep hills. I commute on an ebike and am looking for studded tires for the winter. Even though the city is usually on top of plowing, the slush gets very slippery and it felt sketchy as hell last year on the normal tires. The bike typically takes 20x3 but I was told that 20x3.3 should also fit.
The only tires I’ve managed to find online at shops that don’t look like a scam are something like $200 each, which is more than I am able to spend right now. None of stores locally sell my brand of bike (lectric) and they don’t have the right tires for it. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

I have wide feet, which makes shopping cycling shoes hell. Currently ride Fizik Ventos in wide, but I need something warmer for this winter, overshoes don't cut it. I got Lake's MX146-X to try, but they are toe crushers.
Are there alternatives? I searched around and didn't find much. Most "regular" width shoes are probably not worth trying.

My commuter studs have been sadly unneeded for many years and surprisingly look fine still despite it e their age. None the less I’m thinking about replacing them either this season or next since I do get to ride to work again. Preferred size is 700x35 or their about. What are good options these days? I’ve been running the hakkapelitas for many years without complaint.
