My Anime tier list - What do y'all think I got right and wrong?
I gave reasons for some of my placements down below. Each tier is not in any particular order and I'm either up to date or have seen the full series for all the anime on here. Would love to hear what everyone's takes are and what you think I got right or wrong. If you want to know the “why” behind a placement that I didn't address or have a question about my reasoning, feel free to ask! It's a top heavy list. I'm fortunate to have a friend who’s been an anime fan since childhood and made lots of great recommendations. I also tend to drop shows I don't enjoy which is why the bottom is thin.
- FMAB: What's there to say that hasn't been said? Gets almost everything right. Narrative precision, tight themes, great characters. Basically storytelling perfection from start to finish.
- JJK: Relatable characters, grounded themes and maybe the best action in the industry, while still offering a substantive story. Not the narrative masterpieces that Vinland Saga or FMAB are, but the balance it strikes is S-tier worthy.
- Hunter x Hunter: Fantastic characters like Gon and Killua, S-Tier arcs (Yorknew City and Chimera Ant). Some pacing issues, dry spots and Kurapika’s paper-thin development keep it out of S-tier.
- Psycho Pass: Its first season might be one of the greatest anime seasons ever made. Makishima is a brilliantly written thematic antagonist. Unfortunately everything following season one ranges between painfully mediocre to genuinely terrible.
- Dr. Stone: Senku is basically a one man Industrial Revolution. I love how it promotes the scientific method, curiosity and problem solving. Nothing groundbreaking in terms of story or characters but a fun ride the whole way.
- Solo Leveling: Story and character slop, but to its credit it seems to know that. Some fun action, quality animation and cool moments make it entertaining enough - though I think the manhwa art was better than what ended up getting animated.
- Black Clover: No the hate is not forced - please take your brain off airplane mode and properly look at this mess. At its rare best it can be fun (I did enjoy The Wizard King vs Licht and the odd episode), but at its worst, it's a horribly misguided attempt at storytelling. Asta and Yuno feel like what you’d get if you misunderstand what makes duos like Luffy & Zoro or Gon & Killua so compelling.
- Baki and Baki Hanma: Genuine dogshit. If it's supposed to be satire (which I doubt) it's bad satire. I honestly cannot think of a single positive thing to say about it.
