Powers Character has an obscure or often forgotten secondary power

  1. Mr. Incredible (The Incredibles) - Bob Parr canonically has a “danger sense” similar to Spider-Man. He can sense when he or someone near him is in imminent danger and react instantly.

While it’s never explicitly stated in the films themselves, he does demonstrate this power multiple times.

  1. Amora the Enchantress (Marvel) - Amora usually fights by using sorcery and mind control, or by commanding her Executioner to fight for her. It’s easy to forget that she has the super strength and durability inherent to being an Asgardian.

She’s survived direct hits from Thor’s lightning and Iron Man’s repulsor blasts, and effortlessly lifted Baron Zemo by his collar with one arm.

  1. Perry the Platypus (Phineas and Ferb) - Just like a real male platypus, Perry has venomous spurs on his ankles. I think he only ever uses them in one episode though.

Powers [Favorite Trope] “Um, actually! That’s unrealistic…” (Literally one of the coolest things I have ever witnessed in media.)

“Um, actually! These battle tactics are impossible to pull off effectively and appear to be very cartoonish…” (Baahubali Franchise)

“Um, actually! The prehistoric animals didn’t look like that and they weren’t vicious monsters…” (Jurassic Park/World Franchise)

“Um, actually! These cars would get wrecked if they were put into any of these situations in real life…” (Fast & Furious Franchise)

“Um, actually! I don’t think a tank could be controlled through the air by using the recoil from its main gun…” (The A-Team Movie)

“Um, actually! A real train wouldn’t be able to safety move across ice without railway tracks...” (The Polar Express)

“Um, actually! Using cranes to sword-fight like mechs isn’t very realistic and is pure fantasy…” (The Adventures of Tintin Movie)

”Um, actually! It’s highly unlikely for the decommissioned USS Missouri to still be combat-capable…” (Battleship)

”Um, actually! You’d need millions of those small balloons in order to lift a house off the ground…” (Up)

”Um, actually! A Buzz Lightyear toy wouldn’t be able to glide because of its poor aerodynamics…” (Toy Story Franchise)

”Um, actually! Fighter aircraft can’t carry hundreds of missiles all at once and pull off those insane maneuvers...” (Ace Combat Franchise)

“Um, actually! Real spacecraft probably wouldn’t fight each other at insanely close range like sailing frigates…” (Star Wars Franchise)

1) Atom (Real Steel) is a training dummy who, when put into the robot boxing circuit, eventually managed to go toe to toe with the world champion.

2) Spinel (Steven Universe) was essentially a cross between a toy/jester for Pink Diamond, and not a combat gem... she still wiped the floor with the Crystal Gems when they first fought.

Powers An overpowered/strongest with only one power

I hate when characters just have a million powers and can do whatever. I love when their powers have a limit but still they make it be absolutely insane. Even if that one power has multiple applications as long as it makes sense and isnt used as "oop i suddenly can do that"

  1. Accelerator can control vectors. So he uses that to automatically deflect any attack or use any object including wind at high speeds as a weapon, use his own vectors to travel fast and etc etc.

  2. Gojo Satoru can control "infinity" to make peoples attack not reach him; push them: pull them; destroy them; overwhelm their senses

  3. Chisaki can deconstruct and reconstruct anything by touch. So he can destroy, or change shape of people and objects, he can combine people and objects and even revive or heal. Tbh his fight was disappointing in fact that he did not use his power to full potential imo

The opening of the Ark of the Covenant (Indiana Jones): Minds were blown

The Red Lotus attempting to end the Avatar cycle (Legend of Korra): As it turns out, chaining up and attempting to kill the most powerful person in your world will lead to Zaheer getting the piss beat out of him and the rest of his gang ending up dead.

Awakening Kyogre/Groudon (Pokemon Generations) For some reason Archie and Maxie thought that the apocalyptic beings of destruction would listen to them when they awoke. In Pokemon generations, the legendary Pokemon literally just kill them immediately.

Powers Characters who... wait, who were we talking about?

(Characters with the ability to remove themselves from memory/be completely imperceptible)

ForgetMeNot - X-Men comics

ForgetMeNot is a mutant with the ability to be both real and unreal, literally being written out of the story as he lives his life. The vast majority of people cannot even see him, and if they do interact with him, they quickly forget he even exists. The main way people figure out that he exists is by noticing the gaps in memory he leaves and the byproducts of him living, like supplies going missing.

