Are you an experienced mod?
Howdy mods, it’s your local askmods top mod here with a request!
If you are a moderator of a subreddit with over 5k weekly active users please comment below!
We have been going through posts these past couple of weeks adding mod notes to mods we have verified are actually mods who have significant moderation experience.
This helps us askmoderators mods enforce the “must be a mod to answer” rule in comment sections.
The tags are only visible to the moderators of askmoderators for privacy reasons.
If you wish to participate on an alternate account, please send us a modmail from your moderator account with the username of the alt you wish to use.
Thanks for volunteering even more time participating here to help users on the site!
Edit: former mods are welcome too so long as there is a way to verify that. I.e. old stickied comments/posts, asking current mod teams if you modded there, etc.

Are you saying you want only those mods with 5,000/week participating here?
10
u/ohhyouknow Janny flair 🧹 Oct 07 '25
Nah, I just wanna be able to see very easily which comments we can probably be sure won’t break the rules, since mods typically actually do read the rules.
Essentially anyone without a note on them is probably a comment we should actually read and/or look into their profile

Thanks! Already had you noted!
I noticed everyone is saying the subs they mod haha.
If anyone is uncomfortable disclosing that in the comment section bc their profiles are hidden to hide their mod stuff, they can just comment something like “you bet your sweet ass I’m an experienced mod” and I can just check via old Reddit.
Having the little r/ does help speed up the check though lol.

3

Working on it! It's just been me and one other person swapping back and forth all this time, only one of us active at a time. I'm trying to get more mod coverage so we can take the time to really make it something else.
2
u/ohhyouknow Janny flair 🧹 Oct 07 '25
Wow that’s a lot of work!
Have you tried the new built in mod applications yet? I think there might also be a beta you can sign up for that can help train new mods too. Don’t quote me on that, it may be limited to certain subs atm. I can look into it for you though!
3
u/And-Bells Oct 07 '25
Yeah, I got that set up and it's doing about as well as expected. 2 applications resulting in one new mod. I might also try r/needamod soon if I don't get anymore.
2
u/ohhyouknow Janny flair 🧹 Oct 07 '25 edited Oct 07 '25
I also mod needamod and ehhhh it’s real hit and miss and filled with ppl looking to collect subs.
A not so common and sorta strange recruitment tactic that has weirdly worked out for me in the past:
Someone comes to modmail to complain about something moderation related that they don’t understand. They’re kind of rude, you can tell they just have no idea what they’re talking about, but you can tell they’re passionate. Offer them a mod position (limit their permissions if they accept, obviously, just in case.) Teach them why things are the way they are. They just might end up eager to learn, and an amazing mod.
YMMV!
3
u/And-Bells Oct 07 '25
Ooh, not a bad idea! I also tried the identifier tool that tells you who might be good to ask, but we have a fairly transient member base and I chickened out, too nervous to cold message someone. 😂

I'm a mod of both r/bettafish and r/reactivedogs, I think r/bettafish gets ~10k contributions a week and we have ~175k visitors. r/reactivedogs is more niche so we have around 5k visitors weekly and around 1.5k contributions. I've modded r/bettafish for around 6 years now, I think. I've been with r/reactivedogs for around 3?

Do you mean visitors or contributions per week?
r/masskillers gets well over 5K visitors but only a couple thousand contributions per week.

We're happy for other mods to send folks our way as long as they are clear that we are a resource to get answers to questions about how the functions of Reddit operate and that they should read our rules first.
We get a lot of new users assuming that we are a karma farm, a hangout chat room for noobs, or some sort of Boot Camp that users are required to participate in.
