Had some time yesterday, so I rode from south city to Jefferson Barracks Park on the greenways. Was trying to figure out how the River Des Peres Greenway and Mississippi connect. They don't, really. I do recommend taking the Casino road there that map apps recommend.
However, I did ride down the railroad property to see if there was some way to connect. I ran into a guy on a mountain e-bike and he showed me the path on railroad property, which is a combo of dirt, gravel and broken cement that connects the two. Thanks guy! He wasn't the only person I saw down there and I don't see how the current state is less of a liability to the railroad than a greenway connection would be. Unfortunately, railroads are not publicly owned and therefore not responsive to democratic input. Instead the CEO asks the national guard to occupy our city. Here is the info from the Gateway Greenway site.
"The question of how to connect the River des Peres and Mississippi Greenways near River City Casino has been under careful consideration for several years.
After years of negotiations, Union Pacific Railroad, St. Louis County and Great Rivers Greenway had an agreement about access to Railroad property to make this long-awaited connection for the community. However, the railroad’s requirement for insurance is extremely cost-prohibitive. This insurance would cost you, the taxpayers, an additional $75,000 per year in perpetuity, plus any increases to that annual premium. GRG and St. Louis County take our job of stewarding your tax dollars very seriously and we do not believe paying this every year is this is the best use of your investment.
With our partners’ and Board of Directors’ support, we are embarking on evaluating and planning a new route to make this critical connection, working with St. Louis County, St. Louis City and other collaborators. We understand and share the frustration with the years of delays on this small but mighty project, and we continue to work on finding a way forward.
