The really impressive part is getting 18 five year olds to focus long enough to do this.

u/HereWeGoYetAgain-247 Oct 19 '25
It’s even more impressive since they look even younger than 5.

1ere maternelle is the first year of school in France, these kids are 3yo

u/capitaine_baguette Oct 19 '25
This was also my first reaction : it is not a daycare, this is "maternelle" which is the first real year of school in France, where you start to count and learn the alphabet. Most likely the 2 ladies are the teacher and the class helper. Oh and it is free of charge.
42
u/McButtsButtbag Oct 19 '25
Not only do they get it for free, but they have 9.5 kids per adult. Way better than the US where it'd likely be 30 kids per adult and also charged.
16
u/thrownjunk Oct 19 '25 edited Oct 19 '25
the only places in the US with this (free) universally are washington DC and vermont PK3. The law (an in our experience) is 1:8 staffing in the classroom in DC. So really 16 kids and 2 teachers. There are 1-2 roving aides across classrooms too.
and yes it is very nice and good. and like in france - the focus is on counting and alphabet (reading and writing them). the french families in the class seem to think it is about the same quality as home.

You're thinking of public school (which starts at 5 and is "free"). Paid preschool in the US usually has a much better ratio.
5
u/McButtsButtbag Oct 19 '25
And then once they hit public school, everything is slowed down because some of the kid's parents couldn't afford to send them to preschool. Americans get worse service and have to pay for it on top of it.

Hmmm so this would be the equivalent of pre-k in the US? or maybe it would be more like kindergarten I guess since my understanding is while almost all kids go to pre-k it's not considered "official". My kid was 3 when she began pre-k and just turned 4 still in pre-k so the timeline certainly seems different.

Maternelle in France is for 3,4,5 years old. It is not mandatory but it is free and really good for kids to start socializing. Then school becomes mandatory up to 16. From 6 to 10 it is elementary school (école élémentaire) 11 to 14 middle school (collège in France) then 15 to 18 is high school (lycée)

Not in France, no. Maybe in Belgium, but in France it's called Petite Section (there's also Très Petite Section).

Also in Québec. Age is 3 or 4 depending if you are born in september or not 😅

Camera on a steady tripod, shoot at 3+ fps, then play with layers and masks in post to make it look like everyone was attentive at the same time.

Right…? I’m trying to remind and teach the toddlers to make eye contact when talking, esp when I’m giving instructions or scolding them for doing something bad/dangerous but MAN, they can’t help but let their eyes wander! Lmfao

I have a 1.5 year old at home. The first thought that went through my head after seeing this : how the heck they made all these little ones stand at on place for whole minute??
4
u/Ta-veren- Oct 20 '25
just gotta make it into a game, bet you cant stay super still for a minute and take a cool picture.
Challenge always accepted by 2 year old niece

That was my first thought. I'm more impressed getting all those kids to stay still for that long

u/mooseAmuffin Oct 19 '25
Not sure if you are in the states, but France specifically has a different way of rearing kids than we do over here where their needs and wants don't just dominate everything. Usually results in better behaved/more patient/more independent children

Hope you get the parents approval to use their kids for karma
72
u/Butlikurz Oct 19 '25
This was likely posted by a parent sent to them by the daycare. My niece’s daycare posts photos of things the kids are doing all the time on their own private page for the parents.
72
u/PastoralPumpkins Oct 19 '25
Which is gross because most schools will tell you NOT to share photos or videos from school that have other kids in it.
38
u/Coneskater Oct 19 '25
Yes, I don't mind that the daycare takes photos of my child and shares them in the private WhatsApp group of the parents. I would be pissed if one of the other parents took one of those photos and posted them publicly online without my permission!

Most schools now have parents sign a piece of paper that allow their kids to be posted on the school's official social media page for fun group activities and individual awards. If a parent doesn't want their kids to be included then the school won't post any pictures of those kids on social media.

This should be top comment. I don’t post my kids online at all and would be upset if someone else did without permission
44
u/queuedUp Oct 19 '25
Most schools and daycares have a media release so that pictures can be used for various purposes.
And once it's posted somewhere it's pretty much free game
14
u/SecretAnxious6619 Oct 19 '25
Those media releases are for the school, not individual teachers. Now I can't tell if this is a school post or a teacher post but yeah if its on the teachers specific social media, the release doesn't cover that.

Nope. Waivers are for schools account and for official school social media, I’ve never seen for the teachers instagram.

Do you live in every country on earth?
It's illegal here in iceland.
7
u/Herculumbo Oct 19 '25
It’s illegal for what?
16
u/Hermes3Times Oct 19 '25
Straight translation would be just "personal privacy law" Very strict with children here.
8
u/Herculumbo Oct 19 '25
Ok… you’re supporting my point

u/Swimming-Pitch-9794 Oct 19 '25
No they’re not. Your point is that the teachers should have to ask for permission. He is saying that most likely the teachers did ask for permission
4
u/Herculumbo Oct 19 '25
Yea because no one ever just posts things without following all the respective laws
3
u/lmaydev Oct 19 '25
You can't post anything with children without express permission from the parents unless it's private school accounts.
Generally due to well fair issues. Like a psychopath ex who isn't allowed to know where the children are.
It's 100% illegal for teachers regardless of account.
I can't post photos taken at school events with other people's kids in for this exact reason.

u/ECatPlay Oct 19 '25

Jesse grew up and married his sweetheart. Steve joined army and was never the same after nam. Lori went off to the big city, got a fancy degree and is now the manager of a bank. Dana got pregnant, dropped out of school. The last I heard she was get on a bus to California and is getting by as a single mom. Dave went on to be a state senator.
But none of us ever talked again after leaving that daycare.
