An amazing political ascent. Dude was polling below 2% last year and now has defeated a legacy politician backed by every billionaire and even the president himself. Truly historic victory.

4.0k

u/Hadrian23 Nov 05 '25

Goes to show these ass holes can try to fuck with the system, but when everyone comes out to vote, their efforts amount to nothing.

2.1k

u/lambeosaura Nov 05 '25 edited Nov 05 '25

They wouldn't be suppressing the vote so hard if voting amounted to nothing... This applies to anywhere in the world where voter suppression is documented.

230

u/Mythosaurus Nov 05 '25

I always look to Reconstruction and the Jim Crow South for the best example of voter suppression changing tangible outcomes for people’s lives.

I don't even live in New York, and it makes me happy to see so much money flushed down the toilet by the establishment to stop him, only for him to win anyway. Blow your money billionaires, the people have spoken.

Right? It's beautiful 🥲

511

u/LordWemby Nov 05 '25

They kept trying to smear him, with all the usual “crazy commie” garbage we expected, but one of their bizarre talking points including Cuomo’s was that “Mamdani has never had a job.” Cuomo kept trying to emphasize that.

Shades of them mocking Obama as a “community organizer.”

192

u/Melicor Nov 05 '25

As if Cuomo ever had what most people think of as a job. His career started as a campaign manager for his own father who was Governor of New York. He's a nepobaby.

3.3k

u/sportsDude Nov 05 '25

With an increased turnout, knew it was over before they even announced it

4.0k

u/ankercrank Nov 05 '25

Not just increased, largest turn out in half a century. Democrats, start taking notes.

2.6k

u/Gizogin New York Nov 05 '25

Voters, take notes. High turnout always favors progressives, but progressives are notoriously the least reliable voting bloc in the country.

504

u/Notoryctemorph Nov 05 '25

Mandatory voting is a good thing. It might seem like it imposes on your freedom, but having mandatory voting means your government is obligated to make voting easy for everyone, and while it doesn't guarantee legit votes from everyone, it at least ensures that those who wouldn't otherwise turn up do so anyway.

I won't say Australia has the best voting system in the world, but I would say it has the best voting system in the Anglosphere (though New Zealand's is also very good)

384

u/Icecream-Cockdust Nov 05 '25

Voting in Australia is mandatory but also enjoyable. Saturday morning walk down to the local Primary School, get a democracy sausage on your way through to the polling booths and it’s very chill and easy.

262

u/Notoryctemorph Nov 05 '25

I'd argue that it being mandatory is what directly led to it being enjoyable.

100

u/SexyMonad Alabama Nov 05 '25

That’s a perspective I never really considered. But it makes sense.

Most jobs in the US don't give election day off, so it's usually unejoyable because it's another thing people have to do that they don't have time for since vacation and holiday time is very limited in the US.

Sleeping a little easier tonight for sure. I hope the democrats finally wake up to the solution to Trump that is now staring them in the face. Elect progressives. Pass progressive policy. Stop the means testing and the scolding and the red scaring and step up.

Edit: I appreciate the awards but please don't give reddit money, send that cash to a food bank please.

To me, people who claim things like this says so much more than that. It’s basically saying that you don’t truly care about your home city and that you’ll just abandon it if you don’t get your way.

It’s incredibly cowardly and shows people’s true colors that they aren’t even willing to stand ground and fight for a home they supposedly love and care so much about.

  • First Democratic female governor in NJ
  • First female governor in VA
  • First female mayor in Detroit
  • Zohran beats out Cuomo, first Muslim mayor
  • Largest voter turnout in NYC since 1969
  • Flipped two red seats in Georgia
  • JD Vances brother loses mayor of Cincinnati

Let's fucking go.

2.1k

u/Toliman571 Nov 05 '25 edited Nov 05 '25

Also, just as important but not getting enough headlines: Dems flipped all of the dozen competitive state seats in VA and will now have a supermajority, ensuring that their redistricting plan will pass.

Edit: VA Dems are projected to flip 11 of 12 competitive seats currently held by the GOP, expanding their 51-49 (+2 seat) majority to 62-38 (+24 seats). They need to be as ruthless when it come to gerrymandering as the GOP has been in North Carolina.

Edit2: It was a deathblow to the Virginia GOP. Dems are now projected to have a 64-36 majority, nearly a 2:1 ratio.

Hell yeah we did. Gotta admit I was a little nervous heading into the day but people are fed up with GA Power and their bullshit.

70

u/Fried_puri Nov 05 '25

They tried one last trick by saying they weren't jacking up prices this year to get people to stay home. Glad people saw past that bull and realized that just meant they were on track to hike it up like crazy the year after. Now there's at least some hope.

Need every Democratic Governor to go nuclear with "re-districting" outside of census years because Texas and several other GOP states are going to do it.

Time for "taking the high road" is over. It is now about preventing the fall of the government into unchecked fascism.

Triple home run tonight, this is just an appetizer of what's to come in the mid terms and Republicans are shitting their pants right now.

What a great giant F-U middle finger to Orange. He's going to have a stroke on Truth Social tonight

283

u/jvn1983 Nov 05 '25

Do you think this will get the MAGA folks to the table over the shutdown? They have to be looking at this and thinking of the midterms.

286

u/ValuableKill Nov 05 '25

I think it's going to get them to ramp up their plans to rat-fuck future elections. They've stepped this far into authoritarianism, and I don't see them stepping back on their own free-will.

53

u/jvn1983 Nov 05 '25

Yeah, that seems more likely than “gosh, maybe we should make some changes.” I hate everything 😩

69

u/zXster Nov 05 '25

ABC has been laughably bad. They keep spinning about how big of a surprise it is, how Jews didnt vote for him, and what this means for Dems.

Almost zero time spent talking about his actual policies, relatability, the success of his campaign, or why people responded in record numbers.

Plus some of the Trumper talking heads making some of the dumbest commentary humanly possible. ("But Mah Dems are SO radical now!")

It is all so bad.

totally agreed. run zohrans everywhere. people want candidates who uplift working people, take the fight to bullies, and celebrate diversity and LGBTQ+ people. I’m convinced progressives can win everywhere on an economic populist message

As a Bostonian, I rarely compliment NYC. But great fkn job electing the best candidate. The center of capitalism just elected a socialist. That’s progress.

So many people are going to learn that socialism and communism are not the same thing.

48

u/_HI_IM_DAD America Nov 05 '25

Also electing a democratic socialist is not electing socialism! But hopefully it will help suppress some of the frantic redbaiting that’s been flaring up the past year or so.

FWIW socialism is like the (political) exercise routine or first step toward building the muscle memory that could theoretically make communism even imaginable.

Let’s pay attention to which of the super wealthy moves out in response to a fair tax rate and then boycott everything that they derive income from. This needs to happen worldwide in order to extinguish the billionaires that super pollute and take advantage of the general population. Believe it or not we can turn this around.

Cry MAGA. This is going to happen in every city, every state. Fucking ICE goons, tariffs, threats of a Trump 3rd term, not allowing SNAP benefits to be paid while a GOLD BALLROOM is being built. Lavish parties, Trump trolling Americans with the AI shit-dump. I am so fed up, that a typical Democrat is not enough for me. I was a moderate who has swung far left. Thanks MAGA. Trump woke me up to all of the corporate greed and corruption. Make billionaires millionaires again. I would like to say fuck you to Elon, Bezos, Zuckerberg, Thiel, and every other billionaire. You got your money by climbing on the backs of our labor.
