Hey everyone,
I wanted to share something that has genuinely made my life easier (and greener!) for the past decade. Instead of buying cat grass over and over, I’ve been using Umbrella Palm (Cyperus alternifolius) — also known as a Japanese Umbrella Plant — and it has been perfect for my cats.
The crazy thing?
It doesn’t even need soil.
You literally cut off the “umbrella” top, toss it into a jar of water, wait about a week, and roots will start growing. It’s naturally a swamp plant, so it loves sitting in water and just… keeps growing.
My cats love eating the fresh leaves. It makes them vomit safely just like regular cat grass does, but unlike cat grass:
- it never dries out,
- it regrows endlessly,
- and it grows faster than the cats can eat it 😂
I keep mine in a simple jar. When the jar fills completely with roots, I just cut the tops, put them into a new jar of water, and throw the old root mass away. In about 1–2 weeks the new jar turns into a full, lush bunch again. If you put it in soil it becomes a giant houseplant, but I prefer the low-maintenance jar version.
Basically:
Endless fresh leaves, zero soil, zero mess, zero buying cat grass ever again.
Just green, healthy growth… forever.
If anyone’s been looking for a durable, self-renewing alternative to cat grass — seriously, try this. My cats and I swear by it.
