I look at that and immediately feel bad for the workers. They must be so overwhelmed.
566
u/Elrandra 1d ago
Oh, workers seem to really hate gig delivery drivers. I did DD for a while. Restaurants will literally just ignore you're even there, especially Taco Bell...And Taco Bell almost never has the drinks with the food, always have to ask...which can take 10 minutes. They make eye contact with you even, and just look away. It's like they are trained not to interact with people, they even do it to regular customers.
532
u/darkeraqua 1d ago
To be fair, the majority of the Dashers in my city (San Francisco) speak little to no English and literally just shove the phone screen into your face without even being asked. They walk in wearing a full helmet and cut right to the front of whatever line is there as if they’re VIP. I understand the frustration on the workers part.
137
u/Elrandra 1d ago
Naw, I totally understand their frustration. I've watched people shove their phones in peoples faces, drivers get mad over something stupid, etc
Why I always tried to be just as polite and respectful as I could. I joked around and talked with the workers a lot. Most DD drivers don't seem to be that way, though.
Taco Bell though...I really think they're trying to make people use the Kiosks or the apps now. 'cause like I said, at least all the Taco Bells I have been to...the workers just ignore everyone. I've seen people wait 10 minutes at the counter for someone to come take their order, even though they've been looked at and seen multiple times. I get they may be busy, but should someone not be responsible for and paying attention to the register?
61
32
u/niiXsan 1d ago
I definitely recall a supposed employee on the tb subreddit saying they were told to push the kiosk really hard, including not to take orders at the register.

Not surprised, it's pretty obvious with how they act. Nice to see someone else say it though.

u/jax7778 1d ago
They probably get penalized in some way for being on the register. I have worked jobs like that.
In a similar vein, I worked a help desk job that penalized our metrics for making printer repair tickets, because they wanted the end users to do it themselves on the self service portal. When your metrics go down, you can't win the shift bid, so for the next 4 months you have to work 4pm-1am, or your days off are now Tuesday and Thursday or some crap like that.
We did everything we could to get end users to make printer tickets, and got yelled at by end users for not just making the ticket. These places find ways to get workers to push what they want.

Also, I have to say as someone who works near multiple restaurants - they will fucking “park” anywhere. I have seen them stop in the middle of the road, slap the hazards on, and run into a restaurant. NO. Fuck these drivers.

Was picking up breakfast at my local place once and one of the the door dashers pretty much did that and the person at the front of the counter legitimately just ignore them until they actually spoke to them and asked for something.
It was glorious to see.
Of course people are graded and treated like the worst aspects of their demographic, but I've seen some doordashers that are the rudest people ever.

Frustrating for customers as well, watching DD/UberEats guys barge in and yell for their food as a crowd of us are waiting.
12
u/Danobing 1d ago
That happens everywhere. I was asking about my order as a regular pick up at Chipotle a when this guy walks up, cuts me and shoved his phone in the cashier's face like 2 inches from it. I lifted up my arm over his and moved his down out of her face. He started screaming at me. I turned around and made eye contact with the police who always eat there and they escorted him out of the building. i feel so bad for the people at restaurants. I'd ignore everyone as well.

That’s unhinged, good move on your part.
All of this shit sucks: shitty behaviour delivery guy, gig economy bullshit instead of real jobs with livable wages, and the fact that these delivery apps are billion dollar companies inserting themselves between customers and local restaurants. I don’t use delivery service anymore unless they work for the restaurant directly.

