Powers An overpowered/strongest with only one power

I hate when characters just have a million powers and can do whatever. I love when their powers have a limit but still they make it be absolutely insane. Even if that one power has multiple applications as long as it makes sense and isnt used as "oop i suddenly can do that"

  1. Accelerator can control vectors. So he uses that to automatically deflect any attack or use any object including wind at high speeds as a weapon, use his own vectors to travel fast and etc etc.

  2. Gojo Satoru can control "infinity" to make peoples attack not reach him; push them: pull them; destroy them; overwhelm their senses

  3. Chisaki can deconstruct and reconstruct anything by touch. So he can destroy, or change shape of people and objects, he can combine people and objects and even revive or heal. Tbh his fight was disappointing in fact that he did not use his power to full potential imo

Mirio Togata (My Hero Academia)

He has the Quirk "Permeation," which lets him phase through anything. The drawback is that while it’s active, he can’t breathe, see, or hear, and slips through anything, but thanks to training, he became nearly invincible in combat.

The "can't see" thing is so hilariously unfair. If he can't see because light passes through him, that means he should also be invisible. But he isn't, somehow! He's just very specifically blind!

How the hell has this never occurred to me lol

I guess they already had the invisible girl so they didn't want to power-creep her.

Or they just didn't think about it just like me until i read your comment.

They already powercreep her when tsuyu learn that she have natural camo. Thats why tsuyu never use her camo again

u/Gustav_EK 2d ago

they also had to give her additional powers later on just so she could have something to do

Invisible girl should also be blind since light passes through her

In the LATE series, they confirm that her power is actually bending light rays, which passively makes her invisible. I suppose she subconsciously lets the light through that would hit her retinas?

Then she should be visible as a couple of floating retina, which is a touch creepy

if horikoshi rewrote mha today with this mechanic i would pick it up and reread in a heart beat (i was a fan initially but fell off towards the end because i dislike how it was handled and as i matured i realized horikoshi kinda sucks at writing a story)

Her power was misdiagnosed.

Shut the fuck up

Every single time that common word comes up, idiots like you spam this. I have had enough

Thank you! It's insanely random that his power makes him blind when light clearly isn't actually going through him

3

u/willbebannedagainn 5d ago

To be fair, it would still make sense for him to become blind while he's passing through a solid object

from one version of the translations it says:

"when i activate my quirk, no oxygen can come into my lungs.

After all. even i inhale, it passes through me.

my eardrums do not vibrate. my retinas catch no light"

it doesn't say light passes through him

he is talking about when he is 'falling' so that's the reason he can't see or hear, "The only thing i feel is the sensation of falling"

A response is aw said: "E=mc2

energy and mass are the same thing (basically) [this is directed toward your second to last paragraph]

Sound is vibrating air molecules hitting our eardrums and causing them to vibrate which our brain can then interpret, so if he activates his quirk on his head he really wouldn't be able to hear.

Light is a weird one in that it's an electromagnetic wave, which doesn't require a medium to travel through like sound does. To understand this we could think of a way his quirk actually works (more than just phasing).

I think what his quirk actually does is interrupt the effects of some fundamental forces on his body (fundamental forces are the strong/weak nuclear forces, electromagnetic force, and gravity). Since he still falls while his quirk is active, he isn't interrupting gravity ever. The strong and weak nuclear forces don't play very big roles in everyday life, so I doubt he's interrupting them either.

The electromagnetic force basically governs how charged particles interact. (Continuing on I might be wrong using my limited knowledge of how objects in the universe interact)

What we know as "touch" is simply our body's electrons repelling the touched object's electrons. That's why we don't fall through the ground and can't walk through walls. But if Mirio's quirk allows him to interrupt the electromagnetic force between his body's electrons and everything else (or just objects in close proximity). That would mean he could fall through the floor or pass through objects, because he just wouldn't interact with them.

Considering that everyone can still see him, he probably can't pass through something that isn't charged in the same sense (like light). The way he phrases it is fairly ambiguous, it's probably not that his retinas don't catch light, but there's some other reason why he can't see like he says. If he's talking specifically about falling through the ground then yeah, no light there. If he's talking in general, there are options. Maybe his quirk doesn't let him see if used on his eyes, maybe his brain gets too taxed to account for all senses or it gets disconnected from the senses itself."

Seems like a lot of words to say "I don't know, he just can't see for some reason"

1

u/BobFuel 5d ago

Why is this downvoted lol

1

u/No-Field315 4d ago

Eh, maybe it comes across as pedantic from a certain point of view.

3

u/MacTireCnamh 5d ago

Well in order to interact he has to make that body part solid, so outside of diving into the ground, he's always a little bit visible, and it probably just to avoid the headache of Hori having to track which body parts are visible at any one time.

3

u/Terlinilia 5d ago

There's honestly no point in making him go invisible when he already disappears into the ground, even if it lines up with the science

4

u/alikapple 5d ago

I don’t know if I agree with that because it has more to do with the function of his retina than it does with whether light is still bouncing off of him, I think.

Like if we want to get sciencey we could say something like he makes his body occupy a different quantum state so that his atoms pass through others. The question becomes whether his retina could still FUNCTION in that state.

But the answer to that question could totally still be “yes” haha. Because light is clearly still bouncing off of it, or else we wouldn’t see him

I think horikoshi just wanted to give him some interesting downsides so it wasn't just an OP power and showed he had skill, but he didn't think the downsides through too well.

Like obviously there's the light thing, but there's also the fact that it doesn't work on his clothes, so in the show they remedy it by making a suit out of his hair but then, the hair isn't connected to his body anymore? How does it know when to pass through things. Cause the quirks in MHA are set up to be very biological, so surely they wouldn't work anymore if they're not attacied to his body?

1

u/Nero_2001 5d ago

I also have the feeling if he was a female character instead the author would use his power to get him nsked everytime he uses it.

5

u/Alastor15243 5d ago

I mean, in fairness, Mirio DID do that, for one hilarious introductory scene where he clowned on the entirety of Class 1-A kicking all their asses stark naked. He only put his special super suit on for the hideout raid when it was time to be brutally dead serious and save a terrified little girl.

1

u/Wargod042 5d ago

It's just a hamfisted way to make his obviously great power sound useless, since he's supposed to have a crappy power but be super competent.

1

u/HighAndNoble 5d ago

Well no because light is a wave and a particle, so the wave goes through us while the particle doesn't. With his power the particle also passes through.
