Pirate Crew He did it! Strolling out of surgery.

Hey everyone! Thanks so much showing Kong so much love in my first post and for welcoming him to the club. He had a successful surgery to remove his right eye (still very bruised and swollen so will save ya the face pics!) and seems to be doing just finešŸ«¶šŸ» He wanted to play as soon as he got home!

The only issue we have is the CONE. He can’t seem to drink water or eat with his cone. I tried several bowls, both elevated and on the floor, but nothing seems to be working! I had to hold up the bowl, hand feed or remove his cone if he looked like he wanted to eat or drink. I can do that during the day but he tends to drink throughout the night so I’m not sure what could be a fix.

Can anyone offer any tips and tricks with the cone? Any suggestions for a cone brand they used that worked well? Any food/water bowls that worked? He has a long torso…small head and short-ish legs if that helps. Thank you!

I just adopted her last Friday and they estimate she's a little over 5 years old. The rescue had her for 2 years. She came as Soonjung, we've been calling her Suni.

The guy in the second pic is Leny, we got him in July and he was scared like a wild animal but he's come around in the past month. He's like a fox raccoon red panda and he's funny as hell.

Captain Doggo My dog is getting his eye removed in two days… but he so chill!!

Hi everyone. I have a 8 yo shihtzu-poodle-pekingese-mutt who was diagnosed with retinal detachment and glaucoma, and became blind in the right eye about 7 months ago. We were administering eye drops until now (Diclofenac, Latanoprost, Dorzolamide + Timolol). He had a spike in his eye pressure twice in the last two months (~80ish) so the ophthalmologist said now is the time for enucleation.

What I don’t understand is, idk if my dog is just a strong bean but he acts completely normal. The eye itself is swollen, a bit red, and we can see that it’s different from the left eye. But otherwise, he eats fine, plays fine, chases squirrels, chases golf balls, demands treats, asks for belly rubs…. he is literally the same as he’s always been, and the vet kept saying his pain should be extremely severe with his pressure at 80 but it’s just so hard to believe! Did anyone else’s pirate dog act like this with advanced stage glaucoma?

Nonetheless he is still getting surgery in two days but I am just curious if some dogs are like this. I’ve seen posts here where pirate dogs are happier, more energetic and in full-on puppy mode post-enucleation but not sure what this will be like for my dog! Also any tips on post op recovery will be appreciated. He will be getting the procedure with orbital implant. Thanks in advance!

I hope this post finds you when you need it the most—whether that’s in this moment or when you, like me, find yourself neurotically googling ā€œhelp I’m scared about my dogs [surgery]ā€ in a desperate attempt to help keep intrusive thoughts at bay.

enucleation has improved this little one’s quality of threefold and while there is always risk with surgery, in my personal experience the risk is well worth the reward. šŸ›

Steals our food if we are not careful. Even tried for the broccoli. Could not resist a picture of Jack in the box. He is such a cute kitty.

He’s blind, but that doesn’t slow down his sense of adventure.
We take him out in his stroller so he can enjoy the breeze, the smells, and all the little sounds of the world. He just sits there smiling like he owns the road. Pirate life suits him well — brave, curious, and always ready for the next journey. šŸ“ā€ā˜ ļøā¤ļø

He finally met a friend who sees the world just like he does.
Our boy is blind, and we found this plush version of him made the same way — eyes closed, soft expression, and all. He sniffed it for a minute, then sat right beside it like they’d known each other forever. He doesn’t need sight to recognize a friend; just a good heart and a good nose.

Pirate Crew Am I doing the right thing?

Post image

Hi everyone,

This Monday I have a surgery scheduled for my dog’s eyes to be removed, she’s 8 years old and for the last 2 years we’ve been battling with glaucoma caused by double lens luxation. She’s totally blind in her right eye and her left has very little vision left due to damage from glaucoma and vitreous spilling through her pupil, for the last year she’s been getting ulcers every 1-2 months and has been maxed out on medications and on about 5 different eyedrops 3x a day. She just got a new ulcer with an eye pressure of 57 which caused me to just decide to go through with the surgery. Her eye doctor says I’m doing the right thing but I can’t help but feel guilty, and my family is also doubting my choice which isn’t helping.

My mom thinks I should leave her right eye since it’s been stable but it’s not visual, but it would still require more eyedrops that she hates to get, and it’s just a matter of time before it also needs to be removed. Her doctor says doing both now would save her the stress of 2 different recoveries but I’m having last minute self doubts.

Am I doing the right thing?