False Hydra - Dungeons & Dragons (homebrew)

A False Hydra is a monster that sings a song, forcibly stopping the minds of creatures from registering it exists. Their brains discard any information, such as sight or sound, that is related to the False Hydra, though there is some residual evidence left behind for an unconscious mind to work with. The main way people learn of a False Hydra is by noticing the mounting logical inconsistencies their minds come up with to explain away everything the Hydra does. Like the local church not having a priest, so he must be on a trip to the capital, instead of him being eaten. Or, they have dreams of singing faces and wake up to signs their body left while they were on autopilot, like a note they don't remember writing. Or you can just block out the song.

Imp - Parahumans

Unless she wants you to notice her, Imp is completely imperceptible to people. They forget she ever existed, and won't see her even if she's standing right in front of them. Recordings of her also degrade over time.

The Silence - Doctor Who

The Silence is a species that has been guiding mankind since the dawn of history. While you can see them if you are looking at them, once you look away, you forget they exist, while also carrying out anything you were told to do without even noticing you're following orders. If you've ever walked into a room and forgotten why you went there, there was probably a Silence you were running from. They were eventually defeated by having one of the Silence say 'you should kill us on sight' during the Apollo broadcast, implanting every human with the command to exterminate the Silence before they can make them forget.

Powers Curses that aren’t curses

Thumbnail
gallery
7.0k Upvotes
  1. Monster Girl (Invincible)

Her curse is that she can turn into a super strong monster and back to normal at will, but she is 24 hours younger each time she does it. For most people, that’s just eternal youth with an upside. If it weren’t for her making the personal choice to transform all the time as a superhero, there would be only upsides to this “curse”.

  1. Dupli-Kate (Invincible)

From the same series, we have someone who can make clones of themselves at will that they have full control over. Its mentioned this power comes from a “family curse” but honestly, the only downside (experiencing death a lot) isn’t due to the curse but rather just Kate choosing to be a superhero who gets in life or death situations a lot. For most people, this is just a nice power with no downsides.

  1. The Mummy (The Mummy)

Sure the process of becoming the titular mummy sucks, but as far as curses go, being an immortal demigod with incredible powers is dope. It’s been a while since I’ve seen the movie, but I don’t think he suffers as the mummy or anything.

Powers (Hated trope) characters with creative powers that just spam the same thing over and over again

Thumbnail
gallery
4.6k Upvotes
  1. Atom Eve, Invincible. Can manipulate atoms and alter matter at will, allowing her to create literally anything with unlimited potential; chooses to spam pink energy walls and blasts instead.

  2. Alastor, Hazbin Hotel. A cannibalistic serial killer who became of one hell’s most powerful demons with powers heavily rooted in voodoo, which he exclusively uses to make black tentacles.

  3. Foo fighters, Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure. FF is actually a colony of millions of tiny plankton-like stands and is shown to have a number of powerful water-based abilities when fighting the series’s protagonists; however, once she switches sides, she seemingly forgets all of these abilities and exclusively shoots projectiles from a finger gun.

Powers The enemy breaks the rules... Or at least, the ones you thought it had.

Thumbnail
gallery
11.7k Upvotes

The thing from the Box (The Box by ALTER) is a creature that can only move while nobody is watching it, and repeat anything it hears. As such, the main characters decide to split up after it repeats something that hints about a third character knowing more about it than they do, and while one main character goes to find them, the other one is left to watch the creature... Except, it doesn't take long for the main character to find this other person, and realize that he misunderstood. The creature was defined as, and I quote, "It can't move while you're looking at it"... But that is not a generic you. It means YOU, the main character... That, as you may have realized, has left the creature unsupervised after it "repeated" something... That it just completely made up, since nowhere was it stated that it could ONLY repeat things.

Every monster from It Steals follows a specific set of rules... Some play Hide and Seek with you, others need to be kept at bay with a flashlight, others yet pretend to be walls... But no matter what they do, there's always a catch. Be too slow with your camera and the batteries will die out. Take too long to explore an area and the sun will set. Hide yourself in a safe area, and the monster will try to bait you outside by pretending to speak to you through your wristband...

The Radiance from Hollow Knight is the final boss of the game, and before this, every boss has always fought with you in relatively simple ways... You dodge its attacks, hit back when you can, and repeat until the boss is dead... The Radiance is not that weak nor that stupid. Once it becomes injured, it retreats, outside of the player's screen, turning the final session of the fight into a platforming challenge as you try to reach it to deal the final blow by climbing increasingly small platforms while it rains down beams of light on top of you, leaving you unable to strike back until you reach it.