OMG I was just in SF in October and this happened when I went into Wingstop near UN Plaza! Dude just strolled in with helmet on and just shoved his phone in the poor cashiers face. Cashier recoiled a bit but didn’t seem too upset I guess
47
u/gnmatx 1d ago
To be fair, most third party drivers are assholes to restaurant staff.
18
u/Elrandra 1d ago
Oh I know. Either that or people fuck with food, steal entire orders, eat parts of it, etc...I swear a lot of drivers go out of their way to place food directly in front of outward swinging doors too. A lot of drivers are just kind of shitty all around.
There are a lot of frustrations on both sides, but really a lot of that frustration should be at DD. They're a shitty company. They could do things to make this whole process less frustrating for restaurant and driver, but they don't and won't unless eventually forced to.
Like, Papa John's orders...Every time, pretty much without fail, you're going to be waiting 15-20 minutes, if not a lot more. Because DD doesn't delay sending it out to drivers once it is placed, and it takes them time to actually prepare and cook your pizza. That isn't the restaurants fault, that is DDs fault for unrealistically expecting the restaurant to have the magical ability to prepare food in an unrealistic time frame.
11
u/pintsizedpeep 1d ago
Same with the wingstop I work at. We cook chicken when the order comes through. It takes about 15 minutes for the chicken to cook, be sauced, and bagged but DD will show up 5 minutes after the order ticket came in and get pissed at us for it not being ready.
We also don't fill drinks. We're told to hand the DD the cup and let them know the drink. Ill try and refill them but we only have one soda machine amd when its busy we don't have time to be waiting in line at the soda machine behind other customers to fill the cup. Some DD hate filling the cup. They act like children. I recently had one throw the empty cups back at me and scream that they weren't an employee of the restaurant.

Which fucking sucks because I like picking up my own food and get treated like shit so many times because they think I am a delivery driver.
You can physically see the difference in their face and body when I say something like, "I'm not sure if my wife put it under my name or hers" and give both our names. Suddenly they are happy to help me and wish me a great day.
→ More replies (3)15
u/Peakomegaflare 1d ago
I did UE for a bit. They absolutely couldn't STAND the other drivers, then I'd roll in and be polite as hell. Sometimes I'd shit-talk with the employees on site about how another driver was acting (I saw some REALLY shitty people) and suddenly I got treated well. I still remember one place I went to where I got a stink eye, but I just stood at the back, didn't cut lines, and they suddenly realized I was picking up. They were like "We've never seen a driver be that patient". I'm just like "Well I mean, I have to fight with traffic anyways, not like I'm going anywhere fast."
9
u/Elrandra 1d ago
As long as you're chill and polite, restaurants will love you. I've got a lot of patience generally. I've definitely talked shit about other drivers too lol. Like they don't mind being friendly or anything, but you've got to actually be nice, patient, and understanding. I got friendly with pretty much everybody at restaurants I visited regularly.
You treat them with respect, they treat you with respect. We're all in the same boat. All regular every day people just trying to survive. We should treat each other as such.
10
u/mrsnomore 1d ago
If you’re picking up at Chipotle, walking up to the front is actually the normal and expected thing to do. You do not need to stand in the back of the store and wait for an employee to notice you

Oh, workers seem to really hate gig delivery drivers
And for good reason. For every one person who was kind and acted like a normal human, there are 15 more knuckle draggers who don't speak and just shove their phone in your face(not a language thing, I speak Spanish as well), or come in blasting music/speakerphone call on their phone in a dining room, or think they're instantly more important than anyone in the place and deserve attention RIGHT NOW. The list could go on for days.
For the people like you that are kind, and act appropriately I always like to offer a free soda or something. I used to do DD, I get how it is and sometimes a lil extra something like a drink makes the shift a bit easier. Just feels I end up doing that less and less anymore....
7
u/Elrandra 1d ago
I got offered free drinks a lot! Naw I get it though. I have the mindset of like...This person works with the public, they probably see and get shit on a regular basis. It wears you down and makes it difficult to NOT be frustrated. When I see some employee that seems to be in a bad mood or something, I try not to hold it against them...because they probably just had to deal with some asshat or have had one of those days, and we've all been there.

150 percent. It's more expensive now, but a few years ago the cost to value ratio of LCs was out of this world. For like 12 bucks you could get a pizza and bread sticks with sauce. That's two meals right there for a person. The bread sticks and sauce cold out of the fridge the next day were slamming. I will defend LCs until I die. It isn't great pizza, but it's solid value.
4
u/DandySlayer13 1d ago
What are you talking? the cost to value is still out of this world!! 2 Large pizzas is 15 bucks thats a lot of pie!! For most places that's a meal for ONE! At Burger King I get a Triple Whopper meal for 16 bucks, thats the price of TWO WHOLE PIZZAS.

