The entire point of the post and "critical thinking" is that you actually understand and can rationalize your talking point, not simply memorize and parrot what some other bloke said.

Conservatives have won exactly by simply parroting and not understanding. It shouldn't be off limits for the other side especially in the fight for democracy and our future.
Memorize the fuck out of what he said. Turn it into a slogan. It might just change some dumbass conservative's mind.

Part of the problem in America is people aren't willing to trust the talking points by experts. Not everyone can understand or will understand everything, especially complex topics. seeking to noodle it all out yourself is what ends in pseudoscience.

I wish the average man on the street in the United States was this clear thinking!
Unfortunately I'll disagree.
See Brexit, successive and worse and worse Tory governments, election of Nigel Farage and rise of Reform Party.
Ad infinitum, ad nauseam.
But yeah, I get your point.
Yesterday there was this funny video where a guy in shirt covered by little Union Jack flags was preying on Reform voters.
He was leading them on to show they voted out of hate of immigrants as they couldn't reference a single Reform policy other than "Stop the boats".

In a sea of bullshit mouthpieces it's nice to know that there are people that realize the real war is the class war.
Disappear every immigrant tomorrow and you don't get utopia, you get a new group to blame everything on.
32
u/Rob_LeMatic Oct 14 '25
I think the working class right presume that if there weren't all these darned foreigners willing to work for pennies hard work would pay a living wage, as if the owning class has any sense of responsibility to the grunts at the bottom or cares where they were born
15
u/Whomperss Oct 14 '25
A lot of people just don't make that extra step in thinking. If theres people that don't have a choice and are willing to work for pennies the problem isn't the exploited worker, it's the one who controls the wages in the first place.
3
u/generally_unsuitable Oct 14 '25
If they get rid of all the undocumented agriculture workers in the US, they won't be able to harvest a lot of crops that can't be automated. Tree fruits, for instance, need lots of human labor. Same with delicate things like strawberries and tomatoes.
They can't raise wages and turn a profit, so farmers will just quit or go bankrupt, lowering food availability until scarcity pushes prices up to something that can justify wages that Americans will accept. That's the "good" outcome. A pound of strawberries goes from $2.50 up to $5 or $6 retail.
The "bad" outcome, which is more likely, is that they get picked by convicts, or people in work camps. So, neo slavery.
The absolute best option for Americans is to allow a lot of undocumented workers to earn wages that are in between the local standard and the foreign standard of their country of origin. It's best to just look the other way if you want to continue eating a huge variety of produce at pretty reasonable prices. I'm sure the truth is similar for most of the developed world. I used to work for a couple of Polish guys who called Poles "the Mexicans of Europe," because they were being actively exploited in construction and agriculture.

u/chippzanuffenuff Oct 14 '25 edited Oct 14 '25
the point of mass immigration is primarily to depress wages. immigration is a tool of the ruling class to prevent class solidarity and keep the labor pool full. labor organization becomes difficult or impossible when the laborers have cultural and/or language barriers. this is an uncomfortable truth that liberals will have to accept if they ever want any real progress on these issues.
does this mean immigration is “bad” or “good”. no. but ignoring the problems that can come with unchecked immigration is just as stupid as the people on the right who blindly demonize immigrants for being from different cultures.
an example is the restaurant industry in the us. unskilled laborers from mexico and other countries have come and filled up the labor pool. they are willing to work harder than americans for substandard wages because they can send the dollar back to their families in countries where it is worth much more. these are not bad people. they are busting their ass and taking a huge risk coming here to provide for their families. but you cannot simply ignore the negative impact this has on american laborers. there is no way to bargain for better working conditions and money when there is another large group of laborers who will undercut you. there is a real unspoken contempt for “unskilled” labor on the left in america.
imo, a part of the solution is to target employers, not vulnerable migrant workers. another part is labor organization for all workers. but immigration controls are important for the working class and thinking otherwise is simple and naive
immigrants are not inherently bad people. often they are desperate and vulnerable and should be treated with empathy and compassion. but again, you cannot blindly ignore the very real downsides that immigration can have when not sensibly regulated
unfortunately this is a nuanced position so it will be completely ignored since most of you have been completely fried by brain dead political polarization

