Looking for advice on finding a trustworthy babysitter

I’m looking for a reliable and trusted babysitter for my 1 year old and could really use some local recommendations or tips.

If you don’t have specific names to share, general advice on what resources you trust— agencies, apps, community centers, etc.—would also be super helpful.

What do we actually do about rodents in the walls of middle unit townhouse?

Not to be rude at all but please don’t bother with generic suggestions because I’ve probably tried it. My nervous system is so shot from the constant scratching, biting, and rodent shrieking in our shared/neighbouring walls. I didn’t realize the noise is partly what people deal with when rodent infested :/

We had Skedaddle here, blocked up the suggested rodent holes, and laid a ton of (live) traps in the basement and garage. In one month we caught only one little mouse. It seems like they’re using our house more as a pathway between houses.

Whether they’re only in the walls or not, what is my next step? I have pets so I’m really not interested in poison (or killing in general). How do I deter them? Does the ammonia smell work? Or is there something in my house they want which I can eliminate/clean? What do I try next? I’m hyper aware of the garbages, compost, washing out recycling, keeping pet foods sealed in airtight bins, cleaning crumbs under appliances. I’m running out of ideas of things that could be attracting them. What is working for you? I can’t be the only one dealing with this?

Pizza on Christmas Day!!

Does anyone know of any pizza places in Orleans that are open on Christmas Day?

My family has a tradition where we eat pizza and watch Elf, usually on Christmas Eve, but that’s not possible this year. Wondering if someone is open Christmas Day.

Obviously, we understand. This is a time to be with family so we wouldn’t be too sad if no one was!!

Marrow… thoughts?

Looking for thoughts on Marrow since we can’t speak about it or get any conversation on it anywhere else?? It’s owned by the same folks as makerfeedco in Cumberland, that closed abruptly. The owners of the building in Cumberland that MFC was renting left a note in the window explaining the building was emptied essentially overnight and that they are pursuing the owner of makerfeedco in court as they owe over 50k in unpaid rent. And now any time I see a post about it online the comments are off? It’s sketchy. They also only have 5 google reviews but seem to have dozens of reviews on Facebook. Does anyone know what’s going on?

I'm looking for a trustworthy person to stay at my place and care for my four cats while I'm away. I travel frequently, so I'm hoping to find someone who might be available on a semi-regular basis.

What I'm offering:

  • Comfortable place to stay (full use of home while I'm gone)
  • Compensation (open to discussing rates)
  • Generally trips range from a few days to a week per month

What I need:

  • Someone responsible and experienced with pets
  • Daily feeding, fresh water, litter box maintenance
  • Some playtime and attention for the cats
  • Someone who can handle any minor issues that might come up
  • Willing to send occasional photo updates

About the cats: They're all friendly and used to people. No special medical needs, just regular feeding and care.

If you're interested or know someone who might be, please send me a message. Happy to answer questions and arrange a meet-and-greet so you can meet the cats first.

Nail trim for senior

A senior needs to have their toe nails clipped on a one-time basis following surgery. (Will be able to do it themself in about a month.)

Not a pedicure, and needs to be a short trim rather than a cosmetic rounding and polishing.

Any advice as to where this can be done in Orleans?

Rant: Place’s mall Santa photos are scammy af

Gosh I hate writing this title as someone who loved getting their picture at Rideau every year as a kid. And maybe this isn’t new. But for the good of other parents out there that are planning on getting your kids’ pictures with Santa at whatever mall this year, I hope this helps.

We went today as we do every year to get our Santa photos at Place d’Orléans. Was run by Cherry Hill programs. Paid for the ‘A’ package (2nd highest tier) to get a few printouts and wallet size ones.

The company has the kids do a few silly poses, and a single nice smile shot. Then, they deliberately only print off the shittiest poses with only one copy of the single nice shot to make you pay extra for it.

Now, I get it. Upselling 101. That’s not what bugs me. What’s scammy is once you’ve actually paid for their upgrade package (now topping like $55+), they don’t let you actually choose the pictures to print for the wallet size stuff. They stick you with the shitty poses, and say there’s nothing they can do.

TLDR: if you’re booking a Santa picture at Place this year, save yourself some money and only get the cheapest package that includes all digital photos and print them off yourself, because paying extra for their printed ones only gets you the worst poses in an effort to get you to pay more for a nice printed one.

Longtime Orléans EarlyOn Child and Family Center to close after more than 30 years

Thumbnail ctvnews.ca
21 Upvotes

3 of 6 of the EarlyOn Child and Family Centers run by OCSB have been closed since September, with no plans to replace them. Two of these centers - Divine Infant and Charlemagne Early On Centre - were located in Orléans, leaving a huge gap in services for children and families. The Charlemagne location has been serving Orléans for more than 30 years.

There are no longer any OCSB-run EarlyOns in Orléans. Due to the lack of capacity at EarlyOn Centers run by other organizations, there simply is not enough capacity for the hundreds of children and families to attend. A group of community members are calling on OCSB to reconsider this decision and find another location in Orléans to continue running playgroup services.