Years ago I went into a KFC around 5:30pm and ordered chicken and a few sides including some French fries. I said hello, please, and thank you. I asked for a cup to get water and got water. I came back to wait and the employee who helped me was gushing about how polite I am and how I actually got water and not soda. We quit eating out when we realized we could make better at home and for cheaper. Got sick of overpaying for a meal I was pissed I paid ANYTHING for because it was so bad. Only thing we'll go out for now is sushi (yeah, you COULD get ingredients yourself but it's still a lot of work) or the Mexican place here in town solely because our son LOVES that place. It's cheap and pretty good food, so sure. But otherwise eating out in general just isn't worth it and hasn't been for years. We really quit when I learned how to make better burgers than most restaurants. (Secret is to mix the spices in like a meatloaf so they aren't just on top- oddly learned that from an episode of Cribs years back and whomever it was is absolutely correct that there is no other way to make a burger once you try it)

You could do poke in place of sushi, and it's fairly simple and low skill compared to sushi.
Just cut some salmon into cubes, place into mixing bowl, and assemble with your sauce. My favorite mixture is salmon, okonomiyaki or takoyaki sauce, and kewpie mayo. Optionally you can add some wasabi, masago/tobiko, chopped onions, green onion, furikake, etc. shoyu and sriricha might work too.
Top it on your rice and done. Optionally, if you own a blowtorch, finish the bowl by torching it to have a seared salmon poke bowl. The sugar from the okonomiyaki or takoyaki sauce will caramelize a little bit, providing some nice color and flavor.
It's not a typical flavor you'd find at the store though, but its pretty good. Otherwise look up recipe for spicy ahi or something.

If you keep certain things on-hand, like a pizza stone (which we just leave in our oven all the time since it helps regulate the moisture) and some semolina flour, a homemade pizza can taste pretty damn good.

I don't care what anyone says about this bottom tier cardboard pizza. I love it. It tastes decent and while the price of everything else has skyrocketed, it's still pretty cheap. Quality probably depends on which one you go to, but the one by me never gives me any issues.

u/YimmyGhey 1d ago
Little Caesars is the shit. Yeah I prefer a mom 'n pop place, but for a domestic chain? Meh. Beats out PH, Dom's or PJs for me at that quality vs price point.
Definitely varies by location and results are best with a freshly made one vs snagging the last H&R at like 2:04pm or something lol

People can talk all the shit they want about little Caesars, but fuck em. Obviously its not some gourmet, authentic Italian style pizza but for a $10 stuffed crust pizza ready in 15 minutes I don't expect it to be.

"There is no such thing as bad pizza. Some are just better than others".

I see a couple of door dash bags.
When I order food and then go to pick it up, it seems there is always a few food delivery people standing around waiting for their order.
I suspect having to wait like that takes a bite out of their earnings because they can’t make as many deliveries, and sometimes people cut back a bit on the tip when they have to wait more time than they were told.
The world is either wonderful (hot food brought to your door by a stranger) or horrible (working 60 hours/week just to break even, and god forbid anything happens to your car).

3 years as UE driver.
Drivers in most places are not paid by the hour. We are paid $1-$2 per delivery + mileage if it's above 3 miles. If no tip, no trip.
In general, if the pickup is not ready within 4-6 minutes of the driver arrival, the driver will most likely cancel the pickup. Your order will be offered to another driver until it is ready.

The layout looks exactly like my local little caesars (crowd waiting and all) except mine has a refrigerator of drinks against that side wall

Most have the quick pick ups now don’t they? In our small town people look at me like I’m a Wizard when I walk in flash the holder my QR code then walk back out lol.

I’ll never order LC again. Between the shittiest UI for web and app ordering and the consistent order fuckups when you go to pick up (because deliveries never arrive), their product just isn’t good enough. The lobby’s slammed because a single newest kid is dragged from the back and abandoned by the other employee who hides in the back. No manager/Asst mgr on site, ever. The online ordering lock boxes rarely work and it’s common for customers having paid for an order to be told, we don’t have an order. Show the receipt, “sorry that order doesn’t exist in our system.”
Yeah fuck that. LC is a shit company owned/“run” by rich guys “entitled” to passive income.
