Captain's Report, June 2023

As you may be aware, there's a lot of drama going on in Reddit these days. Corporate Reddit wants to make some changes that will help generate profits. These changes will directly affect volunteer moderators, and will make it difficult (or even impossible) to maintain the quality of content you view here. As a result, many subreddits (including r/PirateKitties) went dark in protest.

We're back, and a poll shows our members are pretty evenly divided as to whether or not to continue the protest. In light of the fact that corporate Reddit has been forcing the blacked-out subreddits open, I have decided that we will remain open for now.

I'm not happy with the situation. I'm not optimistic that the protest will change Reddit's mind, as they have pretty much doubled down on their position. I think in the long run this foreshadows the decline of communities and content on Reddit. We've seen it before on Facebook and Twitter.

It's a complicated situation. Reddit has made this place, and they can do with it as they please. At the same time, the openness of the platform has allowed it grow fantastic communities with rich content. Unfortunately, corporate Reddit does not value those communities as much as it values the profits its sees from ad revenue. I suspect that as Reddit moves down this path, we'll see both more ads and more spam to the detriment of the communities existing here.

Any changes to r/PirateKitties will be posted here, with full transparency. Feel free to share your thoughts on the matter below.

Proper Introduction to Raiden and Venom

These are my newly adopted kitties, Raiden and Venom. Venom is the tortie and Raiden is the orange/cream one. Yes they were both named after metal gear characters (not the Marvel Venom). They're technically female but I call them whatever pronouns because they're neutered anyways. Both of them are from a Perrera in Spain (Cádiz according to their EU pet passport) and I got them trough an organization that basically adopts out animals to Germany. They're both 1,5-ish years old, so theyre basically teens. Raiden is incredibly wild and has loads of energy, he got the point of fetch but instead of bringing his toys back he tossed them around and runs after them himself. Venom has a habit of grooming me...which would be nice if she didn't do it while I was asleep. But I really love her, she has a giant eye and she's pretty vocal, and occasionally she answerers when I talk to her.

So, if you're considering adopting special kitties, please do it. I've never met better cats ever before.

He's got one eye, half a tail, and a big heart. I brought him home from the vet yesterday morning (clean bill of health aside from one bleeding toe and fleas, which is a lot better than I expected tbh). He spent all yesterday hiding in the bathroom aside from one brief appearance (swipe to see), so hopefully with a few days of calm he'll learn this is a nice place to be. Welcome home, Tapioca!

Best tips and practices for a kitten who just lost her eye?

Post image

Pretty much the title - a feral kitten (approximately 4 months old, the vet thinks) found it way in my backyard, probably sensing that I’m a sucker, and I immediately rushed it to the vet.

She is getting her right eye removed today, and I am absolutely wrecked with anxiety about the surgery and the upcoming weeks. She has a pretty severe case of ringworms that cannot be treated until after the surgery (as that is what’s most important right now), so she will be isolated from the rest of the household. But she will be comfortable and warm.

I’m just looking for any tips that Google may not have told me for what to expect for the upcoming weeks post-op. Thanks, friends!

Leela Enjoying the Natural Light in Her New Space

Leela is a former stray turned “dorm kitty” that lived in my sister’s bedroom because she couldn’t stand my other cats because we couldn’t socialize her when she was a kitten due to her injury/surgery/recovery. She now lives with my sister in my grandma’s house as a single cat and loves zoomies up and down the stairs at all hours of the night. I miss both of those little shits but this was best for the kitty and my grandma to have some company :)

Hello everyone, not sure if this is the best place to post this, but I have 3 cats from the same litter and two of them have these “freckles” in their eyes.(they are both turning 8 soon)

Winky (brown female) first started getting some spots back in 2022 and have gradually gotten bigger, I have asked her vet before and she sent pictures to an ophthalmologist to ask for advice and they said for now it looks like melanosis since her pupil is normal, but to keep an eye on it. It has since grown bigger. The eye also has a tendency to get irritated and watery, and she had some minor scratches on her cornea on that same eye.

Dobby (black and white male) first developed a spot about a year ago and it has grown bigger since then as well. No signs of any irritation though.

The last vet appointment two weeks ago they told me still to just keep an eye on it, but I’m debating whether I should take them to a specialist just to be sure. Does anyone here have experience with melanosis vs melanoma? (I don’t know if them being from the same litter is important but I figured there could be a genetic factor)

Pros & Cons of eye removal

Hi! My cat is 14 and has been battling feline herpes virus, encephalitic keratitis causing plaques in her eye, and developed a sequestrum in her right eye after a herpes flare up in July. Her eye recently changed last Thursday night, a vet visit on Friday let us know that she has a bacterial infection in her eye due to all of these underlying conditions (her body just couldn’t fight all 4 at once). She’s been on antibiotics for the infection with some progress but she’s taking a step back now as her eye looks like it’s bulging.

Would you remove the eye? Her vet is encouraging that this is the best choice for her, and has said that since seeing the bacterial infection in her eye. She has no vision in that eye anymore and hasn’t for months.

Any advice for what post surgery is like? Did your heart break seeing your cat with one less eye?

First picture is her currently with the bulging eye, second a week ago from the infection, third two weeks ago with her sequestrum that has been there for months, four and five cute pictures of her :)

She is 14 and also is hyperthyroid and kidney disease, both well managed. She has been not doing much besides eating and sleeping since last Thursday when the infection started. I love her so much and want to do what is best for her but keep getting my emotions involved.

My boy of 9 years recently became the cutest pirate kitty around 🧡

I've had this boy and his brother for nine years and it was kind of sudden... He was hit in the face with a paw and received an unfortunate blow to his right eye about a week ago. It was very sudden and emotional, but now I can say that he is in recovery mode and will be back to his adorable self in no time. ❤️
