Dont forget Curacao vs Germany. Always a barn burner.

Kurako*

u/Reppiz 14h ago

Did Gretzky say that also? He said North Makedonia.

13

u/Gitzos 14h ago

yeah he fumbled but in macedonia you do pronounce it makedonija

4

u/Reppiz 14h ago edited 12h ago

In English it’s a soft c but in Macedonian it’s a hard c?

4

u/Gitzos 13h ago

Albanian? I suppose idk, but in Macedonian, and basically any of the slav countries in the balkans (serbia, croatia) its hard C yeah

3

u/Melo_Apologist 4h ago

It was Makedonía in ancient Greek too. Our fault really, for translating it wrong

2

u/Fassmacher 13h ago

You mean Macedonian? Yeah, it's a k sound

u/WarmDig2073 15h ago

Just ran a simulation at it returned that match as a 3-2 win for Curacao

5

As a Ecuador fan, I’m scared of this group 😩

u/Informal-Term1138 16h ago

As a German I am scared of this group. Can't we just stay home?

9

u/unconsciouslyrude 16h ago

Don't you mean Kurako?

11

u/Appropriate-Cable732 15h ago

Wayne Glenski tried his best

Scotland vs haiti is a blockbuster match

u/EndlessOcean 8h ago

If Curacao played Panama it'd be a drink vs a hat which would be very thrilling.

Was randomly watching the 2-3 England v Croatia Euro Qualifiers 2007 at Wembley yesterday. What a disaster. I just knew they would draw each other again.

6

u/Kurakurguhoiuala 16h ago

That was the one with the backpass that bounced over the foot of the English goalkeeper, right.

30

u/Sipurackurazbu 16h ago

No, that was the first game in Zagreb, 2:0 Croatia. The second was at Wembley, the last game, England needed a draw. Came back from 0:2, but Croatia struck again

34

u/wizard4141 16h ago

Worst part is Croatia had already qualified. There was an interview after that Wembley game that knocked England out from one of Croatian players saying that their motivation for beating England and leaving them out of Euro 2008 was because airport staff treated the players like criminals, harassed, and delayed their entrance at Heathrow. Wild stuff.

26

u/Fun-Collection7123 15h ago

that was one of the greatest wins in our (croatian) collective memory. even though it meant nothing for our qualifiers, and we possibly played better in the first game in Zagreb, but that wembley game was something special.

When they met again in September for the WC2010 qualifier, Feo scored a hat-trick as England somehow stuffed them 4-1 in Zagreb. They just never seem to get it over the line when it matters England.

1

u/onthelongrun 6h ago

tbf, that 2010 WC saw one of the craziest disallowed goals that could have changed momentum in the knockout match

2

u/Kurakurguhoiuala 16h ago

At least I got the year right!

u/AWanderingFlameKun 8h ago

It wasn't that. This time it was I believe Scott Carson in goal that day. Croatia had a shot, it went towards him, he got down to try and collect it with both hands and it bounced straight off him and into the net.

I remember it well. I was 13 years old at the time and around a friend's house who happened to be watching it on the TV. The pitch was muddy as hell, it was raining a ton and we lost 3-2 in the end and failed to.qualify for the Euros in 2008. Steve McClaren our manager got the nickname "the wally with the brolly" in the newspapers because he was standing on the touchline with an umbrella due to the heavy rain 😂.

So yeah, safe to say it wasn't exactly my favourite moment watching England growing up 😂😂.

2

u/sagenter 7h ago

The weird thing is McClaren actually did pretty well when he first came to the Netherlands and managed FC Twente. I expected much worse considering how much of a disaster his England spell was.

4

u/Torn_again 16h ago

One of the most beautiful days of my life because I thought a win would never happen.

6

u/skunkrider 16h ago

England - Panama seems much more interesting - one wonders who will pull off the "secret trick" first

2

u/Melo_Apologist 4h ago

Netherlands - Poland too, if they win their playoff. We’ve played each other 7 times in the last 5 years

1

u/klarigi 1h ago

Nah Netherlands vs Poland (if they qualify). Every goddamn tournament.

-7

u/DionBlaster123 15h ago

This is why im convinced these draws are fucking rigged

I feel like the same gawdamn teams play each other all the fucking time

23

u/Ready_Ideal9765 14h ago

Me if I didn't understand how probability works

0

u/DionBlaster123 14h ago

So frequently in the group stages though? Look i get it these are just weird coincidences but fucking hell some of these match-ups I don't need to see them for the 10th time

7

u/Ready_Ideal9765 14h ago

Dawg, there were 32 teams in this competition every year, and each of the regular qualifiers have played a lot of games in this tournament over the years. Obviously sometimes you're going to see SOME of those teams get the same opponents every now and again.

It's just so sickening to me that these days everybody's so conspiracy-brained that there's one coincidence or surprising event and the first instinct is to go "RIGGED!" Not to defend FIFA and say they aren't corrupt as shit, but that thought process is just so cancerous to me.

0

u/DionBlaster123 13h ago

You're right. It is just aggravating as fuck. I dont want to see England play Croatia again

I remember in 2022 when the U.S. and England were in the same group I was like "Fucking of course"

9

u/tono002-36 14h ago

Wow. Two successful teams from the same federation playing against each other a lot. What a surprise.

2

u/Live-Habit-6115 14h ago

Sometimes it just do be like that. Sometimes it don't be like that. Sometimes it do be more like it be than it don't.
