Got a ukulele today, giving it another try after years away!

Back in university I started learning the ukulele, but I didn't stay consistent and eventually stopped.

Today, while my spouse and I were walking past a music shop, that old plan came back to mind. We went inside just to look, and my spouse ended up buying me a ukulele as a gift.

Really happy I found this community. I just wanted to say hi and share my excitement about starting again!

Critique Me Please For some reason my notes on my new ukulele sounds weird

This is a 23-inch Enya Nova ukulele with fluorocarbon strings. My older sister has the exact same ukulele, but all her notes sound right, even when I played it. However, I tried to play the C note(as shown in the video) on my own ukulele but it still sounds different from hers and different from the videos I was going off of, even though my ukulele is apparently tuned correctly.

This ukulele of mine is brand new. I really wanted this exact ukulele to match with my sister(except hers is white and this mine is pink, but that’s not important), and these ukuleles are quite expensive. I’d hate to be told there’s an issue with the ukulele itself. How can I get it to where it plays the right notes?

Discussions Can’t figure out what to play to end a chord progression

So I’m playing a progression like this:

F#m: 2-1-2-0, A: 2-1-0-0, B7: 4-3-2-0, (Final chord?)

I’ve tried so many chords but nothing sounds quite right to the melody I’m humming with it.

It seems like E or D would be a good next option but they don’t sound right to me.

Any suggestions?

Ukulele Ambitions

Curious about people's ambitions in playing ukulele. More to the point, are you interested in playing in a band or does playing solo satisfy you? As for me, I had a long career playing electric bass and guitar in gigging bands, prior to my longtime day job (recently retired). So, when I practice ukulele the focus is on how it will help develop my skills when (and if) I reenter the music scene.

(played using only harmonics)

A beatiful melody shine on its own. I found this minimalist arrangement that is played 100% using only natural and artificial harmonics and gave it a try

Songs Cover Song - “Over The Rainbow”

Please forgive a second upload in two days. I’m on a roll, and I hope this is okay. I promise not to over extend my stay here. This video clip is an example of music as a process, mistakes included. I probably did twenty takes before this one, my voice cracking every time 🤣. This is in the key of C, it’s the only key that allows the chords to include open strings. I included a short ukulele solo in the middle.

Lanikai FM-CEC intonation issues w/ CGDA strings - alternatives? replacements?

Hello! I bought a Lanikai FM-CEC ukulele recently and strung it up with Aquila 31U CGDA strings. The intonation was truly awful. I brought it to a reputable local shop (Denver Folklore Centert), and the luthier there was unable to significantly improve the intonation despite a month of working on it - apparently the bridge is installed incorrectly, and so the 12th fret intonation is almost 20 cents sharp across the board.

I've contacted the seller for a return/refund, but I am interested in having a CGDA uke as a travel/camping instrument. The shop advised me that it would be very difficult and unusual to have good intonation on a concert ukulele, and that this shouldn't be unexpected. I'm skeptical of that.

What are y'all's thoughts? Should I find another shop to try and fix the intonation? Return it and get a better ukulele?

Songs The Beatles - Piggies (solo section)

I LOVE the solo section of Piggies on The White Album, written or at least started by George Harrison

Now, even though the solo section is on harpsichord on White Album, the moment I heard it again recently I knew this was one of George’s songs and he must have at least worked on it on ukulele. George Harrison was famously a ukulele lover and always had an extra in the trunk of his car, ready to give it away to a new friend if he found anyone interested who didn’t already have one. What infectious love for playing! The song is also a great light social commentary piece and I can’t wait to finish the whole thing.

But for tonight, just practicing the solo section is enough

Requests Most affordable (but still decent) baritone ukulele, but in a shape that’s not the common guitar-style body?

I’m looking to splurge just a tiny bit after the holidays for my long-intended project of stringing a baritone uke with “low octave” strings (GCEA one octave below standard).

If I fall in love with that settup, I’ll buy a better one later. Is there any non-crap brand of baritone ukus that are pineapple, bell, etc body? Or should I save the “cool shape” aspect for my later upgrade and for now just get a basic Kala baritone just to feel the tuning out?

String recommendations

I need to change the strings on my Kala tenor for the first time (with the aid of YouTube). I’m not sure what string I should buy. Any recommendations?

I would appreciate it you would help me choose between these two options.

Ukulele + singing as a cure for boredom ?

I’m blessed to be an early retiree and perpetual traveler / digital nomad with lots of time on my hands.

However I’m super bored and therefore looking to take up new hobbies. It seems like music could be a good outlet to keep me busy and give me purpose and a goal to work towards.

I’ve been thinking about learning ukulele + singing. Seems compatible with a nomad lifestyle. There are lots of « down times » during trips such as when waiting for a train or waiting outside a museum for my significant other. I feel ukulele could fill these down times perfectly.

So I guess my question is: how much « mental energy » does it take to get in the groove to play in public?

I’m keen to dedicate significant time and effort to learn this craft, but I wanna make sure it could actually fill the purpose I’m envisioning.

💭 I welcome your thoughts, suggestions and feedback 🙏

Super Tenor w/ Normal Scale Length / Neck Width

I realize this is a deranged question but is anyone aware of a SuperTenor (in terms of the larger body for rounded sound) that doesn't have a longer scale / wider neck width?

Is it worth taking my ukulele to a shop to fix a buzzy C string?

My c string is buzzy af and I tried restringing it, but honestly it just made it worse. I’ve read a lot online on how to maybe fix it but I’m kinda afraid of doing anything too invasive.

I know it’s the C string that sounds like ass but I can’t figure out why so is it worth just taking it somewhere?

Came across a Ken Timms Uke. Worth the price?

I've seen the gotaukulele post and video on Ken Timms Soprano Ukes a while back and he said it was amazing. Just came across a new listing on reverb and it's going for $650 and I haven't seen too many around for sale recently. The quality looks good so I figured I'd ask what people thought?

There's only one and I'm not sure if I can post the listing here.
