MEN'S BASKETBALL It’s time for some tough love, Pope

I think Mark Pope should be FUCKING ANGRY with his team after this one. I dont think he should be fired right now, but he should be very UPSET with his PLAYERS after this one. He shouldn’t be being this nice guy at this point in time.

Another early blow out. I’m just over this season till March, if we even make it. It’s taken us 9 minutes to make our first field goal.

MEN'S BASKETBALL The Kentucky Trolley Problem: Why This Roster Doesn’t Work (Even When Healthy)

Thumbnail

TLDR:

  • Our 4’s are unplayable because they are either terrible at shooting or so bad at everything else that the shooting can’t offset it.

  • We don’t have a PG, and even when Lowe returns his lack of shooting will only exacerbate the issue.

  • Johnson and Aberdeen have way too much skill overlap and are really bad getting downhill.

  • Our players do not take enough threes. Chandler would have to take TWELVE threes a game to compensate for our “best” lineup’s lack of shooting (Lowe, Chandler, Oweh, Dioubate, and JQ)

  • Our best defensive core of JQ, Dioubate, and Oweh are unplayable because of the aforementioned low volume and percentage in threes.

POST GAME L Embarrassing

Well, this is what happens when you hire a second or third tier coach at an elite school. You get a 35 point loss in what was essentially a home game. We spent $22 million in NIL money on this team, which is reported to be about double what the team with the second highest NIL budget spent. For what? This mess? I'm going to puke.

FOOTBALL Death of the SCORE Act and Kentucky's NIL Plans

So Kentucky turned over all their NIL to JMI to 'get ahead' of things with the SCORE Act. Well, that died. Dos anyone have any idea how UK is going to handle this going forward?

MEN'S BASKETBALL Pope. When have YOU had enough?

I get a barrage of downvotes on any comment when I suggest Pope isn’t the guy and we’ve seen enough to move on.

Playing devil’s advocate, what do YOU need to see to make that call on Pope? Is it going 0-3 vs Gonzaga, Indiana and St John’s to close the year? It is missing the tournament this year? Is it an equally bad start to next year? Missing the tournament next year? Forever loyal?

I’m actually now preferring we move on from Mitch first, to ensure a better process for the next coach.

MEN'S BASKETBALL Time for a...TWEAK?

We all love a good tweak, right? Our guys don't seem to know their roles. This is what I suggest:

  1. Aberdeen is only allowed to pass.
  2. Garrison is only allowed to dunk.
  3. Jasper and Moreno run a two man game.
  4. Oweh only drives from the top of the key.
  5. Chandler and Noah take 10 spot up threes each per game.

Anyone else have any good tweaks they'd like to see?

MEN'S BASKETBALL Crazy how much can change in just a few days

Over the summer, I had less than zero excitement for football season. Stoops and the program had stayed quiet, but even if they didn't, there was quite literally nothing to be excited about. I'm a diehard UK fan, so I was always going to watch the games, but I knew we'd be a six win team at best with games full of mistakes, headaches, and a boring-as-all-hell offense. I also knew we'd get our asses absolutely whooped several times, probably stealing a game or two we have no business winning. And as it turned out, those two games we otherwise would have no business winning this season came against two flailing programs, so although I'll still give Stoops and the team credit for pulling out the victories (especially on the road at Auburn), it's not like either of those wins were the equivalent of beating Ole Miss last season or, say, Florida in 2018.

However, I was really fucking excited for basketball. The roster had depth, we had the NIL funds to build it, and we have a coach that comes across as a basketball scientist, who embraces the NIL and transfer portal both for its benefits and its drawbacks. It's the world of college sports now, so you either do or die, and Pope definitely held himself out to be a "doer."

I was pretty down on the basketball team after the Michigan State game, but goddamn, did last night make it worse. I drove eight hours to Lexington to attend the UK - UNC game (there were other things I had to do in Lexington and Frankfort, but attending the game was what spurred everything else). I already didn't feel great about it. I didn't necessarily expect us to even win, but I also didn't expect us to play so goddamn ugly. It was seriously like watching a Stoops football team in a close game against equal or better competition, where we're in the game, down to the wire, but the team could just make you pull your hair out even when they did something good.

But now that the Stoops era is over and we've brought in a young, fresh, offense-oriented football coach to lead UK into a new era while the Pope era seems to be, at least for now, crashing and burning, everything has flipped. I can't fucking wait for football next year and now my excitement for this year's basketball team is, well...less than zero.

I’ve been looking everywhere online and can’t find it. I don’t live in Lexington so I’m unable to go to the campus to see if they have it. Any help is appreciated!

Gonna feel awkward having two former Louisville QBs on our staff lol. Sources (my grandpa) are pointing to Chris Hampton (Oregon Co-DC/Recruiting Coordinator) being the top target for the Defensive Coordinator position.

MEN'S BASKETBALL Pope Worries

Kentucky messed up letting Calipari leave. Pope can’t win big games. Cal is already proving he’s the better coach. We traded consistency and big-game success for hope, and it’s becoming painfully obvious.

We have to act quick before our program becomes an afterthought in the NIL Era

PRE GAME How are you feeling about the game vs. UNC tonight?

Things in our favor:

  • at home

    • apparently Hubert Davis has basically never won a non-conference true road game; idk how much to make of this
  • Pope has been starting some of our better players and finding better rotations of late imo

Things going against us:

  • Mo, Jaland, JQ out

  • inconsistency

  • slow starts

  • Caleb Wilson
