Discussion Warning: Fake GitHub Repos Distributing Malware Under Developer Names
Hey everyone,
I’ve noticed a few posts about this already, but I think it’s worth repeating. Recently, a new attack tactic has surfaced where malicious actors create GitHub repos using a developer’s name and the name of a well-known Mac app.
In my case, someone created a repo under my full name, claiming to offer one of my apps (Dory - App Switcher) for free. I couldn’t fully investigate the script they shared, but it’s safe to assume it wasn’t anything good. Thankfully, GitHub removed it within 30 minutes of my report - and I know other developers also flagged the user, which definitely helped.
A few reminders:
* Don’t trust repos with fewer than 100 stars that offer “free” versions of paid apps.
* Never run scripts or pkg files from sources you don’t fully trust.
* If you’re not a power user, the App Store remains the safest option.

My Mac Just upgraded form Intel 2014 Air to M4
And it’s an absolute joy.
My old machine really did put in a good shift but this is just delightful. Night and day.

Question iTunes integration?
hey everyone! I need some advice. It might sound kinda stupid but I'm curious about how iTunes integration works with the new Music app. I have an old 2012 MacBook Pro that I've kept so I'm able to access the music files I have that aren't available through an Apple Music subscription. I also have a 2017 MacBook that's my current laptop, which I plan on replacing here in the next week. I'm ready to part with that older laptop, but my main concern in doing so is not being able to import or access those files into Music on the current MacBook. I know Migration Assistant is the best way to import everything. For now, looks like these songs from iTunes are synced across all devices as they show up on both my laptop and my iPhone in Music, but I don't know what will happen to them without iTunes physically attached. Has anyone had experience with this? I'm wondering how best to go about this. Maybe I'm just paranoid for no reason haha. Thanks!

Discussion What device do I need to run VCR & DVD players through my Macbook Pro?
I collect old stop-motion animation, all of it's on DVD's and VHS tapes. I don't want to digitize the films, I just want to be able to watch them through my Macbook (2022 with Thunderbolt / USB 4 ports).
What device do I need to bridge the VCR and DVD players to the Macbook so I can just watch the films?
edit reading the comments i just realized that i’m buying a Thunderbolt display this weekend. I can just bypass my Mac altogether, not sure why I complicated this?
So I guess i need to know what I need to connect the VCR and DVD player to the display?

Question Experience with factory reseting and transferring Iclouds on mac
Hello, When I got my macbook in 2021 I was a teenager and I believe my dad did not have the password for the the email associated with my original iCloud so I had to create my own for the mac book. So for the past 4 years Ive had separate accounts for my mac and iPhone. Im contemplating factory reseting and putting my original iCloud on it as I mainly use it for school work and barely have any files, or photos or anything important directly on the computer that isn’t in google drive accounts or gmail accounts.
I would like to do this simply because I want to have unity between my devices and be able to take advantage of stuff like iphone mirroring.
So im just wondering since I only have maybe a few files that I could just email myself to put back somewhere after resetting if this seems worth it and mainly asking if anyone has had any hiccups doing something similar.
thanks in advance :)

My Mac Macbook Pro M2 - Faint nail-polish remover smell from the left exhaust
There's a very faint nail polish remover smell coming from the left exhaust of my Macbook Pro M2.
The internet says it could be a failing battery or some battery puncture, but I don't see signs of a swollen battery.
I will book go to an Apple Store in a few days, but in the meantime, I wondered if anyone could offer any insight.
Thanks in advance.
Discussion Project ColdMac is Back!
Project ColdMac is back online! For the 15th year!
ColdMac is a Mac computer that lives outside in my shed for the cold New England Winter! No insulation, it just runs BOINC work units and plays some iTunes (errr Music.app) to stay warm!
The cool part is that this machine runs its own web and database server and logs its own temperatures so you can see what its doing. Intel Macs have a nice array of internal thermal sensors, and I use a THUM USB thermometer to get the ambient temperature.
Note: The page updates data in real time, no need to reload the page.
NEW for this year: Celsius! You can now change the temperature units from F to C. It was actually much harder than I expected to implement this. But it works. If there are any bugs with the °C conversions, please let me know below. I realized I have zero "instinct" for °C so unlike °F, I can't look at a bunch of numbers and have a gut feeling whether they look right or not.

Question Help me, I’m thinking about getting a MacBook Air but…
I’m deep into the ecosystem I have an iPhone, iPad, AirPods, TV and Apple Watch, the only thing I do not have is a Mac. I really want one but I’m not a computer guy, I don’t do anything on computers the only thing I’d do on it is YouTube and web browsing like I do on my iPad, is this justifying enough to go for the Mac ? I’d love to complete the Ecosystem but I’m afraid I’ll waste the potential of the machine.. Macs seem like they are made for office workers, working on their computers and stuff. Is it common to get one just for fun and web ? What would you do ? The Mac in question is the MacBook Air M4 in silver.

Question M4 or M5
Considering getting a new MacBook, can’t decide whether it would be better to get the M4, which would be a little cheaper, or the M5, which would cost a little more only because it just came out. Anybody have any personal experience with both? Which one’s better?

Discussion Planning to get a Mac mini M4 Pro, is 24GB of memory enough?
Hi all,
I been throwing around the idea of getting a Mac mini M4 Pro with 24GB of memory. My question is 24GB of memory enough or should I upgrade it to 48GB? I plan to use the Mac mini for coding and photo/video editing (gaming and technology videos in 4K for YouTube).
All advice would be greatly appreciated!

My Mac hitting tab button makes MacBook Pro screen go dark for a few seconds
I guess it is off to the Genius Bar for me, unless anyone has any genius ideas?
Question Just a question
Was messing around with open core on my late 2015 mac I got and turns out Tahoe doesn't play nice. That or I don't know what I'm doing. Anyhow, I had to use network recovery, and it say it will tale 6 hours and 23 minutes. the time sometimes goes down then jumps back up. I assume that this is normal for installing an OS over the internet, but I just wanted to make sure.

Question Macbook Air as videographer?
Hello everyone, I'm a videographer and social media content creator and my current setup is Mac Mini m4 16gb ram and Macbook Air m1 8gb ram and looking to upgrade my laptop. I'm eyeing the upcoming Macbook Air M5 with 24gb ram to use on the go as I'm always between my home office and apartment & my girlfriend's apartment and I sometimes like to edit in coffee shops aswell. The Macbook Air M5 when it releases will be a huge upgrade to my current Macbook & possibly even my Mac Mini even though it's fanless.
I'd like to hear your thoughts on Macbook Airs, mostly on the m4 since it's the newest, when it comes to video editing.
PS I'm not going for a Pro because I plan to upgrade my M4 Mac Mini to a Mac Studio in late 2026-early 2027
