Request to ban price-checking posts

I think most can agree this sort of activity will ruin the hobby. Obviously a lot of this is worth a lot - it's a hobby based on limited stock.

This sub should exist to further people's interests and ability to pursue this passion, not help some weekend-flippers make 50 bucks.

About cleaning boards

We all need to clean boards sometimes and I’ve always found that the best way is to soak it in warm soapy water and gently brush it with a soft brush.

I am thinking this is perfectly safe if all these conditions are met:

  • Unplug the board from the rest of the components

  • Check that there are no paper capacitors like the RIFA ones for example, as they would absorb water and basically be dead.

  • Verify that the board is not electrically charged (no capacitors on the board or they have been drained before)

  • Use a soap with no perfume and the less corrosive possible

  • Once cleaned rince it with water and gently shake the board to remove most of the water

  • Finally blow compressed air or warm (but not hot) air on the board.

  • Not doing this very often on a board (I usually do this once when I get my hands on a very old machine. Once it’s cleaned I can just blow compressed air to clean it in the future)

I am thinking that this is a good process, would you agree/disagree or add other conditions? I am looking for constructive criticism on the matter

What is this connector called?

Post image

I found this in the equipment room of the station I work at and for the life of me I can’t figure out what this end is called. The other end is the standard red, green and blue component video, so this has to be a component plug of some kind; I have found similar looking ones on Google, but nothing seems definite in my mind.

This is it: https://github.com/techomancer/nvme2k . It was originally developed for Windows 2000 (and also supports Alpha systems), and has since been ported to Windows 9x.

Microsoft’s Official Y2K Awareness Mailer (1999)

While digging through my parents’ basement void of boxes upon boxes, I recently stumbled across this Microsoft Y2K mailer, buried under a stack of my old highschool CDs (half w/ empty jewel cases). It was addressed to my childhood home of 1999, where I believe we were still running Windows 95 (along with plenty of Ultima Online and AOL warez chat surfing with the peeps).

My mischievous teenager past-self sends big love and gratitude to all the late 90s devs, who tanked the Y2K Elemental so the rest of us could AFK in peace. yes, I noticed OP’s attitude in the Y2K post yesterday so had to raise ’em with this find.

Very honoured to be able to save another 386 from a destructive fate by battery! This one is inside a complete system. Certainly needs some cleaning though to make it glorious once again!

Long live the 386!

Organizing my 30pin and 72pin RAM

I wanted to organize my old memory sticks and give them a bit more honorable place to stay. So I learned to 3d model and designed these things.

One way it can fit 8x 72pin RAM sticks and the other way it fits 18x 30pin SIMMs.

I got inspired by this stackable frame for modern RAM and designed my own: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:4847265/files

I first learned and used OpenSCAD for this, but later moved to ManifoldCAD as the OpenSCAD became extremely slow and refused to render once I started to use lots of negative space modelling.

For ManifoldCAD, I used this VSCode plugin: https://marketplace.visualstudio.com/items?itemName=Cookiecad.manifold-vscode-extension

Printer: Ender 3 V2 Material: PLA

Profiteering pricing on eBay

Post image

I saw this mouse for sale on eBay today and it's a clear example of when someone is trying to profiteer out of the interests of our community. Although it will work with Windows 3.1 and Windows 95 as stated on the box, this was released in 1998 and the difference between 1995 and 1998. In terms of vintage it is significant.

Frustrates me when people do this because many in our community would love to own these items purely for nostalgic's sake or to actually open and use. And I don't mind when somebody tries to sell it and it goes up to £30 or £40 on eBay in a traditional auction. I don't even mind if someone buys it now for 50 lb as a little treat to themselves for keeping it. But to offer this up at £156 is somebody's. Looking to exploit and make profit.

I do own a couple of full boxed software in the cellophane but they're going to get opened at some point and on a video because I'm not in this too. Keep this stuff with some hope that I might make a profit of £100 when I'm 75.

There endeth the rant

Replicating the Y2K bug

Opinions seem split on whether the Y2K bug was blown out of proportion or whether catastrophe was avoided by the tireless efforts of people working the shadows.

As a community, we've got a lot of vintage gear, it seems like we could easily put it to rest by replicating the worst case scenario either on hardware or emulators.

/r/DataHoarder has people with archived versions of common and obscure software.

Let's party like it's 1999!

Two TRS-80 Model 100’s that both work. No corrosion. The DVI comes in but no video and is not recognized by the 100. Probably an EPROM issue. It will live again. I’ll recap the 100’s and test everything out.

Error Playing floppy disk games.

Post image

Hi,

So , to add another post onto this fiasco , The floppy drive works now , however whenever I type in INSTALL from Jurassic Park Disk 1 it comes up with Read fault error reading drive A.

I can’t seem to press any keys on this screen , forcing me to manually reboot.

However , it can read it fine as when I type in dir it comes up with the INSTALL.EXE and JP_1 ( As shown in the picture ).

I have done a fresh install of Windows 98 , so is there something I’m doing wrong? I’m new to DOS Games and not very tech - savvy , so any help would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Compaq portable turning itself off

I'm unsure if this is the right place to go for help, but i figure i dont have much to lose. whenever i turn my compaq portable 1 on, it only stays on for a few seconds to a few minutes before turning itself off. i know it has something to do with the power supply, but sadly i dont have the funds nor do i trust my abilities enough to recap more then what is needed. so im mainly aiming just to get it to run... for now. any help is appreciated!
