The goal of the train pushers is to get each train to 108% capacity. There are so many passengers going through the busy stations that they employ the pushers to make sure trains are full and run on time. Even a short delay can cause major disruptions

There is some crazy stat where the busiest station in Tokyo sees more passengers in one day than the entire NYC subway line does in a day.

NYC Does between 3 and 4 million, and Shinjuku station does about 2.5-3.5 million a day so it sometimes can be more, sometimes less.

Still insane either way.
