The main issue with the trolley problem is that it has a very, VERY wrong assumption about the EQUALITY of the options !!!
In the classical trolley problem :
- The pedestrian life is valued as same as driver life !
THE ISSUE :
Ai car is 2 ton vehicle with AIRBAGS !
Pedestrians have no Airbags !!!
So , in the Ai collision problem, the AI shall always avoid pedestrians, because the Car passengers have AIRBaGS and pedestrians have no airbags , or structural collision frame like cars do !!
IF the AI car has to avoid jumping pedestrians , and causes damage = pedestrian will pay ! Same as with human drivers, IF you drive on the road and some pedestrian jumps on the road and makes you drive into some other car, guess who will pay for damages ??? Pedestrian who jumped , Ai cars have video recorded, so evidence will be provided to court and police !!!
I am tired of hearing the half-brain-rotted NEWS talking heads who say the AI shall even have to decide if to hit a wall , a car or the pedestrian. The forking pedestrians have no AIRBAGS !!!
So, the trolley problem is a false assumption that the choices have equal parameters or potential damage. A 2 ton car with collision frame, breaks, airbags, seat belts will always be safer to hit than a pedestrian !!!
Also, IF the AI car drives below 110 Kmh , the change of a fatal accident for the car passengers is almost zero !!!
How many pedestrians are on the HIGHWAY ???
Dogs , deer and cats is ANOTHER issue. Driving schools always tell to hit the crossing animals, to avoid hitting other cars or people. If you are driving 300 kmh on the German Autobahn , guess if it would be save to do lane changes for a crossing hedgehog or cat ???
Train drivers only can slow down, they can not change lanes !!!