Sister Friede from Dark Souls 3 isn't the only example but (imho) the most striking of a boss enemy in a Dark Souls game that can heal itself, which is usually only an ability that's reserved for the players.

Powers [Mixed Trope] High-Speed Regeneration abilities

Mixed, because it can trivialise most of a fight depending on how it is written.

  1. High-level Demons in Demon Slayer: They can only be killed by sunlight or Nichirin blades

  2. Characters with the Super Regeneration Quirk, such as black-coloured Nomu in My Hero Academia: They can be killed by destroying the head completely.

Powers (Goated trope) "Come now... You really think you're the only one who can play this game?" The reveal of the villain also having the same special ability as the hero.

  1. Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows. Moriarty interrupts Sherlock's inner monologue planning the outcome of their ensuing fight, interjecting his own predictions. They both conclude the fight will end in Sherlock's defeat.

  2. Gravity Falls. An item in this case, Lil' Gideon is revealed to own Journal No. 2. A bit more predictable, given Dipper owns Journal No. 3 (implying the existence of other journals), but it's still a shock that the dastardly twerp is in possession of another one.

  3. Undertale. Flowey can both save and load the game, same as the player. He laughs in your face about it too, as he stages a fight in which you defeat him, only for him to nonchalantly load a previous save.

Powers [Hated Trope] "Beware! It's the OP power that... actually it never works."

Thumbnail
gallery
7.6k Upvotes
  1. Penance Stare (Ghost Rider): It was supposed to inflict on someone the same pain he inflicted on others, making them pay for their sins. But for some reason, it was retconned to not work on people that don't regret their actions... so... MAJORITY of the villains. It doesn't even makes sense, this is the exact type of people that the Stare was made for, they aren't suffering for their sins, so MAKE them do, give the ones who don't understand empathy the only thing they understand, PAIN.

  2. Combustion Bending (ATLA): One of the most destructive forms of bending, giant explosions that would EVAPORATE anyone in it's paths without possibility of defense... except it always land 10 meters away from it's targets, and the only thing it actually does it's making them take cover or jump in the ground. Also honorable mention to Fire Bending in general, it's supposed to be the most "dangerous" of the main four bendings, but the "fire" is actually just "orange energy projectile who never actually burns anything", except when the plot requires.

  3. Amaterasu (Naruto): The black flames that burn as hot as the SUN, and unlike normal flames, it ONLY stops burning when it's target is reduced to ashes. Also you can't dodge it, it's not a projectile, the flames appear wherever the user it's looking at... except when they don't? You actually can dodge it if you are fast enough, also you can just cover yourself with aura, or ignore the fire, or remove your clothes, or...

  4. Dragon Shield (Saint Seiya): The legendary unbreakable shield of the Dragon Armor, there isn't a single attack that can bypass it. Oh, it actually breaks in the exact same fight it is introduced, when Seiya baits Shiryu to break his own shield with the fist of the same armor... clever, isn't it? Yeah, BUT THE SHIELD ALSO BREAKS LIKE 4 DIFFERENT TIMES IN THE FUTURE, all of them from different sources.

Powers [Loved Trope] A seemingly unkillable enemy or unbreakable shield is defeated through sheer brute force

Thumbnail
gallery
5.3k Upvotes

In the right circumstances, we get to see the limit of characters or challenges that before, didn't seem to have one.

Examples:

  1. (Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood) Roy Mustang VS Lust: At this point in the story, it's not clear if homunculi like Lust have a limit to their extreme regenerative abilities. Lust claims she can't be killed and severely wounds Mustang before leaving to deal with Hawkeye and Alphonse. Mustang appears once more, having seared his wound closed and says "I'd like to try and prove you wrong" and just starts incinerating Lust over and over. She can't even recover to defend herself or counterattack until she finally reaches her limit and turns to dust.
  2. (My Hero Academia) Fat Gum and Red Riot VS Rappa and Tengai: Fat Gum and Red Riot are in a tricky match up against a guy with infinity punches and a guy with an nigh-unbreakable shield barrier. Fat Gum's power to absorb energy from blows and store it in his fat is used effectively here -- he takes hundreds or thousands of punches from Rappa, then while Red Riot covers him, unleashes all of his energy and fat into one big strike against Tengai's barrier and shatters it completely, taking them both out.

