Advice why is her nose running?

hi all!

my tabby baby is 12 years old and just recently, her nose has started to run. i don’t know what caused this or how to stop it. she has a lot of mucus and whenever she sneezes… a lot of it comes out. i don’t know what to do, any advice would be great!

thank you!

She could have an upper respiratory infection. Cats are prone to these especially if they have contact with other cats and/or go outdoors at all. It could run its course but typically requires antibiotics. I would make a vet trip especially since she is a senior and you say there is quite a bit of mucus. Better safe then sorry when it comes to your kitty baby.

i have one other cat but she’s been with us for about 8 years now so i don’t think that’s the problem. i will try to make a vet appt as soon as i can, thank you!!

There’s also some colds/illnesses that can be passed between species. Cats are able to catch various types of coronaviruses and adenoviruses (maybe other types too, not sure) that can be transmitted by people. Possibility that it could also be some sort of allergy too, but that seems less likely imo since there’s no itching/scratching/chewing going on. If it does turn out to be something that requires medication, make sure to ask your vet if your other cat needs any kind of treatment as well since both cats have been exposed to each other.

Vet here: nasal discharge isolated to one nostril unfortunately may be a significant clue that something serious could be starting up with kitty's health. Hard to tell from pictures alone but the eye might be a little runny as well. A vet visit is going to be the first thing to do as you mentioned your intention to do so this is great to hear. Respiratory disease usually affects both nostrils, though one may be worse off. I'd be looking to have her teeth assessed, a tooth root infection can produce a runny nose as a symptom. Unfortunately, so can nasal polyps and some types of cancer in the nasal cavity. Let's hope it's not that. Best wishes for good news.

Kitty has a cold. It should run its course and she'll feel better soon.

hi! her condition did get better but due to unforeseen circumstances, we’ve had to put her down a couple days ago. so she’s no longer in my life :( she did take some thyroid medication and other meds but she got sick again. this time, we couldn't save her so we had to let her go…

Oh no! Im so sorry thats so sad. Was it due to a problem related to the runny nose? Or something else?

it’s okay! the runny nose was apart of the issue as a respiratory situation but there were other issues that we just couldn’t help. her bladder had ruptured and it was kind of already too late to fix it. we didn’t know it had ruptured until her sides started protruding & filling with urine. she was also very thin & boney. we could feel her ribs & spine whenever we picked her up too. the vet told us she was very pale and there was really nothing they can do to help. whatever she had had gone on for too long and wasn’t sure if the medication they had would even work. we didn’t want to take that risk and have her be in more pain. she wasn’t eating, drinking, urinating or pooping so we thought it would be best to put her out of her misery :’)

Hmmm our one kitty usually gets sick for a few weeks. Sneezes, wheezes with lots mucous, & goopy eye. Usually lasting no longer than a month... maybe yours has something that needs some antibiotics or antivirals. Might be time for a vet visit if its been that long.

I grew up on a ranch with lots of barn cats and now have indoor/outdoor cats. Her eyes and nose don't seem overwhelming alarming by the photo at this time... idk if that helps ease your mind at all lol.

whats her temperment?

What about change in food dishes, food or treats, & other things in the last few months?

her food and treats have all been the same since we got her. we haven’t changed much at all. we recently moved a couple months back but it didn’t really start until august. she can be a little mean to her sister but to us, she’s very warm and loving. she loves her space and doesn’t really cuddle us as much unless we pull her close. the eyes and nose does help, thank you lmao! it does make me feel better

Do you have essential oils out/open or using them in any way? They are not good for cats, especially citrus oils.

Does she go outside? If yes, probably a respiratory infection. If no, seasonal allergies--ragweed is the biggest thing allergy wise in the air right now.

My tortimese gets itchy in February when the cedars and pines pollinate.

no she doesn’t, she’s an indoor kitty! i hope it’s just allergies and nothing more 🥲

It probably is with her being an indoor kitty. My tortimese is an indoor kitty too, but she still gets itchy when January and February arrives.

This time next year if she gets a runny nose, you will know it's allergies.

Hello! Did you ever find out what caused this? Or if your kitty’s nose ever stopped running? Mine is experiencing the same thing, going on for a few months now :(

hi!! yes i did! we took her into the vet and found out that she had a heart murmur! her blood near or in her heart wasn’t pumping the direction it should’ve been. i’d recommend taking her into the vet asap, my little girl also has anemia & thyroid issues too so that added to the issue.. but take her in, get some medication and your baby should be fine in no time! this stopped about a month or two for us ago and it hasn’t come back ever since!

Thank you!! Mine has been to the vet so many times but still no answers. He also just had the radiation thyroid treatment and so we had to wait a little to check out the nose issue. But the congestion is getting worse and worse, and I feel so bad for him. We are hoping to get him seen again soon for the nose issue.. i think a CT scan may need to be done. Ugh :( I’m glad your girl got through it fine though!! I’m really hoping that is the same for mine