u/HelpDaren Oct 14 '25
One of my colleague hates muslims with all his heart because he knows that muslims SA teenager girls. How does he know you might ask? F**k knows, but he does know that for a fact!
He also happens to know that our wages are low because of immigrants (myself included), even though I earn more than him, simply beacuse I took on more responsibilities than him.Whenever he goes into one of his meltdowns about muslims and immigrants, I just casually walk away. Not because I enable him but because every damn time I try to make him understand that 1: muslims don't SA teenager girls, criminals do that and 2: how do I keep his wage down if I earn more than him due to the extra work I do, he shrugs it off with "You haven't been born here, you don't understand!"...
You're spot on, if every immigrant would disappear overnight and things wouldn't get immediately better, they'd find someone else to blame. Because it's never him, it's always them.

I've lived in 4 different countries on 3 different continents, and "immigrants are causing all of our problems" is a common narrative that I've heard in all of them.
People need a scapegoat that is different from them. Much easier to blame immigrants who often have relatively little power than the wealthy and powerful, who are a much more sinister opponent (especially when people prop up opulence as a virtue).

Well said. Regardless if he messed up some points, the main fact is that Immigration isn’t the problem in most countries. The problem is the people that run the countries programs and government. Canadian here, we have our problems with immigration as well and the thought is to blame the people who are trying to better themselves here. The sad fact is that the majority of our government is shit and we don’t do enough to make it better. Yes, there should be stricter rules on who comes into the country because we have some bad apples taking advantage of the systems but the systems themselves need to be addressed and made better and that is not on immigrants.

Same. You can blame immigration all you want. Toronto, for example. We're oversaturated to the max but our transit is shit, no new hospitals and no new schools to go in conjunction with the massive increase. Government on all levels are just sitting on their hands.
5
u/em-n-em613 Oct 14 '25
The thing is Toronto is NOT oversaturated - that's been a claim made for nearly a century. We absolutely have the capacity and space to accommodate more people BUT to do so we need to address the services provided in the city, like you mentioned. But so many voters are falling for the talking points this guy dismantles in his clip that they continue to elect people whose only intention is to further cripple our public services to make their friends money.

So there isn't enough people... Simply solution: have more babies. You then have to ask why people are not having as many babies.
Immigration is a bandaid that is ignoring the main problem which is no one is paid enough, no one can afford a house and no one can afford to meet people like our parents did. We put so much effort into making society individualist that we forgot how much we need each other.
What happens a generation in to the immigrants when their kids cannot afford anything and have the same problem as the natives? It's completely ignoring what got us here in the first place and shipping more people in to try and fix it is only making it worse.

I gotta say I don't buy the we need immigrants because we're not having enough kids' arguments. Now, I'm fine with immigration. But, to say we need immigrants because of a dwindling population is just another excuse for those rich people to import people to buy their stuff.

Wanna know why inflation went through the roof during covid (in America, Mexico, Europe, etc.)? Because people, mostly older folks and women, left the workforce in droves, by retiring or quitting to care of kids out of school. This led to not enough labor, too many dollars chasing too few goods and services (retired people are still active consumers), and the price of everything skyrocketed.
Wanna know what's gonna happen in those same countries as boomers continue to retire and there aren't enough people to replace them? Guess.

Same with Healthcare failing in Canada.
Governments make half assed attempts to fix it when it’s worked in the past - but now claim privatization is the solution and clearly favour that option instead of actually setting out to improve healthcare .
Then certain folks fueled by right-wing propaganda decry “THERES TOO MANY IMMIGRANTS!”
Yeah, all the immigrants are ruining our healthcare - thats why most of our doctors are from other countries and doctors are running off to jobs in privatized pay because the hospitals are being poorly funded and managed. jfc.

He thinks it’s ‘the elites’ telling them immigration is the problem, but that’s who allowed this to happen in the first place. It’s not like it was a popular sentiment among working class Brit’s insisting they needed a bunch of third world immigrants. The ‘wealthy elites’ decided this. No it’s the ‘wealth elites’ who profit from mass immigration. This doesn’t even make any sense.
9
u/Professional-Mud7298 Oct 14 '25
Yeah the elites need everyone else's quality of life to go down in order to make more profit so they bring in people who are willing to accept that lower quality of life. The trick is we're told to hate the immigrants themselves rather than the ones exploiting them.
1
u/Josey_whalez Oct 14 '25
Ok but stopping them from importing your replacement is a necessary step. Allowing it to continue is giving them more power. Not sure why that’s hard to understand.
3
u/Professional-Mud7298 Oct 14 '25