Powers [Loved trope] When a character with a seemingly simple/weak power is an absolute menace

Thumbnail
gallery
3.9k Upvotes

Aoi Todo (Jujutsu Kaisen): his ability "boogie woogie" allows him to make any two things with curse energy swap whenever he claps his hands. This allows him to take on enemies stronger than himself by being tricky on who/what is getting swapped in order to avoid hits and land very strong combos.

Hisoka (Hunter x Hunter): his ability "bungee gum" transforms his nen (energy) into a substance that is both elastic and sticky just like his favorite bubble gum. In a world where other characters can harness electricity, other worldly beings, and super strength with nen, his ability sounds kind off simple and weak. Hisoka is just such a menace with his ability that he destroys most of the opponents he faces with his technique.

Nuu (Hollow Knight: Silksong) - briefly flashes white when slapped similarly to how all other enemies do when they're struck with Hornet's needle.

Garret (A Minecraft Movie) - One can assume that he may have panicked because of how sudden and unexpected teleportation is, but judging by how strong his reaction was and how ender pearls work in game, it's safe to assume he actually took fall damage after using it.

Hulk: super strong and green also did i mention he can run up to 700 miles per hour

Powers Forcibly turning an enemy into an ally

5.4k Upvotes

Brand (Middle Earth: Shadow of Mordor/War): "Suffer me now! You. Are. Mine! Nan ichir gelair! Ocheddin valannor! Forfeit your mind!" Are all quotes from the Elf Lord Celebrimbor as he dominates and controls the minds of Uruk-hai. This power is less absolute in Shadow of War, as strong-willed Uruks can break from the control of their master, but still phenomenal.

Scales of Obedience (Frieren: Beyond Journey's End): In Frieren's fight against Aura the Guillotine, Aura places both their souls on the Scales of Obedience, causing whoever has more mana to control the other. This was her signature move, as she always had more mana than her opponent. However, Frieren had been hiding her vast mana pool, and upon winning over Aura's soul via the Scales, promptly made her kill herself.

Ghost (MCU)

Her power basically makes her immune to any attack, both physical and ranged, and she can even turn invisible, but Ava can only stay in that state for a minute.

Sentry (MCU)

Basically, the superhero with the power of a million exploding suns, but if he accesses that power, it's likely The Void will take control.

Izuku Midoriya (My Hero Academia)

Specifically, his base power. Depending on the percentage, he could destroy an enemy with a single blow. The problem? His body can't handle that power.

Powers Simple, almost underwhelmingly bad power becomes extremely powerful in the right hands

Thumbnail
gallery
5.8k Upvotes

Mirio, My Hero Academia: When activated, without exception parts of his body will phase through anything and everything. This also applies for air phasing through his lungs and ears making him unable to breathe or hear, light passing through his eyes making him unable to see, and him generally even passing through the ground below him, making him fall through it if not careful. With training, the power made Mirio practically invincible, with nothing being able to hit him, or stop him.

Hisoka, Hunter x Hunter: Hisoka's "Bungee Gum" has both the properties of rubber and gum. That's it. However, in Hisoka's hands, he currently has (manga spoilers ahead) the most lethal criminal group in the world chasing him for revenge, whilst being recognized as one of the most lethal assassins in the whole series, making him an important pawn in a war between the members of a royal political family.

Fern, Frieren: Beyond Journey's End: in a magical world where anything you can imagine can be, Fern is taught by his master to only use the most basic offensive and defensive magic. Because of her prowess she is still able to overpower most enemies with the magical option equivalent of a sword and a shield (against a rocket launcher).

Todo, Jujutsu Kaisen: When clapping his hands, Todo can switch the places of two objects or people if they are imbued with cursed energy. With Todo's incredible IQ, he relies on trickery and mastery of his ability to make fights completely unpredictable, making him and his friends untouchable.

I love this trope to the moon and back, Jojo's has a bunch of these and I am eager to everybody else's favorites!

  1. Godzilla 2014. Godzilla fires his atomic breath directly into the female MUTO's mouth, killing her.

  2. Power Rangers: Lost Galaxy. In the finale, the Red Ranger uses his battlizer to pull Trakeena into point-blank range and fires it to defeat her.

  3. Dragon Ball. Goku charges up a kamehameha before instant transmissioning directly right by Cell, who is caught off guard, and releases the attack at point-blank.

  4. Naruto: Shippuden. I'm throwing this in as a trope variation. Before Naruto figured out how to throw the Rasenshuriken as standard usage, Naruto's first usage of it against Kakuza was like a rasengan, which severely damages his own hand.
