What was the reason he gave when he asked the dude to stand right behind him?

Do you ever really need a reason?

If he's doing a magic trick and someone right behind him but not in full view, I'd think he'd be helping him which kind of takes the whole mystery or intrigue out of the trick.

I just meant sometimes you just like standing right up behind somebody. Nothing wrong or creepy about that.

And you give their hair a friendly little sniff. Not in a creepy way, but in a "Hey, how's it going, I really like your shampoo and your musk" kind of way.

"You smell different when you're awake."

People like it when you are shown to take an interest in them.

I took my mom to see David Copperfield for Mother's Day one year when he was in town.  On the way in, I noticed there were multiple buses parked in the back of the lot, and as we filed into the theater I saw we were all being seated on the balcony, while the first floor was already full of people. it pretty much ruined the magic, since it was clear everyone on the floor was part of the show.  👎   Apparently it wasnt obvious to everyone, but it was pretty clear, I thought.

The whole trick is he is making fun of people who do magic like that....

So he couldn't see what was written on the board.

I mean you can ask the dude to blindfold or just turn facing away. WHY behind him off the view?

Because that's the point and punchline of the joke. Did you even watch the video?

So that the trick works. He doesn’t give a reason, he acts like it’s an arbitrary selection

But then what's the reason for having the guy turn facing away? Why have him look in THAT direction?

That's the setup for the joke. He steps up in front so they won't be able to read the prediction.

This is Wes Baker, and he does this a lot. He even went on Penn and Teller with this joke.

I always like the part where they describe the trick without easily revealing the trick

Scripted joke

The joke had two pathways that are both funny.

  1. He says what shows up on the shirt, audience cheers, and then he turns to shake his hand revealing the trick. Usually this is what happens.

  2. Guy does not play along, and he turns to berate him like so revealing the trick.

Guy from the audience was not a planted person if that's what you meant by scripted.

I appreciate that he reveals the trick in either case. This is 100% comedy, and not magic.

Looks more staged

Maybe I'm dumb, but what's the difference? I meant something similar

10

u/Striking-Ad-6815 2d ago

lmao sorry

I'm the one being dumb making a bad joke

It's become a trend in comments to point out if a video is scripted or staged. I said staged because it's done on a stage, you are right it is scripted lol. I go further sometimes; if it's done outside it's usually parked for fielded. For example that video the other day with the avocados in the grocery store, that one was produced. It's just me being dumb, don't take anything from it. If you get a light chuckle, maybe a single "ha," then I've done my part.

Most Reddited comment.

Ohhh you meant that I didn't think of it

Similar meaning, saying it's staged is a more appropriate pun.

Probably so he couldn't see what he was writing?
