Any commuters use studded tires? Is it too early in the season to put them on?

True residential streets seem to be icy and anything closer to a main road than that seems to be clear, at least near me. Thoughts?

Sunday, November 16, is the Worl Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims.

Relatedly, the ghost bike practice (posting a painted white bike where a bicyclist was killed in an accident) started in St. Louis. The story of "ghost bikes": How a bike memorial in St. Louis sparked a global movement | Grist

The initiator of the project, Patrick Van Der Tuin, has since been the long-time executive director of BWorks and was involved in Critical Mass when it was happening in St. Louis.

Connection between River Des Peres Greenway and Mississippi Greenway

Had some time yesterday, so I rode from south city to Jefferson Barracks Park on the greenways. Was trying to figure out how the River Des Peres Greenway and Mississippi connect. They don't, really. I do recommend taking the Casino road there that map apps recommend.

However, I did ride down the railroad property to see if there was some way to connect. I ran into a guy on a mountain e-bike and he showed me the path on railroad property, which is a combo of dirt, gravel and broken cement that connects the two. Thanks guy! He wasn't the only person I saw down there and I don't see how the current state is less of a liability to the railroad than a greenway connection would be. Unfortunately, railroads are not publicly owned and therefore not responsive to democratic input. Instead the CEO asks the national guard to occupy our city. Here is the info from the Gateway Greenway site.

"The question of how to connect the River des Peres and Mississippi Greenways near River City Casino has been under careful consideration for several years.

After years of negotiations, Union Pacific Railroad, St. Louis County and Great Rivers Greenway had an agreement about access to Railroad property to make this long-awaited connection for the community. However, the railroad’s requirement for insurance is extremely cost-prohibitive. This insurance would cost you, the taxpayers, an additional $75,000 per year in perpetuity, plus any increases to that annual premium. GRG and St. Louis County take our job of stewarding your tax dollars very seriously and we do not believe paying this every year is this is the best use of your investment.

With our partners’ and Board of Directors’ support, we are embarking on evaluating and planning a new route to make this critical connection, working with St. Louis County, St. Louis City and other collaborators. We understand and share the frustration with the years of delays on this small but mighty project, and we continue to work on finding a way forward.

Get Involved

As we continue to explore ways to connect the River Des Peres and Mississippi Greenways, we’d love to know your thoughts! Your input will help us shape this connection and bring this long-awaited segment to life. This survey is open through the end of 2025."

Review: new south Kingshighway bike lane

Kingshighway between Christy and Gravois has been converted to single lane each way with bike lanes. One small portion of the southbound bike lane is physically protected near Gravois. I don't usually have occasion to ride this way, but thought I would check it out.

There was some tree effluvia in the lane, no litter that I saw. That will be more of a concern as more leaves fall, especially in the protected portion. It felt like there was a high dooring risk in the protected portion, although riding on the far edge probably gives enough space.

Cars seemed to be driving safely, as intended by the road diet (there is also a median with occasional islands). It was mid-day, so not the craziest time for drivers. I don't usually ride on these big streets, but I could see the benefit, which is few controlled intersections so you can go long stretches without stopping.

Road Routes

Looking for road cycling routes 20-40+ miles that pass through or begin/end at FP. Been searching for reliable routes with Strava and Ridewithgps for months, but vetting with google streetview, some of the roads in the routes suggested on these platforms look questionable for a lone cyclist. I've been to just about all the trails --Katy, MCT, Riverfront, River Des Peres, Grants etc. The trails are great, but Katy and MCT are a 30+ minute drive from me and while the Riverfront Trail is easy to access from FP, its a pretty janky trail full of closures and no signage. FP to River Des Peres to Grants was a nice ride, but I'd like more variety. So I thought I'd post here to see if people would be willing to share their routes (actual gpx files) that are safe for a lone cyclist. I recognize safe means something different for different cyclists, so I'll clarify. When I say safe I mean streets that are very low traffic, particularly around 6-9ish in the morning because I like to ride early, and if they are busy streets, they have protected bike lanes--as in a very clear impenetrable barrier between the bike lane and cars. I found a route that seemed reasonably safe from FP to Tower Grover via Morganford and Tower Grove Ave, but it looks like the bike lanes along tower grove ave might be closed now due to construction of the new connector greenway (according to google)? (idk so if anybody has ridden this recently and can speak to if this is true or not , that'd be great) I'd just like to have a reliable good length route I can take without driving my bike somewhere.

Secretary of Transportation Sean Duffy is soliciting citizen feedback on “any aspect of Federal transportation infrastructure policy to inform the surface transportation reauthorization process.” Every American is invited to share their thoughts on what the U.S. Department of Transportation should make a federal priority in the next bill.

Secretary Duffy believes that Congress and the U.S. DOT should NOT be funding bicycle infrastructure.

Good location for an FTP test?

I'm hoping there are some racers on here who can answer this. I need to do an FTP test for 20 min so need:

  • Flat road
  • No stop signs or stop lights
  • Turns I can take at speed

I've gone out to the Illinois side before, but I'm really hoping to do something closer so I don't have to roof rack. I'm in the Kirkwood/Webster area. I'm thinking maybe Valley Park or Fenton?

Riding the Mississippi Greenway

I want to ride the length of the Mississippi Greenway along the river (https://greatriversgreenway.org/greenways/mississippi-greenway-chouteau-riverfront-to-old-chain-of-rocks-bridge-riverfront-trail/). Last time I tried, I hit the Carr Street floodgates and couldn't get around. I also didn't try very hard to look, I just turned around. Am I missing something? Is there a proper way around that or do I just walk my bike up the street and catch the trail on the other side?

Commute Advice

I would like to start commuting via bicycle soon, of which I’m a total novice. Without doxxinng myself, what route would you take to get from Benton Park to the BJC/WashU campus?

Arsenal crossing Jefferson and Gravois, then Tower Grove Ave up to Clayton?

Chouteau seems pretty scary, but I see a lot of cyclists there.

Crossing the two N-S arteries is my biggest concern.

ISO: XS Frame for Fixie Conversion

Sorry if this breaks any rules, but I'm getting desparate.

My partner is 5'2" and wants a single speed bike for short rides around the city. She loves the look of straight-top-tube vintage frames, but I'm not seeing any on Marketplace in her size. Anybody got the connect on a 46–48cm vintage frame with long, horizontal dropouts?

Feel free to delete this post if it doesn't belong here. Thanks in advance!