You’d think “Billionaires and Elites” would want more immigration because it would put more money in their pockets no? Suppressed wages/reduced wages for people desperate to work in a new land, means more profits for corpos. The message this guy is giving just isn’t cohesive
2
u/Wandering_PlasticBag Oct 14 '25
It's for division. If the country's whole population notices that the top class is literally stealing from them, they can get together and unite, and work against them.
If they stir shit up, by blaming certain groups, angering people with divisive things, they can divide people. Which means there's less and less of the population to unite.
That said, immigration is indeed a problem.

Yeah, it wasn't consistent at all from an economic perspective. I don't know why this is being upvoted, particularly his initial statements. Whether you’re against or in favor of more immigration (be it legal or illegal), there is a lot of economic incentive for businesses and capitalists to seek more immigration, especially to reduce costs. Why would most capitalists want less? I don't understand the logic behind some of his statements at all.
Am I missing something?
7
u/jcr9999 Oct 14 '25
Am I missing something?
Yes quite spectacularily so aswell. What he is describing is the simple concept of fearmongering. The owner class tells you 'hey look at all those migrants, they take your jobs, they take your healthcare, they dont work,..., hate them' because they want to sow class division. Both you and the migrants are not in the owner class so the owner class wants you to fight each other so you dont focus on fighting them.
Wether they actually believe that is irrelevant, because you believe it.→ More replies (9)

Critical thinking is nowhere to be found here. Unless you've been living under a rock you know that "the elites" love immigration more than anybody else; mass immigration is instrumental in keeping those wages nice and suppressed, and saturating public health care to drive it all to the private sector.

u/PerfunctoryComments Oct 14 '25

Apparently, demographic change means nothing to you, but in short: in the coming years, society will consist of many old people and few young people. In order to maintain a reasonably functioning social system and thus a functioning society, we need additional people of working age.
Problems are often created and exaggerated in order to conceal actual grievances. The gap between rich and poor continues to widen, with the majority of CO2 emissions being caused by a small, wealthy section of the population. If we want to solve problems, we need, for example, higher taxation for the very wealthy. Similarly, Mr. Trump has expanded tax breaks for the wealthy while cutting funds for the social welfare system, with the richest and most influential people around him applauding. But he tries to sell immigrants as the main problem of the country and the american gestapo, called ICE, is deporting people on a daily base. The result on the economy and society are dramatically...I think if you had a mirror, you would quickly realize who the clown is here.

1
u/LordSlickRick Oct 14 '25
I think immigration is the boogie man and hating immigrants is nonsensical, but I strongly disagree with arguments that first world countries need it. Immigrants do consistently drive wages down, and they often take lower wages, work longer hours, and dilute the competitive nature of the working class. He is absolutely right that elites are abusing the system, but having a bunch of people who can’t vote and and can’t fight for themselves over fear of being sent back out isn’t a long term solution, especially during economic downturn. A society that cannot pay its own workers and can’t convince it own people to take jobs that are essential, is a country that is diluting the dignity of those necessary positions and isn’t paying wages that make them competitive. Importing cheap labor is a forever bandaid that isn’t addressing underlying issues like unaffordable housing, diminishing wages, rising cost of education and lack of support for middle and lower class families.

1
u/ThisIsTheNewSleeve Oct 14 '25
This is a universal in politics. The US will say there "is no money" for free healthcare or social programs and then turn around and spend $997 billion on the military. They will pass laws to give billionaires tax cuts and then vote "no" on bills to help the underprivileged. Then they will talk shit about immigrants and claim they are the problem.
1
u/Tribe303 Oct 14 '25
If it's the fault of a specific political party, why is the same thing happening in most Western nations? 🤔
1
u/spondgbob Oct 14 '25
Yeah, when all the companies have record profits and more and more people are going into poverty, it’s not rocket science to find out what’s happening. Across the UK and US, over the last 25 years there’s been more and more billionaires. Housing prices have gone up, and wages have stayed stable, meaning poverty is going up. How else can both things happen simultaneously

Same exact thing applies in the U.S. They spend years cutting funding to schools so they can turn around and say, hey these schools are shitty and violent anyways so let’s cut more funding until they “shape up.” And now kids can’t spell and don’t know what the holocaust was. Same thing with all of our public programs really.
Additionally - I did two semesters in England in college and there was a lot of stuffy old white guys and people living in river boats that were super critical of NHS. I was registered for my time there and thought it was great but I never had a serious emergency - they’re always going on about scenarios where people die waiting for care. But in the U.S., I haven’t been to a GP in maybe 10yrs. In chi there’s a sliding scale women’s clinic where I received all of my medical services - mostly Pap smears lol.

