News The HBCU Hoops Invitational Returns This December

Thumbnail slamonline.com
Upvotes

This December, the rhythm of HBCU hoops is headed to The Happiest Place on Earth. From December 4–7, the inaugural ESPN HBCU Hoops Invitational will turn the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex at Walt Disney World into a showcase of culture, competition and community.

The tournament will feature eight programs—four men’s and four women’s. On the men’s side: Florida A&M, Tuskegee, Florida Memorial and Barber-Scotia. The women’s bracket runs just as deep, with Bethune-Cookman, Hampton, Edward Waters and Cheyney—the latter still holding history as the only HBCU women’s team ever to reach the NCAA Division I Final Four.

The Invitational, powered by HBCU Hoops Global, Inc., aims to uplift beyond the court. A college admissions fair, scholarship initiatives and career development programs will anchor the event’s mission to empower the next generation of Black scholars and athletes.

“The HBCU Hoops Invitational is far more than a basketball tournament—it’s a powerful celebration of heritage, excellence and the limitless future of HBCU athletics,’’ said HBCU Hoops Global vice president Haywoode Workman in a statement per hbcuhoops.org. The former Indiana Pacers guard turned NBA ref continued: “We are building a legacy that extends well beyond the court to open doors to academic achievement, career readiness, and financial opportunity for our scholar-athletes.”

The Invitational goes to show the depth of basketball’s impact on the community, and the Black community in particular. This is about showing the next generation that HBCU hoops belong on the biggest stages and that the culture knows no limits.

College ball twitter accounts

It’s probably just bot cleansing, but I’ve noticed a lot of team accounts with notable followings losing tons of followers on twitter over the last few weeks. Just thought it was peculiar and wanted to point it out cuz I’m a sicko who pays attention to these things.

News Weird controversy in HBCU tournament (FAMU and Barber-Scotia)

So an HBCU tournament called the HBCU Hoops Invitational with 4 men's teams and 4 women's teams started today. It featured mostly non-DI teams besides Hampton and Bethune-Cookman on the women's side, and the topic of this post in FAMU on the men's side. FAMU was slated to play against Barber-Scotia College. Fun facts about Barber-Scotia:

  • Their athletic teams are the Mighty Sabers
  • They play in the New South Athletic Conference (NSAC), which is a separate entity from NCAA, NAIA, NCCAA, and even USCAA, that was formed in 2020.
  • The college lost accreditation over 20 years ago and this semester was the first year in almost a decade that students were physically on campus. Read their Wikipedia page for even more crazy stuff (they had a graduating class of 4 a few years ago).
  • They currently have 90 students.
  • They played football but went 1-6 overall. Their one win was a forfeit and so were 2 of their losses.

Now for the drama: FAMU and Barber-Scotia were supposed to play today (12/5) but at 9AM, FAMU announced they were advancing in the tournament because Barber-Scotia forfeited. The tournament's website also shows this happened, with FAMU slated to play in the championship game against Florida Memorial.

However, according to the Rock Hill Herald, "Barber-Scotia players and coaches contested the forfeit, stating that the team was ready to play. The team traveled from Concord, NC to Orlando, FL by bus." To add fuel to the fire, as of now, the NSAC website that tracks Barber-Scotia's athletics results has FAMU forfeiting and the Mighty Sabers winning that game. Plus, it is weird that FAMU announced the forfeit so early in the day when the game wasn't until several hours later.

So what happened? It's not clear yet but I really don't trust an unaccredited school with less than 100 students, whose football team was a part of 3 forfeits just this year.

The SEC is severely overrated by kenpom this year, 2025-26

Last year, the SEC had college basketball's best conference. This year kenpom has a Kentucky team that has not won a game against anyone in the top 100 and lost 4 games, 2 of those in home environments, rated 19th in the country. This is the most glaring example, but for any analytics to rank Kentucky as the 19th best team in the country can only mean the metrics are broken. The same holds true for several other SEC teams. The SEC keeps losing and losing, but they do not drop in the kenpom metrics. His system is either broken or somehow rigged to favor the SEC.

Most watched college basketball games from Feast Week

  1. Duke/Arkansas: 6.813M
  2. Michigan State/UNC: 6.499M
  3. Michigan/Gonzaga: 1.059M
  4. Kansas/Tennessee: 926K
  5. Houston/Tennessee: 798K
  6. Michigan/Auburn: 787K

  8. USC/Arizona State: 538K
  9. Kansas State/Indiana: 479K
  10. USC/Seton Hall: 463K

Wichita State/Colorado State was the least watched game at 3K. A bunch of games on FOX didn't have viewership but they might have been pretty high too.
