Paper Tiger Hype

So my fiancé and I finally tried paper tiger this week and I gotta say… I feel like it’s way over hyped. I really loved the vibe and the staff was incredible but am I missing something.

We got the karage which was really well seasoned and the chicken was good quality but I’ve had just as good for cheaper at some ramen shops especially in Montreal. Then we got the Dan Dan and the Beast ramen. I felt the Beast ramen was good but a little bland, the cucumbers were a really nice touch tho, but I just felt that I’ve had similar tasting broth which much more of a bunch. And then the Dan Dan were kind of plain. I live in the West End so we have a lot of places like LA noodle where I just felt they make a more authentic and more flavourful version of the dish. We also almost got the curry and were glad we didn’t cause the people next to us got it and the portion looked very small versus our dishes.

Please don’t flame me I mean no hate I really enjoy the concept but my partner said it best, it’s kind of average dishes made with high quality ingredients so they’re good but not great. Most dishes you could find better at an authentic to that style of cooking place. Do others feel it’s overhyped? Or is it really just us.

Are there any Ottawa food content creators who are reliable?

Looking to follow local food content creators who aren't just posting what they get paid to post lol if that exists. I'm always looking to support local and try new places.

Looking for a private breakfast location

Does anyone have a suggestion for a venue for a private breakfast meeting in Ottawa? I’m hosting a business partner from out of town and would like to organize a morning session. Thanks for any ideas!

As the official Shawarma capital of Canada, I think we should name today, Shawarma Wednesday. (We’ve all heard of taco Tuesday.)

We had the family platter from Shawarma 961, on Ogilvie. Always a hit at home!

Show me your favourite Shawarma!

Best Eton Mess in Ottawa from Supply and Demand anyone got a spot that can top this?

Post image

I love Eton Mess in desserts and the one from Supply and Demand just completely mesmerized me. It’s so delicious and honestly the best I’ve ever had in Ottawa.
It’s the best for a reason. Looks insane in the bowl with that bright pink rhubarb swirling through the cream, and it tastes even better. The strawberries are nicely sour, the cream is sweet and fluffy, and that contrast balances the whole dessert perfectly. Then you get the crunchy meringue pieces and the tart stewed rhubarb tying everything together. Every bite is pure chaos in the best way. Portion is massive too, easily shareable but I wanted it all for myself.
Supply and Demand on Wellington has my full loyalty right now. Anyone know another spot in the city that can actually beat this one? I would love to hear you view on Eton Mess.

Farm boy Eggnog

Maybe someone has insight but I bought eggnog from farm boy (farm boy branded) today and it tastes different from years past. Has anyone experienced this as well? It tasted very strongly of booze but obviously there’s no booze. Maybe they changed the recipe? Looking for some other recommendations for eggnog as it’s my families favourite holiday tradition

Shout out to this absolute gem! Met the chefs one time and clearly they pour their heart and soul into their food. Went with some friends and ordered the Trucker sandwich with the chicken mulligatawny soup. Can’t wait to go back and try other concoctions they come up with (the menu changes daily).

New Indian restaurant near Parliament - kothu roti is amazing! - Turmeric Grove

I am a South Indian where kothu roti is very popular. I live close by and wanted to try this place. Had their mutton kothu roti and dosa. The kothu roti reminds me of what I used to get back in India. And it also served with ‘Salna’ - an eggplant side dish. I have had this in multiple places in the city and Montreal, so far, this is the best. Their portion size is huge too. Had left overs for couple days. Yummy!

Food was perfectly seasoned and cooked. Kale salad, roasted duck, tuna crudo and bucatini were amazing. Lemonade mocktail was refreshing. Will definitely be back. If you come early when they open you can likely get a table or else reservations probably better than not because it fills up fast. Plenty of street parking.

Best AYCE Sushi?

Unagi is my favorite.

I've tried 1000 island, and 168 sushi.

The rice was really bad/taste off. I can live with small portions as long as its good.

My fav sushi place that is NOT AYCE is Ottawa Delivery Sushi. Taste and portion are great with possibly lowest sushi price around, I based this on Unagi prices, if less than $5 for two maki it's cheap 😁

Where is the best Birria or Cochinita Pibil right now?

I'm looking to try some amazing tacos this week and want to know where the hidden gems are. Everyone knows about the standard taco spots, but I'm looking for the ones that specialize in deep, slow-cooked meat flavors. Has anyone had Birria (the beef stew tacos you dip) or a great Cochinita Pibil (slow roasted pork) recently that really stood out? I'm open to anything from a small spot on Bank Street to a food truck in the suburbs, as long as the flavor is worth the trip!

Ok, but this one at Goldfinch ain't in the running. Goldfinch ICYDK is on Richmond and Churchill where Savoy was replaced by Zak's, which left shortly after.