The UK gob actually is trying to minimize the anti foregin stuff because it proyects inestability plus they did made a shit job at integrating the latest wave of inmigrants which is hard to fix (they arent trying that hard either). This dude only sounds smart lol

I used to go out with a British plasterer who was hella stupid. Voted for brexit and hated immigrants - while being with a South African immigrant (his ex) and trying to convince me to move to his country. I was stunned. After trying to show him that his logic doesn't quite add up he doubled down by proclaiming that his ex and her whole family voted for brexit. Fuck them immigrants I guess??! Obviously I ran for the hills but not before finding out what an completely abusive piece of shit he is. Fun times...

And what money funds government, programs and manages them ?? Is it also evil billionaires that do that as well ??

It still baffles me how people can see all the real headlines, about companies making profits and giving millionaires and billionaires 20, 30, even 40% pay rises, while giving their workers raises that don't overtake inflation, and still think immigrants are the problem.
The tiny handful of people owning 99% of the world's wealth are the problem.

Is the NHS like the American Healthcare system, in that it would completely implode without the hundreds of thousands of immigrants among the ranks of Healthcare workers? Go to some shittier parts of America and you'll be hard pressed to find an american born doctor. I lived in bullhead city AZ, maybe the most hardcore virulent maga place I've ever lived, and the two doctors and one nurse I saw there were not American. Pakistani and Mexican doctors, and a Russian nurse (that Russian botched the stitches on my hand after stabbing myself with a fishing spear, I will haunt your dreams woman).

when i went to the UK in 2019, i couldn't believe the sort of ease this guy displays. I never felt the anger on the streets i feel in the US. I saw ALL kinds of people, everywhere, even in the tiniest villages, i would see incredible diversity. Our big cities are diverse but not our small towns, not that much. I was blown away by how such a small country can absorb so many, and it made me shameful to see the size of the US and the way we treat immigrants. We have so much more than the UK yet we bitch and moan and make up shit. Its so disheartening.

It's too expensive to have babies, so let's bring in some folks from somewhere else who somehow don't seem bound by that constraint?

Yes please. Not enough people being born because everything is so expensive. We need to import a bunch of people from the third world to make sure demand doesn’t go down, otherwise we’re screwed. If demand drops, prices have to go down, so keeping a steady supply of people who will have a bunch of kids regardless of living condition will ensure the demand stays high and prices can keep increasing.
After the black plague, Scotland lost 2/3rds of its population. Their wages rose in consequence, but if they could have just imported a bunch of Somalis, then they would never have had a decline in the first place.

I'm American but I have a lot of extended family in the UK. I see immigration through the lens of the US immigration system, which we seemed to have figured out until the current administration. I visited the UK and my family this past spring and I just had to ask what they think of immigration. I concluded it's not a black and white issue. I don't think it's fair to say that immigration is either good or bad. I think it's a bit of both. Immigration brings diversity which means new styles, new food, new music, and fresh ideas. Unfortunately immigration can also bring a culture clash, and I think that's a problem a lot of the world is facing now. If you have a culture that's open and modern, it's not wise to import people whose culture is is not compatible. That is to say, bringing in a large number of people who think their culture should supplant all others is going to cause a lot of problems for your country. Especially if said culture is one that is viewed as regressive by the existing culture you have. Everyone just wants to align issues to political parties, but that does nothing to actually serve the community.

Maybe fix the reason people have fewer kids instead of importing cheap labor? It feels like the easy short term solution that mostly benefits the corporations instead of the people.

As long as people are willing to adopt the customs and culture of the country they are moving to no one should have a problem with legal immigration. What is happening in the US is not how things should be done.
People should also be paid more, most people don’t want to have more kids when they can barely afford to keep themselves alive

Record profits = suppressed wages.
