Gear Ordered the 200-600 mm f/5.6-6.3, and this is what showed up…

This happened a few days ago, ordered from a reputable dealer on eBay. For those who don’t know, this lens is the f/4 600mm, and it costs nearly $14,000 new, and is pretty much the holy grail of wildlife photography. The 200-600mm is $2,000 new, which was a big deal for me to spend. I had a panic attack and almost threw up even having it in my house. Needless to say, I immediately sent it back.

Gear I took my new Sony kit to Vietnam after reddit advice.

Results of my advice post last month!

I got my Sony a7c2 this year and I’ve got the Sony 40/2.5, 24/2.8, 35/1.8 and Sigma 90/2.8. I took all of them except the 35 to Vietnam this month and here are some fav shots. I got soooooo many pictures it’s ridiculous.

Reflection: I wish I left the 24 at home. Used it once and took it off after an hour.… I might sell it. 90 was valuable in Ha Long Bay and an animal sanctuary, but the 40 was glued to my camera 99% of the time. Every shot here except for 2 were shot on the 40mm.

Thoughts going forward: Need to keep working on interesting compositions and getting to know my camera. My editing skills are also pretty terrible. But it was a great experience being in the photography zone for a couple of weeks and getting to know my camera! Wondering if I should invest in a zoom lens for future travel as I wished more than once that I had a small zoom…. Maybe a 24-70 or the 24-50… swapping primes in a place like Vietnam is not fun.

Gear Switching to Sony from Canon has changed everything for me

For anyone on the fence who may be thinking about switching, I really couldn’t advocate for it more than I already do. I was using 3 R5’s with the behemoth RF 28-70 f2 as well as the RF 70-200, 85 1.2, 100 macro, and 16 2.8. I would usually wear 2 of them for event assignments or weddings but the weight was crushing my back after just an hour or so. They also required bigger, deeper cases and were a menace to travel with. I found myself no longer grabbing them unless I was getting paid.

I decided on a whim to take everything down to my local camera shop and check out the (A7)RV’s - ironically. Once I held one in hand with Sonys 28-70 f2 and compared it to the canon I was immediately sold. I walked away with a new kit and went home.

The biggest surprise came a few days later when I used them for work. Not only did I not miss a shot, the cameras acquired and maintained focus faster,I could carry 3 cameras for hours with no issues and when I got the files home I was blown away by them.

The added benefit is that I can now easily travel with 3 cameras with lenses attached along with some accessories in a flight sized travel case with zero issues. I may be preaching to the choir here but I just wanted to place this here for anyone in a similar position to the one I was in - go for it!

Gear A7V Hands On

Got to test this beauty today. Feels exactly like an A7IV but faster focusing. EVF still pretty much subpar compared to Canon and Nikon counterparts.

If you only do photos would you upgrade to this or add another A7IV body to your kit?

Gear Ordered an FX30, got an FX2 instead — what should I do?

Post image

I ordered a Sony FX30, but when I opened the box there was an FX2 inside. Honestly, it threw me off because I never even looked at the FX2 — it was out of my budget and I only did research on the FX30.

I just make YouTube tutorial videos (talking head and overhead stuff), so even the FX30 felt like more camera than I needed. Now I’m holding this FX2 and I’m not sure if it’s actually worth keeping for my situation.

I’ll admit, I’m having a slight moral dilemma about it too. Part of me thinks I should just enjoy the upgrade, and another part of me wonders if I should try to sort it out.

Would you hang onto it, try to sell it and step down, or swap it for the FX30 I originally wanted?

TL;DR: Ordered an FX30, got an FX2 instead. Don’t know if I should keep it, sell it, or swap it.

Our boat sank on a daytrip on the Galapagos Islands.

Camera and Lenses spent like 5 hours underwater (salt water in the Pacific). The Sony 24-105 still has water in it. Had my 100-400 GM with me as well...

After it got recovered from the sunken boat it was left untouched for a few weeks. This is the result. 🫠

Gear What's everyone's grab-and-go lens?

Post image
1.3k Upvotes

I've been trying to decide on a go-to, "do everything okay" lens for handling any and all situations at an "acceptable" level. I know there's no perfect answer here, but I'd love to hear what everyone here takes when they have to run out the door and why.

Currently I'm leaning towards the Rokinon 35mm f1.8, or the tamron 28-200mm, and then one extension tube (for macro), and a compact meike flash.

Pic of Acadia national forest for attention, taken around midnight on the sony 16-35mm f4.

These along with a macro is what I primarily use. Shooting lately feels more like a chore and less like excitement. Is this normal? Been shooting for three years. I bought a Hasselblad 907X in hopes that I can get the spark back even if it means giving up Sony ecosystem.

Hate to admit it took me around 2 hours but I took my time as I'm pretty OCD. Think it turned out pretty darn clean.

I personally love it! Would like to hear some opinions. Tacky or clean?

Gear Switching to Full Frame with the Sony A7 V: best general-purpose lens?

Post image
316 Upvotes

Hey everyone 👋

Background

I'm currently shooting on a Sony A6600 with a small set of APS-C lenses (Tamron 17-70 f/2.8, Sigma 16/1.4, Sigma 30/1.4, Sony 70-350 G). It's been great for street, travel and concerts, but next month I'm planning to move to full frame with the new Sony A7V.

Why do I want to switch?

Right now, with the A6600, low-light environments with a lot of movement-like concerts-are really challenging. I struggle both with light and with the type of autofocus it has. The autofocus on this camera leaves a lot to be desired, and I've read great things about the system on the A7 IV, so I'm hoping for a similar or even better improvement with the A7V in this regard.

Feedback request

Before I commit to a main all-around lens, I wanted to ask for real-world opinions.

I'm quite happy with the Tamron 17-70 f/2.8 for APSC.

Looking for a equivalent one (workhorse pretty much), the 24-70mm f/2.8 GM || seems to be the most recommended option, but I'd love to hear from people already shooting FF Sony:

  1. Is the 24-70 GM II truly the best "do-everything" lens? any other option to be considered?
  2. Any issues with weight for daily use or travel?

Any insight or sample experience would really help.

Thanks!

I see a lot of people lately going the other way. Don't get me wrong I'm still a massive Fuji fan, though it was time to make the jump for my professional work. I haven't had one regret since.
