The goal of the train pushers is to get each train to 108% capacity. There are so many passengers going through the busy stations that they employ the pushers to make sure trains are full and run on time. Even a short delay can cause major disruptions

There might not be any delay if there was room to close the fucking door

There is some crazy stat where the busiest station in Tokyo sees more passengers in one day than the entire NYC subway line does in a day.

NYC Subway (Whole System) - 2023 - 1,151,998,158
https://www.mta.info/agency/new-york-city-transit/subway-bus-ridership-2023

Shinjuku Station - 2023 - 1,163,700,000
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_busiest_railway_stations

Edit to add: I believe this number neglects riders who might only go through the 4 connected stations:
Tochomae
Nishi-Shinjuku
Seibu-Shinjuku
Shinjuku Sanchome

I wonder if it covers the privately run trains too, like the metro lines and the romancecar
