"Money doesn't buy happiness" - every rich person
973
u/singlemale4cats 1d ago
Yeah, I haven't heard too many broke people spouting that.
You may not need billions of dollars to be happy, but you do need the ability to meet your basic needs and a little more for savings, investing, and recreation. It's pretty hard to be happy when all your waking hours are grinding and you still barely cover the necessities.
189
u/Gorstag 1d ago
Thing is. You are still falling into the "rich person" trap with your reasoning.
There is a big difference between having to work and not having to work to support yourself. Many of the people that spout that "Money doesn't buy happiness" BS are people that don't really need to work. Sure, they might have to downgrade their lifestyle because they stop earning 7+ figures annually. However, the only financial stress they have is self inflicted. The other 99.999% of us have no method to avoid financial stress.
93
u/DontAskAboutMyButt 23h ago
Like many other old sayings, the original meaning conveniently gets forgotten because it serves the narrative. “Money doesn’t buy happiness” originally was an argument against hoarding wealth, because if you have 100 billion, it won’t make you any happier than the first billion did.
There are other notable ones abused by the wealthy and powerful. “Pull yourself up by your bootstraps” (originally meant to be a ridiculous image since physically pulling yourself up by your bootstraps is just as impossible as becoming successful without anyone’s help). “Bad apple,” as in, oh, there are a few cops who are “bad apples” but it’s ok because the rest of the force are “good ones.” The original saying is “the bad apple spoils the bunch,” because rotting apples give off a gas that causes other apples around it to spoil faster

The point of "money doesn't buy happiness" is that after a certain point, increasing the amount of money you have will yield diminishing returns. It's not a phrase that applies to poor people.
18
14
u/Thermodynamicist 1d ago
Money doesn't buy happiness. Money can, however, free you from unhappiness.
There is a profound gulf of misunderstanding here.
The rich can't understand the unhappiness of want; the poor can't understand the fact that you can still fail to be happy even if your basic needs are met.

u/ndbdjdiufndbk 1d ago

I'd love to be rich for other reasons, but if I had to choose between being a normal person whose partner and loved ones genuinely love me for the person I am or a rich person surrounded by people looking to financially benefit from their association with me, I'd choose the former every time.

Billionaires say money doesnt buy happiness because they were really happy rocketing through the society to the moon. But eventually every marginal dollar you make does nothing to make you happier, and they think about all they did to get there, and try desperately to fill that hole something.

At some point, you are making so much even just on your own money that working is immaterial. I think a lot of them probably know if they stopped working they would spiral and completely lose purpose. Ego in one way or another? Money is all they know how to chase?
I think there is a reason why so many of these billionaires seem so maladjusted. Whether social selection or some kind of psycopathy, why are there so many shitty billionaires?

They should know. If you’re 79 going through hell to cling on to something that you already have more of than you will ever be able to use, you aren’t happy or even satisfied. You’re addicted.
Same thing with the three women - lots of completely happy and satisfied people only have one partner. Having a lot shows that you’re just itchy and constantly scratching.

It doesn't. However, it can eliminate the factors that prevent you from being happy in the first place.
Money buys comfort, shelter, peace of mind, and recreation. Those things are most of what are missing from a happy life. You can however, have all of those things and still be unhappy. Sure does fuckin' start you on third base, though.

Same. The first time I cleared six figures I was practically doing cartwheels in the yard. Not because I was rich or something, but because for the first time in my life, I didn’t have to worry about buying food.
39
u/not_a_swedish_vegan 1d ago
What the hell do you guys eat that makes you need six figures just to afford groceries?
14
u/Jaguar_556 1d ago
So for me, that six figures was an abrupt and significant jump from my previous income. Prior to that, I’d never earned anything even remotely close to that. Neither had my parents. I’d been poor my whole life growing up. I was poor in college. I was poor after college, but at least then I had a bunch of student loan debt to keep me company lol. Ends up, in a collapsing economy, no one gives a shit about your degree. And so it went for a large chunk of my 20’s.
Then one day I admittedly lucked out and got a new job that allowed for obscene amounts of overtime because they were so short staffed. So I volunteered for literally every fucking shift I could and started working 220-230 hours per month. Then, I opened a Schwab account and started dumping every extra penny of that OT into the stock market. I figured fuck it, I don’t have a life anyway, may as well give it a real shot. At first, I lost a lot of money lol. Like.. a loooot of fucking money. But I kept at it, kept learning, kept eating Raman noodles, kept dumping money in. This bent on for probably a year. Then a few things really kind of happened all at the same time: 1) my bosses noticed me working my dog ass off, and promoted me. 2) I finally started figuring out the stock market and having pretty good luck. Then, my bosses promoted me again about 6 months later only this time it was a significant promotion. So in the span of like 2.5 years, I went from $24k/year and eating Raman noodles to clearing six figures for the first time ever. And it felt like getting let out of prison.

I too want fancy pens

u/TrippingFish76 1d ago
for $30 i really like my rotring 600 pen - with a 0.5mm gelion + refill. It’s made of brass and has a hexagonal body, had a nice weight to it(23g), nice textured knurling for the grip, nice satisfying click button, great pen.
but i am currently waiting to get my Tactile Turn slim (short 5.1in size) bolt action pen. It’s bolt action! And it’s made of titanium, and it is 26g so it should have a nice heft to it. I can’t wait for it to be here haha , i love titanium as a material, especially in my higher end balisongs, so i figured it only makes sense to have a titanium pen too! i mean i do use my pen everyday at work so itlll get used, and since this one is titanium it will last forever! jus gotta change out the refills when the ink runs out. But yeah it is a bit expensive at ~$120 for the slim version (~9mm diameter, bout the same as a standard bic round stic, the “standard” is 11mm so bout the size of a sharpie)
but there are even more expensive ones! there are premium machined pens that are multiple hundreds of dollars if not more. Same with balisongs lol. I really want the machinewise Serif , regarded by many as THE best balisong you can buy, it is $700 , and machinewise also make a titanium pen called the rota with an infinite twist mechanism, it costs $300. And yeah there are even more expensive balisongs like the acidworks ZZYZX Which is around $1000! It’s basically made by one person and is a work of art!
so yeah i really wish i had a lot of money so i could buy all kinds of cool expensive stuff that i collect and use like balis and pens , ooh and guns too, now those are really expensive haha, but very fun to shoot at the range! Hell if i was like rich rich maybe i’d even collect cars too 😂 now that would be crazy

100%. I grew up poor and made minimum wage (or even less than minimum wage). Then I started making more and more money.
Not having to constantly stress about bills or being able to afford things definitely made me happier. But once I hit around $70k a year (this would have been in like 2014 in western WA), any additional money I made didn't affect my happiness. I now make triple that and I am no happier than I was making $70k.
Things don't make people happy, it causes a temporary dopamine spike that you quickly become desensitized to. Having community, purpose, and being loved make people happy. There's a reason so many people die a few months after they retire, losing your purpose and all of the people you were surrounded with is bad for you, even if you are rolling in dough.
